Looks like its happening again with an announcement due tomorrow...
http://www.glasgowcomiccon.com/
TBH I hope they have a new venue as nice as the church is it was mobbed last year and splitting it into 2 separate buildings was a bit of a pain.
There's also this but not sure if its aimed more at tv/film...
http://www.develop-online.net/press-releases/93733/MCM-Scotland-Comic-Con-2013
I was at some scifi thingy at SECC a few years ago and the highlight was meeting Archie Gemmill. Make of that what you will.
And even if you don't fancy it then there's always beer.
Great! Well up for this.
Yay an excuse for the pub! Will you be going again this year mark? And do you have any odds on for bookings? 10p says dave gibbons if he's livin in uk.
I've been dragged to a couple of the memorabilia things but it was all ex dr who's and bit part star trek stars. Owing to not watching tv I had no idea who anyone was but the toys were good x
I'm game. I think it clashed with a family do last year.
It's on 13/14 of July at the CCA.
Tickets on sale 14 Feb.
ach, school hols, not sure if I'll be around... :(
The CCA (or Third Eye Centre, as old farts like me would still insist on calling it) is a much better venue, and in a location that doesn't involve a 15-minute walk to find a pub where you won't get stabbed.

The Minty screening was at the CCA, it's a very nice space.
Yeah, I'll second that, very impressed with it.
Hey Steve G/Minty, is it possible you will be back at the Glasgow con with the film?
Well, the film will be online by that point anyway - but they did ask about showing it, which we're happy for them to do.
It's all a bit up in the air as to whether we'll be up there - I can't really see past March at the moment.
Cheers
Steve
Im so lovin Colin macneils guest description on the gcon website and yay colin is confirmed...
'He is a proud recipient of an MM and Bar, the Millinery Medal, i.e. you can always spot his hat in the bar!'

Yep, we would be more than happy for them to screen it, after the usual permissions had been arranged.
However, it's more a case of - would it be that much of a draw after it's been online? Perhaps something a little more 'throw away' than taking up room in the schedule? Put it on the telly in the bar ;)

Well the Variety Bar after the Wagner talk last week at the CCA was projecting Amine and Sin City onto one wall of the pub... confused the feck out of me until I found out everyone else could see it too :-\
I was in 2 minds whether to go this year but Carlos has swung it. Tickets for weekend bought. And this year Im gonna bring the weans, God help me.

To swap for comics? :)
How dare you imply such a thing, I'll take nothing less than an original Carlos Dredd.
The line up for this is getting better and better.
yay alan grant, barry kitson, pete doherty and mike ploog confirmed x
Well that seems to be the final update and last guest will make Judo one happy stalker
Now if Davis is sketching do I get Captain Britain or D.R and Quinch?
Up for this totally! Any Souther softies plan on making the trip? I take it they have panels and auctions and stuff? I mean I'm happy hanging around the dealers all day but if it's just going to the pub my £20 may be better invested there.
Robbie morrison and yayay my gorgeous stoner boy himself Frank Quitely!! I got in trouble off him for hugging him too hard lolol
Buttonman -They have talks and Q & A's, so you should be able to chat with fellow artists.
Perfect. Hope they get this guy - http://jimllpaintit.tumblr.com/ (http://jimllpaintit.tumblr.com/) needs a couple of pointers from a true master!

that does sound like glasgow! Hehe well yah panels, dealers and all that jazz but not like millions - its in a community arts place not like an exhibition hall or anything. But its glasgow and there is abar on site and yuup probably around 3-4 go to pub properly BUT that's a whole day of annoying people to be had pre pub B-) x x x
Is it possible to pay at the door for this event?
If I recall it sold out well in advance in previous years.
Ok thanks I'll have a check on the web
Huzzah, The Memsabib has just informed me we will not be on a Grand Tour of our country estates at this time so, I'll be there, might even splash out (ooer) on a hotel!
Weekend ticket booked. Let's hope no family events get in the way.

Let her know what YOU'LL be expecting when you get home and she's bound to shell out for you to stay in Weegeeville
My favourite trick to avoid getting shouted at when I come home pissed us not to ry and sneak in quietly but rather to be as loud as possible and sing "Love Machine" as loud as I can. Invariably when I get upstairs the missus is fast asleep and nothing seems to wake her.
Anyway its agreed. Cheap hotel here I come.

