Cardiff Comics Expo (http://www.fantasyevents.org/cicae/index.html) this year looks like a blast, especially for fans of 2000 AD.
Not only do we have JUDGE MINTY getting a screening but Zarjaz will be premiereing issue 17. Not only that but after the successful appearance by Colin Macneil at Thought Bubble we have decided to have a second table for sketching & signing at Cardiff.
If you are a 2000 AD art droid (or even proto-droid) and you feel like resting your weary perambulatory unit for a while, let me know and we will arrange a time to suit. There are no fees involved and any funds generated are purely the droids own.
Cardiff Comic Expo is always a blast
I have a question about Cardiff : how the hell do I get there?
Seems like flying to Bristol and train is the only option...
Anybody have a better (cheaper) one?
Can't you get a coach?
Doesn't seem to be a direct one from here. I'll have a proper look this evening, but I thought I'd ask the interweb to do my work for me..!
Cardiff airport has flights from Glasgow (You're in Inverness right?) So I guess it depends what part of the trip you want to drive. National Express seem to run a service if you don't mind a 15 hour trip.

Cheers, James. That's what I'm talking about! Do the lazy man's work for him!
Don't mind a long bus trip at all, especially if it's cheap!

flybe.com shows a flight from Glasgow to Cardiff on Fri 1st for £35 and one back on Mon 4th for £45... 90 minutes each way.
(Remind me again why we pay so much for our rail fares?)
EDIT: The same trip by National Express appears to be £45 each way...
Cheers

I would love to travel by train, but fuck that!

I'll be at Cardiff - because, well because that's the first place this year I'll be selling The Psychedelic Journal :D

Never been before - still not sure whether I'm commuting back to Bristol or trying to find somewhere to stay in the city though!
I'll be staying, but I need to book my room still. Cursed lack of funds...
I don't know if there'll be any convenrrtion rates, but the convention hotel is very expensive - I managed to find a pretty cheap deal at the Tanes hotel about half a mile away.
Was recommended Cardiff Expo at Leeds by a variety of good folk so suck-it-and-see I guess.
Hotel booked (ticket being a problem)
Hopefully have some new Zarjaz work to show by then.
Dunk!
I have room for two in my spare room if anyone is stuck for a hotel. The downside is you'll probably have to join me for a massive piss-up in town before we head home.
I'll be there. Looking forward to it!

Plus you'll have to share a double blow-up
Sheep mattress. If you're cool with that, PM me and we can work out the details. I'll get extra supplies of Febreeze in to cover the smell of cat piss/wet dog ahead of the date.
Woah, I didn't realise how popular the blow up sheep was gonna be! My flat is now going to be full to the brim on Sat/Sun of the event.
Sorry if I couldn't accommodate you. See what I did there...?
I'll have a spare double room too, round the corner from the munkeh.

Well done, see you there sir.

Yup, can get them off the website

Will be tickets on the door but pre-booking is a lot less hassle
Cheers for the link Rich, will grab em in the week.
It's gonna be great fun. Last time I went Richard laid on naked men for the womenfolk at the local pub, so the blokes could chat without being disturbed!
I remember reading that. There was a judge Burdis in civvies intervention if I'm correct. That's what you get drinking in Weatherspoons though.
You are correct and it was only a day out in Cardiff as well. Nearly as crazy as my drive to Bristol just for the after con fun
Heh, thing is thats probably the closest pub to the mercure though I would suggest the Poets Corner just up from it. Better clientele.

....Earnest Willows has become the default Expo pub prior to shifting back to the Mercure for a few more over-priced beers..PCs is too small to squeeze everyone in - we pretty much took over the EW last year and intend to do the same again. :)
Minty screening time and 2000AD panel time should be nailed down tonight, so I'll post details once I know myself :)

Panel details not going live for a while but I've had the schedule approved - panel (Willsher, Worley, Davis-Hunt & Gallagher) 1210 - 1300, Minty starts at 1630 and will have a Q and A afterwards.

Well kids, I have arrived.. I'll most definitely be there, as I have no excuse. Beverages must be had, shaps..
Let down by my Brother (who lives in Cardiff) I thought Friday night was bust, but just got a great last minute hotel deal so will be around for a few pre-con beers.
Where and when?
Dunk!
Looking forward to this , especially hanging at the zarjaz table on Saturday, drinks on Saturday night, and the two panels on Sunday listed above. Oh, and the Minty film of course. Very excited about that!
I must find somewhere I can get to to see minty with like minded individuals again...
I'm going to get tickets at the door.. Got cash but none tied into my PayPal linked account.. Stupid archaic African banks.. See yinz all there on sat-sun..

