Title: 2013 Free Comic Book Day 2000 AD

Just saw the cover in Previews, so it means that your local Comic Shop will be ordering theirs very soon!

This contains a BRAND NEW DREDD called "The Jimps Club" about a club of Judge impersonators competing against each other to see who can last the longest on the harsh streets of the Big Meg
Plus a BRAND NEW ZOMBO called "Planetronix: Mohawk of MENACE!"
Plus the Visible Man, Indigo Prime and D.R. & Quinch!

By the way, the cover is a homage to the following:-
Action Comics 1
Amazing Fantasy 15 &
Giant Sized X-Men 1 (the first modern team up)

Oh my giddy aunt how fantastic is that cover! I mean that's really fantastic. Shame it doesn't count for the cover of the year as we'd have an early contender.

Comic looks great too.

Will this be the 3rd year running that the Free Comic Book Day Prog does not get into my hands?

PROBABLY!

Hey. Hey. Hey Tharg. Howsabout releasing the previous FCBD Progs on the iPad Newstand? And making sure this years is also made available?

That sure would be swell.

Great idea.
I'd even settle for just the 'new' material being available (including covers).

We have this discussion every year. And the answer is *still* 'No, that would defeat the whole purpose of Free Comic Book Day'.

I'm not entirely sure I get this. The purpose of Free Comic Book Day is to promote your comic and hopefully drive sales. If you make more free content available on the app, people are more people are likely to purchase digital back progs. Or if that's not their bag, go find print copies.

I suppose if you feel FCBD is about putting bodies in comic shops, I guess I can see why not having a digital option would make sense. But I just see it as two different demographics, and a missed opportunity.

Also frustrating for your US fans who have enough trouble getting Progs, let alone the FCBD issue.

As I understand it, the shops themselves pay for the printing. So it is primarily about getting people into the shops.

The purpose of Free Comic Book Day is to get people to go into comic book stores. That is why it was created, that is why it is supported by stores, that is why we participate.

Making the FCBD comic easily available elsewhere not only defeats the purpose of the whole exercise but doesn't exactly endear us to store owners. Yes we hope it drives sales, but it's primarily about visibility amongst those stores.

Unlike the Progs, our FCBD issues are not printed here and then shipped - they're printed along with all the other FCBD comics by the good folks behind FCBD and distributed the same way. So long as a store orders some as part of the promotion, they'll get them.

With the greatest of respect, this is the third FCBD since I started at Rebellion and we have this same debate EVERY year. It's quite simple - if you want a copy of the FCBD issue, go to a comic book store or get a friend to get one for you.

There is already a HUGE free 2000 AD sampler on the app, not to mention the DREDD movie prequel tie-in. Just bunging more and more free stuff onto there doesn't encourage people to sign up, it just reinforces the idea that they're going to get more free stuff.

Covers and previews for the FCBD 2013 titles are here:
http://www.freecomicbookday.com/Home/1/1/27/981

2000AD has a 7 page preview, including a couple of pages of Jimps Club.

Preview (PDF):
http://www.freecomicbookday.com/catalogimages/STK_IMAGES_PDF/STK520001-540000/STK525394.pdf

Blurb:
"Home of Judge Dredd, 2000 AD is the UK's award-winning weekly SF anthology comic.  In this bumper 48-page FCBD special, The Jimps Club is a brand new Judge Dredd story about a club of Judge impersonators competing against each other to see who can last the longest on the harsh streets of the 'Big Meg'. They've got being a Judge down to a fine art, nailed the mannerisms and the stance, but all it takes is one mistake for Dredd to spot an imposter...; Zombo returns in the all-new Planetronix: Mohawk Of Menace! - the failed government(TM) robot defense force Planetronix(TM) are on a mission to just say NO to DRUGS! But when Yellow Lion(TM) starts getting into insidious punk rock music, Zombo has to intervene; plus thrill-pounding action from The Visible Man, dimensional instability issues for Indigo Prime and dubious thermo-nuclear advice from alien delinquents DR & Quinch."

Judge Dredd Classics also has a cover, but no preview.

Plus: bonus "Walter the Wobot" strips appearing in colour for the very first time, all beautifully illustrated by the brilliant Brian Bolland!"

Saturday, May 4th, 2013:

"Legendary 2000 AD artist Ron Smith is to appear at a signing in London to mark Free Comic Book Day – his first signing for well over a decade.