Me too. Me and my bruvva are coming to this. Drinking2. Our wives don't want us back when we go out together

There's a bar in the place isn't there? we could meet there...
Tips, Huff- any heads up on a cheapie place to stay in Weegieland would be much appreciated...
I found a backpackers hostel not too far away, I can book online and everything- only, there is no hint given as to cost and finding a phone number for the place is proving damned near impossible. Christ, how can cheap accommodation be so so bloody hard to pin down in this day and age? The collective information of the entire of human existence at our finger-tips. Except for viewers in Glasgow, where such things as 'contact details' and 'cost' seem to hold little meaning. No wonder the bus station is full o junkies and pissheads overnight!
What one are you looking at Dog?
There's the eurohostel in the city centre, which I used to live in when it was halls of residence and looks to be about £15.

By the way bigman, they know their audience:
Enjoy a bucket of 5 chilled Heineken (4.6% ABV) 330ml bottles in your room on arrival or collectable :o
That hostel's trip advior is a bit o a mixed bag. Still, sleep vs beer money? hmmmmm
I was looking at the Glasgow Backpackers Lodge, 50-60 Berkeley Street, just roond the corner fae the venue really. But I searched all day and couldn't get a price or a number though I was able to book a room online, which I find really odd!
Anyway- sorted oot- just went with another place just as close- The Charing Cross Guest House on Renfrew Street- £29, dearer than I hoped but still pretty reasonable, I just canna be arsed getting effed around trying to get the details of the other place. They only have a handful of rooms left so 'get-in-if-ye-want-in'.
Tickets booked, megabuses booked, room booked. I'll be on a mission for a Carlos sketch, if I bring a disguise maybe I'll get two.

What are the bars like in Glasgow? I like to have a drink or three, so would like to know where is best to meet fellow squaxx dek thargo, and not end up stabbed and robbed.
if its still at CCA then its basically on a very long road full of pubs. if you see me kickin about - girl wi curly brown hair and some kind of tooth memorabilia badge, t-shirt etc - come say hey and i'll give you the pub spiel :) x
Just don't go to any of the clubs, and you'll be fine. The Corinthian is a good example, looks all posh from outside, but in reality, it's a shithole. Hit the chain bars (TGI, Lloyds, etc) and you'll have no bother. The counting house off Georges Square isn't bad either, if you don't mind being bumped and pushed by suited yuppie twats. Personally I drink south side or west end, but if it's city centre? Go for Merchant City area but NOT TRONGATE!! They are close to each other geographically, but worlds apart in culture.
Nice n Sleazys is across the road and down a bit so might go there since its open til 3 and sells kinder eggs behind the bar x
Yep, decent pub, and the classic grand is near there too. Good if you like yer Rock tunes.
yeah david lloyd fell asleep in classic grand and they didnt throw him out so thats always a good sign lol. classics a night club so doesnt open til 11 x
I like a bar that stays open late and doesn't kick you out for nodding off a bit. I love rock music. If you see me there with my Bisley Abc warrior tshirt, come say hi. I don't bite (any more).
I will have to see what my visiting friends would like to do - tourists and all - but my vote will 100% be on nice and sleazys. My facebook is https://www.facebook.com/dawn.mathieson and im always keen to make new friends with similar interests and that is my main reason for using this forum. Please anyone in the tooth brigade glasvegas events division give me an add x
edit: i get fb on my phone so fairly immediate cept im not a great phone person as bit of a techno dunce
The Sir John is decent too.

Christ no. Dreadful shitholes. Within spitting distance of the CCA you have the CCA bar itself (pretty nice), The State Bar (proper old-fashioned pub), The Griffin (similar but bigger), The Variety (best pub in Glasgow), Nice 'n' Sleazy (shithole but open late, sometimes has decent music downstairs and my mates always want to go there however Stereo is a much better option for late night drinking), The Box (for young people who like proper bands playing proper tunes and, therefore, even worse than Sleazy's but also open late and has a far laxer door policy) and various others.
Some of the Bath Street places are bearable but most are full of the kind of tossers who wear figure hugging T-shirts with a saggy neckline.
Slightly further afield (up to half a mile's walk!) you have Black Sparrow, Bon Accord, Horseshoe, Stereo and all sorts of others.
Basically, just be sure to avoid Campus and Jumpin' Jaks and you should be fine.
So we're all agreed?
The Variety it is then?
I know nothing of any of these places, or any other places in Glasgow really so I have nothing of value to add to this debate.
To be honest, you're in more danger of being peeved by the youth of all the students than you are of being assaulted.

