Why on earth would you be "out of line" asking a question about a hat on an internet forum? No, of course you're not.

Yes, lot of people thought it looked too big when they saw it at first. There was much panic and gnashing of teeth until it was decided that it looked too big in some pictures and fine in others. Some people mentioned that it was a bulletproof motorcycle helmet which necessitated it having lots of padding, and so missed the point judge dredd's not real.

Some more photos came out which showed urban looking like a little kid in his dad's helmet, and in others he looked fine. With no definite 'too big or just right' outcome, fandom was only saved from going mental by the movie coming out and it looking great in some bits and too big in others. To my mind it looked too big when he was on the bike and when he enters the block, but okay by the end of the film.

Which suggests i got used to it.

In those early stills I thought it looked a bit too big but in motion I thought it looked great, or I may have just been so pleased to see Judge Dredd on film that I just didn't notice.  ;)

Maybe slightly bigger spaulders/pauldrons (delete as appropriate) might have offset the helmet a bit.
I think Mr. Garland said somewhere - possibly in the Q&A on this forum - that looked perfect from some angles and not so good from others.

Anyway, I preferred it to the one Stallone wore. I couldn't look past the absent 'X' nose guard.

I love the way we all look upon it as a 'nose guard'- even though it's just painted on a piece of (i guess) bulletproof plexiglass. Originally it was to form the 'nose bridge' of the judges skull helmet- i wonder how many new readers still see that now, after all these years of that 'skull face' being buried further and further in the design?

I also wonder how many of us have drawn a nose guard on the stallone helmet and thought "if only..."? I know i have.

I never thought of it as being painted on, just assumed it was part of the helm proper that extended into the visor.

Was the helmet originally designed to look like a skull? I think starting in the mid to late eighties must have set my vision of Judge Dredd's look to a certain style. I used to think the way artists drew the helmet early on made it look a bit silly but now you've mentioned the 'skull face' it makes a lot more sense. Intimidation tactics, striking fear into the perps kind of thing.

From the horse's mouth:

As Carlos recalls, he had combined, "a basic motor-bike helmet with a fifteenth century executioner's hood... I added elements from an ancient Greek Warrior's helmet to give Dredd's helmet that distinctly rounded full-face look."  (The making of Judge Dredd, 1995.)

I loved the film but................. its too big, the helmet. I didnt like the lawmaster either. I didnt mind the change of uniform but those two things bugged me and still do. I wish I didnt feel that way.

Didn't have an issue with the helmet at all. Sure, it may appear to be too big at certain angles, but that's more of a play of light than anything else, plus the fact that no one can ever have a chin the size of Dredd's in the comics in real life. As for that lawmaster, I can't understand how anyone doesn't like that thing. When I first seen the set pictures of it, I wasn't too sure and thought that maybe it was just some sort of mock design for the real one and wan't too keen on it. But as it turned out, it was the real one, and seeing Dredd on the back of it on screen made me realise just how good it looks. There's no way the original design could be applied to a film with Dredd's tone. It'd look ridiculous. It also makes sense considering the design is that of a 500cc super bike. Nothing is outrunning that thing.

i liked both movies and both sets of props  in the Stallone movie I quite liked they were faithfull to the comic the big bulky Lawmaster and the huge chain connecting the badge  in the new one which I am not supposed to have seen as it is not released in Oz as yet......(you gotta love the internet)  I liked they it was portrayed as a Dark n Gritty future only thing I sorta thought was missing was perhaps a justice dept sheild either on the front or sides of the bike......otherwise when is the sequal going into production I cant wait!
anyway i think Karl kicked arse as Judge Dredd!!!!!!!.........................

It really is quite simple!

In '95 cinema excreted a film by Danny (useless twat) Cannon, which nigh on destroyed Dredd for the sane world. Nice city-scape and excellent Angel Gang do not a film make. Hammerstein didn't move from the spot and shouldn't have been used in the film.

Roll on 2012 and we are saved, except the helmet's too big debate. It's not too big, as it's all to do with angles, shadows, etc... The helmet I wear looks big in certain angles.

If anything, the Stallone one is too small ;)

I can't see why anyone thinks the helmet is too big. Never looked too big to me.

CF is right, anyone disagreeing with him is wrong.

I liked the helmet, but I am still curious as to why they chose not to have it cover his nose. Lex's did and as such I think made him look the best. (Lex was the leader right?)

Was the helmet too big or urbans' chin too small? A couple of the other judges had chins more in proportion to the helmet. As different artists give us different views of Dredds' world so the two films give us different approaches. I like them both but for me if you could blend the two films I would like it better. Again personally, the best Dredd film ever made was Bladerunner, atmospheric, futuristic yet gritty and real. I've been with it since Prog 1 and still look forward every week to it dropping on the mat... How old!!!

I have to agree with your points mate, if you look at Blade Runner, its like the world of Judge Dredd and MC-1 without Dredd! Its an absolutely breath-taking film and my favourite film of all time. The opening Hades Landscape shot coupled with Vangelis' soothing synth score makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up - everytime! Its a joy to watch and I never get tired of seeing it. I know the Stallone Judge Dredd gets slated a lot, but if there is one thing I liked about it - it was the production design of MC-1. Look at the night shot of Rico amongst the bustling citizens, with the neon lights and the costumes - its not hard to see the influence of Blade Runner there! A shame the rest of the film was so poor.

Not to pour fuel on the fire, but the fact is Dredd's helmet has always been too big and awkward. The film version is relatively modest compared to some of the Vader-esque (without the crease) splaying domes portrayals in some of the progs...

I suppose the problem is that Urban isn't a small guy, yet even the films relatively modest helmet dwarfs him. But he does do the grimace perfectly, uses his chin as best he can and delivers Dredd as Dredd. And that, really, is all the matters.

Agree with Bladerunner tho...

You know, I have watched the movie at least 10x by now, and I never considered the helmet size until this post.  LAst night at about 2AM after all sorts of Saturday night inebriation, I fired up the blu-ray and noticed the helmet as huge for the first time.

THANKS A LOT.  >:(
