Title: COMIC ARCHIVE 'ONE EYED JACK AND THE DEATH OF VALIANT'
Post by: maryanddavid on 09 November, 2012, 10:36:04 PM
Im back again pimping another fine publication from Hibernia!

What is it I hear you ask?
Comic Archive is intended to be a semi regular look at the more obscure and forgotten comics and creators.
Our first book is; 'One Eyed Jack and the Death of Valiant'

I think it will be right up most board members alley,
It is 32 pages plus covers,
Order you print copy now or download it right now (we have moved with the times) at our shop on the wonderful Comicsy site, you can buy all sort of fantastic reading here;
http://www.comicsy.co.uk/hibernia/
Please bear in mind that the mag will be posted from the Emerald Isle so please allow up to a week for it to get to you.

or visit the blog http://www.hiberniabook.blogspot.com
or contact me direct at hiberniabook

Its a board production too,
Sincere thanks to Trout, for editing all the text and making it legible, Bolt for stepping up and giving a hand with the design, Mary (of maryanddavid) CFO, and especially The Amstor Computer who has done a fantastic job and spent many a long hour designing and putting up with me changing my mind!

Enough of me, here is the promo with all the information you need to know.

Certainly of interest to this board member who loved Valiant as a kid.

I am Bolt-01 and I endorse this message.

The little of it that I helped on was a joy to read, this is a title that deserves to be around for a long time, and hopefully only the first edition.

Good to see this getting its public reveal. It's a great read - the Art Eds piece in particular is a corker - and I'm happy to have been able to help out. I'd second Bolt's sentiment: David's done great work here, and I hope this book is a success, and that more are forthcoming.

I'm proud to be associated with this publication, even in a small way. I strongly recommend it as a great read.

Also, where else are you going to see extracts from Kevin O'Neill's self-published comic Mek Memories, from way back in the 70s?

That's interesting. I'm a bit of a diehard print fan, but I've long been convinced we're moving to a mainly digital/boutique print future. If it makes projects like this more viable (and as long as I can still get a hold of things in print!) I'd happily embrace it.

Read it on the iPad last night. Really enjoyed it, the interviews were interesting and the piece on art editors was fascinating. Nice layout and design. Well done everyone.

My only minor criticism is that some of the text on the comic pages aren't readable but this is minor and not essential to the reading of the book. Great to see the artwork though.
Also, there is one sentence with no gaps in and a couple of words are printed twice. This of course does not spoil the book but maybe something to look out for in the future.

I'd love to see more of these. Great stuff.

Thanks Albion, so glad you enjoyed it, will rectify the typs in a future edition.

The first review is here from ECBT2000ad and they liked it, they said

'really interesting read for fans of 2000AD'

and

'Enjoyable and interesting, definitely worth checking out.'

Thanks very much for putting this together, David. I downloaded it last thing yesterday, thinking I'd read it today on my day off, but stayed up past my bedtime to read it all in one go. It's a fascinating read about a subject I didn't know much about until now, and it was great to hear from Wagner and O'Neill themselves. Finally seeing something of O'Neill's Mek Memoirs was a treat, am I alone in thinking that Colin MacNeil's fantastic chunky new art style owes something to that period of O'Neill?

My print edition arrived today
It was great to recieve the sneak preview, but its always nice to have a physical copy.
Brilliant, and very interesting stuff, David - so big congrats on putting this together.
And great to see people like Jan Shepheard getting a turn in the spotlight, as well.
Various threads ( the Eagle reprint changes etc) on here have touched upon some of the contents, so if your a fan of those, then this is absolute must.

Come on forum, get buying this!

Really keen to see how this looks in print now. I think the digital edition turned out fairly well, but file size limitations and viewing on a screen make print my preference - be great to see it in front of me :-)

My print copy arrived today - haven't had time to fully digest it yet, but it's a very visually attractive publication, well-designed and stylish, but also very clear and direct in its layout and features. A quick skim suggests the logo-design section / interview with Kev O'Neill to be a particular highlight, and as Judge Jack says, the whole thing is particularly valuable in shining a light on some undersung and influential figures. Great stuff, cheers for this, David and co.!