Of course sods law has given me an important job interview at 9am Monday morning but I'm sure after Saturday I could do with taking Sunday a bit easy.
I stupidly didn't prebook a ticket.
Anyone with experience of last year - should I be getting there early so they don't sell out at the door?
Anyone know the door price for a weekend ticket?
I also forget to get a ticket, doh! :'(
I know Sunday is £8.00 on the door.
Probably travelling tomorrow, with shite internet connectivity, so any ideas from forum folks on pre-con drinkies?
Time?
Place?
Would be nice to know in advance.
Dunk!
I had 'buy ticket' on my to do list which didn't get done there's always seemed to be a healthy queue there so I'll be erring on the side of caution and get there bout 20 mins before opening time.
What's everyone saying about pre- con Friday drinks? I know myself, crazyfoxmachine and his lady will be at Earnest Willows at a time to be confirmed.
Hello!!
Tickets on the door for the day are £8, and a weekend ticket is £14.
Tickets will be available once all the pre-paid ticket holders have been given their wristbands....we're hoping this will be approx 1045.
We are expecting quite a lot of door sales so either get there dead early to queue, or come along later on in the day, when we will be letting more people in. We'd let everyone in at once if we could but health and safety rules dictate otherwise.
Any other q's please ask on here and I'll try and help
:)
Any secret method to late prebook for us boarders? :-X
Poops...totally forgot this was on!
Any exhibitors staying in the Mercure from the Friday - ?
I could use some help if you are - !

Step out the Mercure, go across the road (careful to look both ways), bear right and take the left on to City Road. It's just up a bit on the right handside of the road (its the Weatherspoons). I'll be down after, just waiting on Owen as I believe you may be.

(I know you also weren't the prick who asked the question about putting Minty onto DVD because more people would buy it than the Urban Dredd movie!)
Cardiff has been great so far. First time I've seen Minty, loved it and can't wait til I can watch it regularly. As usual though having a natter post con is a highlight. Got CFM and jazz staying at chez fett, lovely peoples, Connor and Liz Boyle a lovely talented couple, strontium71 great guy who seems to always have to skulk off early, my Dredd screening mucker judge pal aka shaolin monkey, Cardiff locals James Stacey and House Of Usher who are always quality.super Jim Campbell, Monty Nero and Megabus who are real nice chaps, screening mucker Michael VK who's back in the UK and Brian Tm (another nice guy), Bluemeanie, Stacey and con crush Iz, Dunk who is now jaegerbomb champ, dandontdare super chap, Ben Willsher-bot who was a great chat, judge Burdis another great fella who will happily talk Dredd all evening, along with the ever Zarjaz Dave Bolt 01 and my good mucker Richmond Clements, thanks for making my Friday and Saturday superb. Sunday will be bitter sweet.
We're all in some pub/club having a quiet tipple. Many forum members and Droids but names must be kept secret to protect the innocent ;)
Yeah, good laugh yesterday. Nice to put faces to pseudonyms ;)
To anyone who I rudely forgot to introduce myself to I was the lanky Irish lad pottering about with Mike VK.
Judge Minty was excellent. Glad I got the chance to see it with a bunch of fans before it goes online.
Everyone here knows to go buy Zarjaz, but I'd also encourage everyone to check out the small press table on the left as you come in the front door. Some excellent stuff there from Will Kirkby and Nikki Stu.

Seriously though , I thought I'd try and get the 7pm train , which I just did in time. Don't know what it is about Cardiff but I always seem to get lost when I go home :o
Wonderful day at the Expo - I said to a few people that I much prefer these smaller events as the guests always have more time to chat while drawing. A big thankyou to all the boarders and creators that I spoke to , even for brief moments. I was supposed to be going again today , which is a first , but I didn't set my alarm before bed :(
Want to see Minty again as what I saw was truly excellent. A real labour of love there from all involved. To see this as a short before Urban's Dredd on a cinema screen would be amazing!
Up to date with Zarjaz and Dogbreath now , thanks to Boltie the Wonderdog , and bought some lovely doodles to help his son. Got a great Death sketch as well. Only missed getting a sketch from JDH as I presumed he wasn't sketching until Stacey told me to go and ask him. 'Course , I couldn't find him after that...
Hopefully there'll be just as many of you at the Bristol Con in May , and even more hopefullier there'll be another Cardiff Mini-Con in November.

