Title: Primevil: New World - Series 6 or Series 1, as the case may be!
Post by: COMMANDO FORCES on 05 January, 2013, 11:53:48 PM
This spin-off series starts this week on Watch, Tuesday 8th Jan at 21:00. It is repeated in the week as well, just in case anyone misses the opener Wed at 20:00 and Friday at 21:00.

I suppose I'll have a wee look and see if it's better than the UK version!

I hope this is suitable for kids. My lad loves Primeval and has been going on about this for months. The post watershed time is a concern.

From what I gather the young lad from the UK version is in the first episode, to link them.

SBT will know if it's okay for children, as he's seen the first episode online. From what I saw the other day when it was previewed on the channel, it does look the same but then again, they didn't show anyone being eaten in the clips!

It's been on US/Canadian telly.  Surprised it hasn't been on over here already.

No f-bombs or graphic nudity, but there's a lot of gore, lesser swears like shit, pissed, bastard, etc, and some shagging.  They even do an episode based around a weed farm run by evil stoners.  The start of the first episode made it look like they were going to do a Q the Winged Serpent homage, but it was nothing as interesting, with the main character chasing dinos "because" and never explaining why he needs to do this "on his own" despite having a team with him all the time, and then one of them gets killed so he's all like "I can't put anyone else in danger, I must work alone" and then sends the team in.  It also adds "sleazy" to its quiver very quickly by having the nerdy girl who walks around in her underpants turn out to have been a bisexual softcore porn model in her spare time so the team has to go save her girlfriend and her porn mates when they're off doing a porn shoot in the woods.  It's like the screenwriter got confused what open documents on his PC were for his job and which ones were for his slash fic so he took a gamble.

My personal preference - and I realise that this may not be the same for others - is also that the actors could maybe try to look a bit interested in what they're doing.  I know it isn't real or anything, and I haven't done any tv acting myself so don't know the exact mechanics of the process, but I am reasonably certain it involves pretending that the script is something that is actually happening at the time and not just words you read out while everyone looks in the same direction.

So it's not bothered about it's target audience anymore, now that is sad. We need stuff like this so Dads and sons can watch exiting/actiony stuff together. Quite depressing really!

It depends what your criteria on 'family entertainment' is. I'd guess it's not (judging from episode one- which has been available legally online on Watch's youtube channel for months, in HD. The rest may be there too, ive not looked) suitable for the same teatime audience as series one to five, but certainly there's nothing that's unsuitable for The Walking Dead audience or twelve or thirteen plus, and it's probably a lot more timid than that, to be honest.

I quite liked the first one, but not enough to watch any more til the boxset is available cheaply. Like all north american tv shows, i had to force myself to watch it, and its very hard to care.

Ah well, there's one disappointed 7 year old in the X household - and two less viewers. Seems silly to move away from the core audience.

Yep - sounds like a dropped ball. Especially when Avengers shows that you can do fun romps that entertin the whole family without resorting to sweary and sweaty.

Fortunately Tiny Tips is not so Tiny any more and we can probably risk watching this, legally, on Watch Youtube - thanks for the headsup.

We watched Epidose 1 in seven minute chunks on Youtube (via the Blu-Ray player) so it wasn't the best viewing experience.

I couldn't see extra sleeze (is the pron shoot stuff in another episode? similarly the "I must work alone" stuff) but there was certainly more blood and mangled victims on display.

It really was spectacularly by the numbers stuff though - they've looked at the mechanics of a Primeval episode but removed all heart (Abby and Conor) and wit (anything to do with Lester) and replaced with characterless and charismaless models.

I don't think it will be troubling our viewing schedule again.

Hurrah, classic Primeval!  Tell me more, Prof!

Aw poot.

That sentence started out so well, and ended so badly.   :(

It wouldn't have been so bad - admirable and proper, even - if it had been presented matter-of-factly as part of life's rich pagent, but the show is really in your face about it, the first hint of the script and character direction coming in a previous episode when she says "I used to go here until I broke up with the star quarterback (long pause, flirty look, bats eyelashes) turns out we were sleeping with the same cheerleader."  And then in a later episode with the porn shoot stuff the script really draws attention to the character's past and keeps coming back to it, mentioning it over and over again to each successive cast member yet somehow it still manages to avoid giving her any personality.
It's the most juvenile and pandering kind of sleaze, made all the more galling when you consider that even Scooby Doo has a matter-of-fact gay character now, and no BS, it is handled there - in a show about a talking dog whose arch enemy is a fifty year old talking parakeet voiced by the mad scientist from Human Centipede - with a maturity that makes stuff like Primeval: New World make me slightly ashamed to be a sci-fi fan.

Aye, but it's a bit unfair to compare anything to current Scooby Doo, which just like the Prog is enjoying its second Golden Age with the Mystery Incorporated/Crystal Cove run, continuity errors aside... it's splendid stuff.

The cleverest part of the 'gay character' thing in Scooby Doo is that it avoids the obvious, as pursued by the live-action films.

I only compared it to the first kids' show with a lesbian character in it that I could think of, but I guess I could compare it to the late 90s Superman instead - and even with a 17 year head start on a cartoon for children, Primeval is found wanting and sad.