If you leave Central Station by the main exit, you will pass five Greggs emporiums en route to the CCA. Exit onto Union Street instead and you've bagged another without trying. Taking the relevantly insignificant detour onto Argyle Street will take your tally to seven and a further divagation onto Buchanan Street gets you up to nine, one of these latter only two doors down from Forbidden Planet. Of course, once you've gone that far, you'd be a full not to hit the one in George Square to get you into double figures.
Happy hunting.

I stand by my statement.
I am working Friday but can probably meet up for a swift pint or two on Friday evening. Then I'll be aff hame and returning to the Con early Saturday morning. I'm staying at a guest house just around the corner on Renfrew Street as well.
Once I have a sketch from Carlos, my main work is done so I'm pretty much game for anything.
Who volunteered to organise the high-class prostitutes and cocaine again?
Not me after that last time :-[

Cheers Cosh- I was in there once for exactly the same reason. It was terrible, I'd just been to a really good gig and there was some awful 'classic rock covers' band who took themselves oh so seriously. The cheese-monger singer had all the rock star moves & faces down pat- probably practiced in a mirror. Tragic end to a good night.
ah, that's the beauty of rock clubs, you can usually get in when you're too trollied to get past the bouncers at a posher club.
I'm still mourning the demise of Manchester's legendary Jilly's Rockworld, which was open for as long as I can remember, but is now a Tesco. I heard a man had to be dragged out by the police recently - he was kneeling in the checkout aisle around midnight, shaking his fists to the heavens yelling "ROCKWOOOORLD... WHERE ARE YOOOU! NOOOOOOOO!"
This time, one week.

back at yah, girl.
I have a family do on Friday night now but I can meet up for a couple of swift ones (say 1700ish) so long as I make the 1842 train. Happy to meet in the CCA bar if that suits.
And then obviously I'll be up and around Saturday and Sunday.
I'll be at the GLoW table (Level 1, Small Press & Creator Zone 1) so feel free to come over and shower me with alcoholic beverages (not literally. Although...) or just harass me and make me dance for pennies.

Yeah. Every fifteen minutes into town. Take about 20 minutes and it's a ten minute walk at most from the bus station to the CCA.
Sadly, it's looking like I am going to have to curtail the (excessive) bevvying on Saturday night as I'm supposed to be starting a new job on Monday and will have stuff to accomplish on Sunday.

Nonsense! A brisk walk out the back door and down Love Street takes you into the the lovely environs of Paisley. If you survive that you are a mere six mile walk into town.

Had a look at the con timetable I'll be around for a chat, sketch or signature in the CCA Glasgow clubroom Sat 12pm. And in the atrium cafe on Sunday at 3pm. Always good to meet boarders and put a human face onto postings so do come and say hi.
Seeing as I'm not at this con I thought why not ring one of the attendees up and have a chat about how it's going!
So last night, at about 03:00 I rang up the delightful Pete Wells and guess what, the bugger was only on his way back to the hotel for some sleep! To say I was shocked would be an understatement! Especially as he and Rod had only gone and picked up THE LEGENDARY SHARK for a bit of hotel room fun :o :o :o
Still, from what he was saying they were having a blast and I can't wait to see the sober report when they all return from this weekend of debauchery :-X
You're terrible.

It's the best bit of any convention! Yes it's Buttonman's Con Report.
BUTTONMAN'SCONREPORTBUTTONMAN'SCONREPORTBUTTONMAN'SCONREPORTBUTTONMAN'SCONREPORT
I arrived the CTA at around 12 noon. I hadn't been to the venue in years but knew I was in the right place when I spotted a bunch of nubile young cosplayers in a side street getting their photos taken. Twenty minutes later, and having washed myself down, I entered the venue.
Clearly I was far too smart as a lady approached me and asked what I was there for. Happily my PAID FOR ticket effected entry although I didn't get a goodie bag. This was no disaster as I saw one later and it was nothing worth having.
The place was mobbed and I looked around for some of the faces I knew. They managed to avoid me for a while but I eventually spotted Paul (Tips) in the queue for Carlos and John's table. We had a quick chat before I was snatched away by Stace and Iz who had toned down their hair colours to bright red and purple. We were soon joined by Sanaist (Mark) and Pete (The Cosh) who had sadly sold out to the man and got his hair cut for a new job with Barclays.
Sadly everyone was wanting to get a sketch and no one was gravitating towards the bar like me. My drink was removed further into the future when Pete Wells and Rob (Gronkguy) appeared having christened their hotel room. Sadly Pete didn't have a ticket and showed too much integrity to effect entry by reusing an untorn ticket - that would be dishonest.