Ha, bloody lightweight, clearing off at midnight.
We hit the clubs til 4am(ish - might have been later?) with Ben, Dylan, Burdis, that guy from the Scorpion King that looks nothing like a bald Nick Kamen (Connor) and his lovely lady, Usher, erm.... my memory is failing me now... Who else was there?!?
Anyway, home, passed out in front of Dredd 3D about 6am, and Burdis let me lie in for a whole 43 mins longer than he said he would, bellowing at me to get up at 8.43am.
At the convention by 9.30am, and stomped about in my Judge boots until 3pm, scaring little kids, and getting punters down on their knees for photos, with only a corned beef pastie and a cup of tea to keep me going.
And THAT, ladies and gents, is how it is done. ;)
I had better add that for your safety you should not replicate this behaviour at home. I am a trained professional and likely to be dead before 50.

Ha! Awesome! Is it me or does the stormtrooper look worried?
I had such a better experience compared to last year, and am a little bummed that the drive back to Swansea cut the festivities short on Saturday night.. But I'm sure we can make up for that in Bristol.. Got lots of reading material, prints and a transformer.. And socks for Herself.. Honestly.. And had tonnes of fun hanging out with all you groovy kids out there.. Thoroughly enjoyed Minty too!
Yes, I own a lot of camo..
I survived, just!
I was just about to go to bed but I thought I'd whack the twitter pics on here before I do.
Let's start with creator beatings ;)
Leigh Gallagher and Ben Willsher

I'll do these individually, so you can scroll sideways if any are massive!
Mike Collins

Patrick Goddard
(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BEYv4_zCcAANMzr.jpg:large)
David Roach
(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BEYw1pDCYAALKCm.jpg:large)
David Roach brought a pile of oricinal art in including this McMahon page alongside Flesh, Ro-Busters, Harlem Heroes, etc...

Despatched Iron Man with Armour Piercing ;)

My only sketch from the weekend and it is a BEAUTY :D
Dredd - Ben Willsher
Death - Leigh Gallagher
Fire - Patrick Goddard
Mortis - Mike Collins
Fear - Patrick Goddard/Dylan Teague

After a long weekend of creator beatings they finally got their own back, or so they think! Alec Worley, Ben Willsher & Jon Davis-Hunt. All the creators were great sports the whole weekend and the team that put the event on were brilliant as well. I would write more but I'm off to bed, at last!

Total War come crawling out of the crete, eh? ;)
Great pics!
My first Cardiff and completely amazing it was too -
Debuted the Journal - which did very well, did a panel which was extraordinarily positive - had lots of luvverly chats at the old Wetherspoons. Will definitely do it again :D

Really enjoyed the con and night. Good to meet a few guys from the forum, like rennaisance man Judda Fett ( awesome work in the new zarjaz and soom cool hip hop too), and Shaolin monkey, for whom Connor Boyle will forever be the bald Nick Kamen. All the droids were charming, too many to mention, and it was a pleasure to spend quality time with the Zarjaz folk Bolt 01 and Rich.. I met Dave Broughton too, who created splendid illustrations for my Strontium Dog story in Dogbreath, and out drew me by about ten sketches to one on Saturday. Talented guys!
Excellent weekend, good to meet old friends and new, some inteersting panels on the 2nd floor (which the hotel people did everything possible to make it hard to get to - I mean, a hotel with no stairs?) Stacey's news-quiz type questions were a particular highlight, especially as Leigh Gallagher got more and more annoyed at his inability to answer them. Second viewing of Minty confirmed it's awesomeness. Got enjoyably wrecked with good company on Saturday night, and sloped off quite early and hungover on Sunday. Can't post any pics yet cos my broadband's stuffed at the mo (I'm in the library)
Montynero on Saturday night:
Ha-ha! It was three dinners, lets be fair. If only they'd had that pie. I'd still be eating now!
Hmm, actually, I am eating now. Though there's been time in between when I wasn't...
Yeah, but you were thinking about eating weren't you? :)
It was great to meet you monty, and I'll do a proper post later this week everyone. Cardiff was ace.
Cheers Monty, good to meet you and have a butchers at your excellent portfolio. Looking forward to seeing your current project in print. Your dinner skills are extraordinary.
Hey,
So awesome weekend, cool to put some more faces to names though I'm sure I was my usual anti-social self and just nodded at people before sloping off... Iz is the nice one.
Highlights included Richmond Clements swearing at my mother in law then trying to sell her his book with "It has beheadings and shit"
Saturday night in the Ernest Willows (note to self : dont buy beers on a two-for-a-fiver deal, you just drink them twice as fast and get hammered. Even if Desperados is luurverly)
Burdis being Burdis
The growing laughter during the post Minty screening at THE QUESTION WHICH NEVER ENDED
Seeing Minty on the big screen, especially sat behind art droids making little appreciative coo-ing noises
The always excellent 2000AD panel and being present at the birth of DC's new hit title "John Constantine : Magical Scouser"
Hanging out with the droids, all of whom were cool as fuck. Special thanks to Patrick Goddard for making me feel better after Jon Davis-Hunt and Leigh Gallagher made me feel like a midget. Lanky bastards.
Getting a spider-head-monster sketch from the Thing from Mike Ploog, who did the original storyboards and concept art on the movie
Picking up a copy of the Time Travel anthology and seeing the amazing job Judda Fett did on my story. Much obliged sir!
The Marc Bolan incident
Lady Festina refusing to let me leave the pub on Friday tlll she'd squeezed my arse (thats the next story comp in the bag then)
And the awesome Leigh Gallagher, Ben Willsher, Alec Worley and Jon Davis-Hunt who presented Iz with the pic below, all framed up, at the end of the weekend.