Revered by Judge Dredd fans for his satirical and, at times, bizarre take on the world of Mega-City One, the 89-year-old artist will be joined by writers Dan Abnett (Sinister Dexter, Insurrection) and Al Ewing (Zombo), and artist Ben Willsher (Judge Dredd) for this fantastic signing."

And it sounds like a good excuse for a Southers gathering.

FCBD is indeed about getting folk in to comic shops, hence the position Molch-R is referring to.

And what Judge Jack says... WHS is not a comic shop, it also isn't a book shop...

There was a good turnout at The Comic Shop (http://www.thecomicshop.net/index.php) today.  We had to wait in line to get in the door as they were holding people back to prevent too much of a crush inside.  They had heaps of everything except the Star Wars title which had gone by the time we got inside.  The man on the door said they'd got in 8,000 free titles and I saw bundles of strapped up 2000ADs in addition to the piles on the free tables.  It looked good seeing so many 2000AD and Judge Dredd titles all in one place as normally I only ever see one or two (if any) at a newsagent.

They upped the limit to six free titles per person so I managed to snag a spare set as well as a set for me and my brother.

Going to my local comic shop to pick this up this morning, which is sadly closing. As I'm a 2000ad and Meg subscriber and get all my trades from amazon etc I very rarely buy anything in there (although I did get the first two IDW Year One issues there), so out of respect I feel I should purchase something other than just getting my freebie and pissing off again!

There's stacks of Marvel and DC GN's in there, all sorts of other stuff as well so can anyone recommend anything particularly good I could pick up? I'm talking like a complete story, something that's not gonna make me want to immerse myself in that universe and spend loads more cash on comic books (as I have done with Dredd over the last few years!!)

What I learned from FCBD 2013 is that Travelling Man is much better than Forbidden Planet, at least in Manchester. TM has about a quarter of FP's floorspace and whilst it was a bit chocker, the queue never stalled as people were directed clockwise around a table by a nice man offering free sweeties You could have as many titles as you like, 1 of each only. Bish bosh sorted in 10 minutes.

FP on the other hand had a queue round the block (90% of whom were clutching TM bags!) and people were only being admitted in small batches - half an hour to get inside to join a smaller queue. The free comics were all on one shelf and people were being asked to make their selection one at a time whilst a lady yelled "six comic maximum, sorry" every few minutes to people joining the queue. Didn't seem to have as many titles on offer either.

Still, I came away with a splendid haul and the 2000ad one was by far the most substantial - six stories, two of them brand new, over 48 pages. Some of the Marvel/DC ones were more like pamphlets than comics.

And yes Hawkmonger I didn't forget your free prog - also picked up a copy of the IDW Judge Dredd Classics for you. I can post 'em if you like (PM me your address) or we could meet for a pint or a coffee in town if you're around (I'm in Hulme)

Got to Brums Nostalgia at 9 (having been encouraged by staff to turn up, though not having checked the time) to find they were letting in people who had tickets... Plebs can only get in at 9:30 I am informed.  This hadnt been mentioned by enthusiastic staff bod, so I reckoned I'd try Forbidden Planet instead - walked over, and only a small queue, and better yet, doors shut.

So 9:30 comes and I am handed a bag at the door with a few comics in... this is nice, but where are the tables so I can grab a 2000AD... turns out, there are no tables, jsut a "random" bag.  I enquire after the 2000AD issue, but "random" it is, so back over to Nostalgia.  By this time theres a weighty queue that snakes around the inside of the shop and out.   At least they are allowing you to take your pick, and I get to the table with about 7 ot 8 progs to spare - phew!  But also bah! at the general complication of what should have been a simple and fun event.  The Rigmarole made me more likely to use Amazon than my FNCS to be honest!

I got one! I got one!

My local comic shop here in Ontario put in an order for the 2000AD issue without telling me. I didn't expect it, and it was only done because I was chatting with the owner about not getting 2000AD since we emigrated. How kind of him!

As if that wasn't enough, he put a copy aside for me when it turned out to be really popular. I could see the penny had dropped and he's now put in a regular order for the prog.

Hail Tharg!

Well much to my surprise when I rolled up to my LCS at about 9.10 this morning there was a right old queue outside. So I waited patiently with my littlest little 'un (too young to appreciate the importance of the trip!) Anyway got lucky and got the last one literally. Got the IDW Dredd as well. So all good here, but alas unable to get extras for other folk this time.