Button, Wells, Iz, Shark,Stace. The group scattered for a while with luminaries such as Cam Kennedy, John Higgins and Alan Davis in attendance as well as Alan Grant, Gary Erskine, Gordon Rennie and Alex Roland. Pete, Rob and I went to Wetherspoons for a burger and a pint or two. John Wagner and Carlos sneaked in too. Pete demolished a massive haggis burger while the thrifty Rob had a plain burger and wanted his 1p change - well 200,000 of them make a Judge suit!
We reassembled for the Carlos talk and bumped into Tom (Proudhuff) DodeC and Bruce (Dog Deever). I say bumped into but it was more of a 'ha-ha losers' as the queue was stopped right at me as the venue was full (of idiots!). The organiser paniced when we told him his talk would be delayed as his guest was in the pub - off he ran! The talk was only 30 minutes and he did two so we got into the second one. It was good and Carlos got a few laughs with his easy charm. He was softly spoken however and you had to crane to listen - most of his anecdotes ended with 'as long as I got paid, I didn't mind'.
By now we had picked up Mark (Legendary Shark) , Judo and Judge Russell - surely the biggest forum gathering ever and one that must make the Souther softies cringe with embarrassment when it is compared to their 'phone box' offering.
Pete and Rob then invited me back to their hotel room as they had dressing up to do. Of course I accepted.
Oh the Humanity!Senior Judge Russell then bravely toured Sauchiehall Street on a Saturday afternoon dishing out justice and photo ops to all. He didn't enter the costume contest as bought gear is considered cheating but he did get a snap with a young hottie in a black tu-tu - Pete should have the snaps for that!
"I am your father"We the queued up for the 2000ad panel which had a full house. It was great fun with a brilliant panel and even a comedy German asking such questions as 'How do you make people care about your characters'. When they veered off topic he waved his arms and said 'Get back to zee question please'. There were some juicy titbits and slaggings but we were sworn to secrecy. It can be revealed that none of them read comics with 'Not interested' the main reason.

(Carlos off photo) Colin Macneil, Gordon Rennie, host, John Wagner, Alan GrantAfter that we milled about for a while and ended up at Wetherspoons the home of the £2.19 pint. I managed to catch up with most people and Shark generously handed out some of his amazing vectorised prints - surely a Future Shop item of the future? After getting drunk and stealing the coloured pencils we went to another bar I shamefully left at 11.50 as I had a train to get and a mountain to climb this morning.
It was a great day and the event was well organised with a stellar guest list. I was too shy to talk to John or Carlos but I stood near them which was plenty for me.
Great to meet some new people and to catch up with old friends - in Tom's case a
very old friend.
Hopefully do another soon and maybe their will be a battle to find the one true Judge!
I forgot to mention Richmond was there too in his usual sober attire - this time with added twigs in his beard as he slept in one of Glasgow's fine parks the night before! We've got enough dossers without importing them too!
Great post.
Would loved to have made it, but skint at the mo.

AH HA HA HA HA!
So, based on Wells calling Colin MacNeil "Happy Shrapnel" it seems like I must be The Mess. Lack of dinner last night ended up with me being ludicrously drunk and God bless Dog Deever for repeatedly stopping me from trying to batter Simon Bisley! Great to catch up with folk I already know and really nice to meet a bunch of lovely new people including (but not limited to) Rich, Bruce, Stacey, Iz, Mark the Shark, Pete Wells (can't believe I lost the Greggs bag I wanted him to autograph), Rob and Monty
I've not met a lot of comics professionals but if John Higgins and Sally Hurst aren't the nicest couple in the industry then it must be bloody lovely place to work. Hannah Berry was super lovely too, despite hating seagulls.
Nice sketch haul there Satanist. Particularly like the Ghost Rider and D.R. Sadly I wasn't up in time to get the Quinch half of the bargain. Only got these two myself but they're both great and, after having to queue four separate times for Carlos I'm not too bothered.

So here's the scandal-tastic Pete report:
PeteReportPeteReportPeteReportPeteReportBURDISISACOCKPeteReportPeteReportPeteReportPeteReport
My beloved Gronk Guy picked me up at 7am on Saturday. It was a lovely 3 hour drive to Glasgow, not bad timing considering we stopped in a few laybys for a bit of Gillian Tailforth action on the way. As expected, Glasgow is a sunny, idyllic paradise a bit like heaven. For example, on arrival we saw a lovely long-haired drunken girl sleeping peacefully in the park...
The hotel was very posh (4 star! I think Gronky was after something, the little minx...) and even included a famous high-street pasty emporium across the road, ensuring that I would get at least one of my five a day.