Received mine in the post today and after a first pass, it's a huge thanks to all concerned. In a year that has seen a number of timely and worthwhile publications about british comics, it's magic that one of the best has been saved for last. Please tell us you are at least PLANNING on doing more, and that it's crossed your mind to approach kev o'neill about reprinting the entirety of mek memoirs...

Irish Comic News have been kind enough to mention the book - http://www.irishcomicnews.com/2012/11/hibernia-comics-presents-one-eyed-jack-and-the-death-of-valiant/

re: Mek Memoirs. I'd love to see moe of this printed. When David forwarded on the snippets artwork for the "Art Editors" chapter to me, it leapt out at me - like stumbling across some kind of missing link, a "proto-ABCs/Ro-Busters" - and it would be fascinating to see the whole thing out there.

QuotePlease tell us you are at least PLANNING on doing more,

Definatly more planned, I have about half the material collected for a second and third book, I have a pretty good idea of what they are like and I have a plan for a fourth!
Whether it happens depends on a few things, time is one another is if I can manage to sell enough to convince the CFO that another book is a good idea.
So if there is anyone you think would like one, point them towards http://www.comicsy.co.uk/hibernia/

Quotethat it's crossed your mind to approach kev o'neill about reprinting the entirety of mek memoirs...

The question has been asked, we will see.

Comic legend Lew Stringer has been kind enough to review the book and give it a mention on his blog - http://lewstringer.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/remembering-valiant-era.html

For anyone interested in Kev O'Neill's work, there's a link at the bottom there to his early work, including another little snippet of "Mek Memoirs".

Wow! Thanks for the link, Amstor; and thanks especially for directing me to that link to the early Kev O'Neill retrospective. It's amazing how quickly he developed that distinctive style, and those horror poster comics must go for a bomb nowadays. A boob and a beheading in Seventies kids comics - the wee toerag was pushing his luck even back then! I don't think I'd read anywhere else of Jack Adrian's involvement in Mek Memoirs either. Keep bugging O'Neill about reprinting that and you've got one pledge to buy right here.

They're great, aren't they? Hopefully David will get a positive response from O'Neill about MM - it really does look fantastic, beyond its novelty as an ABC/Ro-Busters "predecessor".

I see that John Wagner recommended OEJATDOV (that's what I'm calling it now) on Facebook earlier. What a nice guy he is! Here's what he posted:

Today I'm shamelessly plugging One-Eyed Jack and the Death of Valiant, a look back on the comic I edited oh-so-many years ago and my part in its downfall. Includes a lot of background on all the people and characters involved. Informative, interesting, a bit different from your usual comic retrospective - highly recommended. Newly out from Hibernia at £3.99.

I have had no news on Mek Memoirs yet, but while looking for  something completly different in Starlord, I cam across a panel from it. In Starlord no 3 there is a Survivors Guide, and the panel with the RoboDino is half a page from Mek. The background while not from Mek is very similar to the content.

Maryanddavid all I can say is wow! I have only just come across this thread and reading through it is a trip down memory lane, the revelation for me though was the rediscovery of The Doomlord of Nox.
I saw your Facebook profile pic and instantly memories came flooding back that I used to read this when I was a kid. I can see me purchasing this very soon as it all now seems fresh in my head again, his outfit, the ring all of it!! I have honestly not thought about this for 25-30 years, but now I cannot wait to read it again.
Once a bit more cash is available I will also be looking at picking up 'One Eyed Jack and the Death of Valiant' as that sounds a good read and all of the positive reviews cannot be wrong.

I had chance to e-mail Carlos, so i thought id ask about this, David and he seems to think it was originally drawn for a Spanish fanzine.
And that sometime later the image was then used as a cover for these reprints.
Though it was never intended to be a 'cover', as such.