As some of you know I had a job interview first thing Monday morning (today) so was a little stressed about that and as a result ducked out early on Sunday to come home and do some revising, so apologies for not saying proper goodbyes. I'll be nicer at NEXT YEARS CARDIFF EXPO... where I will remember that I'm out in the night so eating something during the day is probably a good idea seeing as I'm an old fart now

Oh, very nice - well done on that.
Any chance of posting a piccy?
Great pic - thanks to all involved, enjoyed doing the Q+A, even that question that felt like it was being translated multiple times into the same language...
Sorry I couldn't hang around, but I'd gone off to see my folks, so it was a flying visit...
- Steve

An exclusive peak at the NEW 2000 AD logo that was released on the Sunday morning ;)

2000ad gang sign! Glad you liked the art for your Psychedelic Journal of Time Travel strip Bluemeanie. Dig the Ploog you copped plus the nice post con piece for Iz. After the Desperados deal at the pub a grunt or hearty mutha
fucka
is a valid farewell :D
A random pic that turned up on Facebook:

In my defence, she said she didn't mind swearing, and your panicked face every time I did it just made me swear all the more!
Don't think I dropped a 'C' bomb though, did I..? There's always next year for that.
Some great pics here, including the Zarjaz folk:

HA! Love the fact that the caption reads "Weird and wonderful characters from cartoons, comics and films..." and yep everyone in there is in some sort of fun cosplay uniform... well until you get to that middle phoot of the apparently 'weird and wonderful characters' Bolt and Richmond (And Steve Minty in the background)
Sci-Fi mash up!

With the eating machine that is Montynero sitting in the foreground.
Thanks to Bolt and Richard for being great hosts on their table. I think I did about 7 or 8 hours of sketching on the Saturday....loved it! Met some really nice people like fellow artist Matt Herbert who has drawn the wonderful 'Shakara' in the latest Zarjaz #17 and the gifted Monty Nero not to mention Judda Fett, Brian, IZ, Stacey, Bluemeanie, Connor, Lizzy, CFM, dunk, Jim Campbell and the other other pro's like Ben, Leigh, JDH, Alec and more. What a top weekend.
Anyway back to the artwork before bed. Here is a small section of the latest colour picture I'm working on.

Nice!
Often rewatch the brilliant
Terror takes shape documentary from The Thing DVD. Rob Bottin's full of schoolboy enthusiasm when recounting the tale of him getting to work with his hero, Mike Ploog.
Lovely stront Megabus, good to meet you see your portfolio (those mega blocks on your latest page are very nice). Glad you like Shakara too.
Dude, it was great to meet you and I have to say this photo made me laugh so much - what the hell face am I pulling! Can I nick it, I think it's mint!

I had better add that for your safety you should not replicate this behaviour at home. I am a trained professional and likely to be dead before 50.

Ben Willsher has altered this picture somehow ;)

Yeah - the badge ribbons weren't that shade of red.
Classic!
Is that the regulation number of chain links? I smell a Jimp...
Cheers