As I got to the con I noticed some of the less intelligent attendees didn't even have tickets, the twerps. Luckily, this wasn't me, no siree, honest guvnor. However, I did hear a report of a flagrant breach of health and safety law by what can only be described as a twat, who managed to secure Cosh's unripped ticket stub to blag their way in. Disgusting, imagine if there was a fire, or a stampede of excited young men running to snog Buttonman.
First port of call was to see Mr Wagner and Snr Ezquerra who were selling this beautiful Carlos print:

Whilst queuing I was vigorously fondled by the Whittle, the Iz and Buttonman who were all fighting for a bit of Wells action (which they all got.)
John Wagner was as wonderful as ever, greeting me by name (swoon!) and knocking a fiver off the price of his print - yay! He did the following sketch for me too, I really like his style, great line work and lovely characterisation. I reckon he could be a contender.

Next it was King Carlos' turn to be sycophantically cooed at and prodded. Following the pastygate debacle (See here: http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php/topic,38849.0.html (http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php/topic,38849.0.html)) I decided to educate the great man's palette by treating him to the finest of delicacies, the magnificent Greggs' Stakey Bake. As you can see, he was very impressed...

stalker, I mean fan...

Naturally I wanted a sketch from Carlos. I thought I'd get something a little different so I asked for a Judge Dredd one, he rose admirably to the challenge...

After worrying Carlos, I took time out to dangle this root vegetable in front of Iz in an attempt to rohypnotise her into letting me sleep with Bluemeanie. It didn't work, however, I was able to cop off with Stacey Whittle and make yet another fine bairn with her, so it wasn't a total loss.

It had been a good fifteen minutes since Buttonman had eaten so we went to a fancy restaurant called Wetherspoons for some lunch. I was a classy place with a beautifully ornate nutsack above the door.

Riiiiiip - We now interrupt this fascinating travel log to bring you a
'What Buttonman ate on his Holiday' photo. As you can see he had a Mexican Burger with Chips and a pint of the local pish.

Back to the action. I had a Highland Burger which consisted of horse and something called 'haggis' which I believe is sheep's snot, chicken udders, deep fried Mars Bar and pish. It came with chips like your mother used to take out of a bag and a little pot of shit. The meal was surprisingly tasty, especially the vomit and flatulence overtones one got when swallowing. Look - to be honest, the place was a bit of a shithole, they couldn't even afford plates and ended up serving the grub on old planks of wood - disgusting!

After my 'delicious' meal we went to the Carlos talk where the clever Andorran man managed to understand the Glaswegian accent much better than the dim-witted mackem man. He was great fun to listen to and the love he has for his job really came through. He talked about his 'messy' style and told us that he and Hector probably wouldn't be working together again they often disagreed about his son's cleaner inking style - interestin'.
Later I bumped into Cosh, Tips, Proudhuff, DodeC, Grandpa Deever, Alex Ronald, Judo, JudgeRussel and probably more lovely boarders. Of particular interest was Colin MacNeil's clone, the Legendary Shark, who gave me a beautiful vectorised print of the cover of Prog 168 as well as a wedgie and a couple of lovebites.
By now it was 'Judgement Time' so me and Buttonman went to help Gonkguy into his leathers; Hmmm, I can still taste the KY Jelly. Heading back to the con, we stopped for dessert at the local bakers, a lovely steak bake.

One pasty and cavity search later we were back at the con so Chief Judge Stewart could bully some punters. It was great fun, some inferior judges should take note. While Gronky was using his visor to stare at young cosplayers chests, I went to the 2000AD panel to watch five grumpy old men talk about their dislike of comics. It was a great laugh and really made me appreciate the younger guys who are carrying the comic today!
The evening was a drunken mess. Cosh's legs fell off, Iz made us do a sponsored walk, Colin MacNeil came dressed as Happy Shrapnel and one or two of us swapped STDs. One of the many highlights was when I chatted to Philip Bond for an hour. I tipped the wink to a very drunken Buttonman who immediately congratulated him on his excellent work in Time Flies. It was then that he told us his name was Philip Vaughn, awkward...
We went off to another pub where Simon Bisley may or may not have been an absolute cock - I couldn't possibly say. Good old Sharky sneaked into mine and Gronkguy's hotel room for the night where he was soothed to sleep by the gentle whooshing sound of sleep apnoea oxygen machines - bliss.
The next day it was brekkie with Richmond, Dode, Proud and Sharky before watching John Wagner's amazing talk 'Writing for Idiots' (did he mean me?) Other than all the sex, this was the highlight of the con for me - the master took us through his writing process before doing a commentary on one of his Dredd scripts (Slow Crime Day) panel by panel. It was fascinating and I genuinely hung on his every word, now I want a Wagner commentary for all Dredd scripts.
After tag teaming Iz and Whittle it was time to go home. It's nice to go away but it also nice to come home to be nagged, bullied and taken advantage of by the family. I shall say no more - as they say 'What happens in Glasgow stays in Glasgow' though I have found to my cost, that VD does not...