Somehow the two year-old behaved and was extremely good and patient while we waited in the 45-minute queue at Great Escape here in Mayretta GA.  I got the last copy of the freebie prog, and sadly it's in pretty bad shape, with an ugly tear from the top that goes down almost two inches through the first twelve pages.  BAH.

Went by another shop to try my luck for a second copy.  Line there was an hour long.  I'd asked too much of the toddler as it was.

The prog is *terrific*.  Ten out of ten to the Nerve Centre for this one.  Sensible ads for other products, great choice of material, different styles, not relying too much on the heavyweight characters, this is just a really good collection.

I bagged 2. 1 for me and one for a lapsed squaax at work.

My son snagged one too but later at Royal Armouries he volunteered hid to be donated to someone who had missed out. My kind son will read my colleague's copy... Mine got signed by Peter Doherty! Peter was there giving tips on drawing as part of the Superheroes stuff they are doing this Bank Holiday.

I went to my local comic book store at 1:00 on Saturday in anticipation of having my first physical copy of  a 2000AD comic.
Even at 1:00 the line was wrapped around the building!  Ending up waiting a little over an hour to get in, but knew it would be worth it to get the 2000AD and IDW comic.

Once we got in (letting in 12 at a time) made my way to the FCBD table and.....

Nothing.

All the 2000AD & IDW comics were gone.

I was deflated.  Couldn't believe it.  And it was my first FCBD!

Still glad I went though.  Saw some very passionate fans there.

Looks like I'll have to search eBay for these "Free" comics!!

Looks like I'll have to search eBay for these "Free" comics!!

DisposableHeroes still have them in http://www.disposableheroes.co.uk/free-comic-book-day-2013/cat_362.html (http://stock) for 99p, bagged, boarded and delivered for less than a £1

Well me and the wee men waited half an hour to get into FP. Got to the front door and the boss shouts "sorry folks but theres not much left". Everyone groans and mutters. He then spots me and goes "Alright mate I've put your lot aside" and hands me a bag of goodies.

There was still quite a pile of 2000ads when I got in though so me and the boys got one each.  :)

They also had a 20% discount on GN's. Which was nice.

Nobody's entitled to anything here. The point is to have a fun promotional event that gets people into shops. If you miss out - as I did for many years, due to living in a remote place - that's a shame, but it doesn't mean anyone gets to undermine the purpose of the day.

The argument takes place every year, and it goes like this:

Comics people: "Hey, let's promote our great work and have fun. Here's some free stuff!"

Most fans: "Hey, free stuff and fun! Thanks! I feel good!"

Comics people: "You're welcome! We feel good too!"

A few angry fans: "I didn't get free stuff. I feel bad. Give me the free stuff now!"

Comics people: "No. You're missing the point."

The angry few fans: "I feel bad. You must feel bad too. I will fill the internet with bad feeling."

I suppose the angry few are entitled to make a point of view but I am so very, very sick of it. Free Comic Book Day is great. I took part and so did my kids. So did lots of other people and their kids. If you didn't take part, and missed out, then next time you should find a way to take part.

Exactly where in my post did I come off as entitled or angry??

Maybe you should have re-read my post again instead of trying to pick a fight.

I said I was deflated.  I'm pretty sure that does not equal angry or entitled.

And at the end of my post I said

"Still glad I went though.  Saw some very passionate fans there."

I'm not sure what your problem is, but you read way too much into what I said.

Selling them at a mark up is wrong beyond belief. DisposableHeroes prices  is covering postage. My local comic store is 45 minute drive and I hate queues (just ask the missus after I've come back from the local fishshop empty handed because the queue was out of the door) and packed in spaces (again why I don't do supermarket shopping!) so there's zero chance of me cramming into a cbs on fcdb when I might come away empty handed or can have the issues delivered to my door with my weekly pick ups and continue to support DH, an independent comic book store based in Ireland.

In the end it is all down to luck if you manage to grab hold of the comics that you want, unless you hit an event like the lucky few in London yesterday.

I was informed by my local that after the first FCBD a few speculators took loads of certain titles to make a killing on eBay.
The next FCBD had a few shops not putting certain items out and then they sold them on eBay.

What can you do!

Yesterday at the end of the signing I grabbed four copies of each, as there were a couple of hundred left, to get signed by all four droids. I had my own stuff signed earlier, as there was a four item limit with Ron, due to obvious reasons. While everyone had gone to the pub I hoped that I would be able to do a favour for three people on the forum but if I couldn't do it, I couldn't do it!
I waited till the end and got Al, Ben, Dan and Ron to sign it and I told them why I was doing it and they thought it was a good idea.
Those people can see what is coming their way with the next picture  ;)

CF's right - it's all about luck. Sometimes you miss out and sometimes you get lucky. This year I got lucky!  :)

This FCBD stuff shouldn't be for sale from retailers, especially not on the day itself. It's a promotional event designed to help retailers. They're shooting themselves in the foot.

I only made it out to my LCS at around 11.30 am yesterday morning, by then the stampede had dissipated and I was given free reign to pick the bones of the shelves....got a copy of the IDW Dredd Classics & Walking Dead, but the Prog was long gone. :-*

Still though....good news that it was so popular, and hopefully copies made it into the hands of some impressionable youngsters.

Have taken the advice above in this thread and bought the Prog via Disposable Heroes...coupla quid postage cost seems reasonable enough to me for some new Flint art!

Yeah the covers that are on the covers have been drawn individually. He's already had a number of requests for them and so will be putting them on eBay at some point to be fair to everyone. He said he'd do that after the comic was released, so with any luck some point in the none too distant.

I went down to that London for the day (1.5 hours by train) mainly so I could shake Ron Smith's hand and get him to sign these two beauties.

I visited Orbital comics in the morning which had a queue out the door to the corner of Great Portland street. Once in the shop they were limiting customers to 3 free comics each but you could choose which titles you wanted. They had run out of the Dredd classics but I picked up the FCBD prog and also the Mouseguard one-shot for my nephew who loves that comic.

At Forbidden Planet no queue as they were handing out goody bags at the front door containing a selection of the free comics. Sensibly they had an adult bag or a kid friendly version. Mine had the IDW classics in it.

Then downstairs in the book section they were se

oops, pressed post instead of preview :-[

Down in the book section they were setting up for the signing. I met some other forum members and had a pleasant chat about original art. FP had plenty of copies of both the Prog and the Classics so I picked up an extra copy of each. I was thinking of putting them on eBay to offset some of my travel costs but the spirit of free comic book day and loyalty to the forum changed my mind and I have offered them to another member for p&p only.

After the signing I met up with my daughter at Gosh comics in Soho and bought a signed copy of the new Halo Jones collection. So all in all a grand day out.

The intention of FCBD is to get more people into comic shops and, particularly, to attract some new readers. Certainly the tills at Orbital and Gosh were doing brisk business and there were lots of kids at both shops getting their freebie Sonic the Hedgehogs, Adventure Time or VizKids comics. Forbidden Planet is always busy so it was difficult to tell if it was having an impact there.

As you can tell I had a fine time and will probably repeat the trip next year even if there is no signing, although I will probably try and get to Orbital a bit earlier in the day.

I was busy with work unfortunately, so by the time I dropped by the local shop they only had some Walking Dead FCBD issues, nothing else unfortunately. I wasn't expecting to see much left anyways, but I guess a good thing is that the 2000 AD one did leap out to someone and they got it. Either that or there's some closeted Dredd fan around here I'm not aware of.

I was stuck (yeah, poor me) in NYC for FCBD and spectacularly failed to get the 2000AD issue* - all gone, everywhere I went; no huge surprise and hopefully a good sign for the dissemination of Thrill Power.  Picked one up from Disposable Heroes later, which is fine by me - I've seen other copies being sold via eBay at a really piss-taking price, but from where I'm sitting, DH are just trying to make these available for a minimal sum to those that would otherwise miss out.

* The Complete Zaucer of Zilk was also sold out everywhere I tried (the three Midtown Comics, St Mark's and Forbidden Planet - all gone); managed to find it online in the end (TFAW).

I got both throught he letterbox yesterday, many thanks to Eamon1961 for send them over to me, gent.

The Prog is great, great mix of stories, the new Dredd was particularly good, im a sucker for Willshers art, and the Kennedy Dredd too was a treat as I dont remember it. Henry Flint IMO is now up there with Carlos, his art is just incredible.

The IDW one I wasnt so crazy about. The content was good, but the colouring just did nothing for me. The colouring itself was fine, but I just dont see the point of colouring art that was meant to be published in B&W. Horses for courses and all that.

Cheers again Eamon.

Regarding the colouring in the IDW FCBD, though not essential, im liking what ive seen so far.
As ill be getting the Block Mania/Apocalypse War series, i suspect that they to will feature the same (slightly incongruous) empty space at the bottom, due to the differences between the Prog and the US comic page sizes?