We went off to another pub where Simon Bisley may or may not have been an absolute cock - I couldn't possibly say ... before watching John Wagner's amazing talk 'Writing for Idiots' (did he mean me?)
All of the above convinces me I'm right not to bother with conventions, except the last bit which sounds brilliant. Thanks for going through that ordeal so I don't have to,
Pete.
So many highlights from this con. It was a brilliant location and really well organised.
Great to meet so many boarders in person. All top people. And talented too, it transpired.
Learnt so much from the panels. The Wagner writing lecture was fantastic. Hearing him breaking down a script, why each panel was there, what his thought process was in developing a story. It laid bare John's understated genius and I noted a couple of major things to apply to my own work.
Fascinating insights into the work of Carlos and Alan Davis too. Firstly the sheer fun they both have while drawing. They please themselves first, and their exuberance powerfully transmits onto the page as Thrill power personified. I'm always really thoughtful and methodical when I draw a comic page, and it looks much more boring as a result. A much bolder approach is in order.
Secondly the sheer serendipity involved in creating great work. Of course, it's the kind of luck you can only have if you happen to be a visionary artist - a major talent waiting to happen like Ezquerra, Davis, Wagner and Moore. Carlos got his first adventure strip by accident - it was meant for someone else. Then his Dredd designs were nothing like what John wanted, he just went with his instinct and took it in the seminal direction we're still enjoying today. Similar story with D.R. and Quinch, two of my favourite ever 2000ad characters. I asked Alan what he remembered from designing them. It was a revelation.
Firstly the approach to D.R and Quinch as written by Alan was gritty and realistic. Knowing Alan's views on violence in comics I can understand this. So Alan D got the gig for two reasons 1) He was the grim and gritty artist of Harry 20 on the High Rock, the go to guy for a realistic take on an outlandish situation 2) He was the only artist available who the editor thought could make sense of Alan's scripts. Apparently simply finding someone who could decipher and realise what Alan was writing was a major issue of consideration at this time. (As anecdotal evidence, I offer Carlos's revelation that he simply posted a script from Alan back to Tharg because he didn't want to deal with any of those verbose panel descriptions. I suspect it was Skizz, but there's no way of knowing for sure at this point. Carlos's view is that all the peripheral detail in a panel is his job. And why not).
So Alan D had already successfully decoded The Hyper Historic Headbang (another brilliant Future Shock) and was therefore to be trusted with Moore's vision. But when he read the script he couldn't see how it could possibly work in a realistic style. The events of 'Have Fun on Earth' are so outlandishly over the top that Davis decided it could only work with a much more cartoony approach. But the gritty requirement does explain some of that murky cross hatching you can see throughout the first Time Twister.
The characters as described by Moore were reptilian bikers! So again we have a great artist trusting his instincts and going way off piste as far as what was asked for in a character design. The brilliant humour and caricature so integral to the brilliance of D.R. and Quinch seems to be something Alan D developed in response to what he felt was needed to make the story work. The talent and versatility of the man! The alien designs he came up with are an amalgamation of his own artistic skills, Alan's notes, and various aliens floating through the popular culture of the time. The Skrulls were specifically mentioned in relation to D.R. - which you can see now he mentioned it - crossed with the biker quiff from Alan's description. The end result is something neither man fully intended, but which is utterly magical nonetheless. The rest, as they say, is history.
So churn out your best ideas, collaborate freely, and hope the comic gods smile upon the results. God knows how many other characters died on the vine in this collaborative melting pot. And so be it - it all sounds like great fun to me!
Add your own captions people! :D
Ah snut, that sounds like a class weekend, wish I'd been there.
Pete- you have to write up every con you visit like that. Now alan Whicker is gone, we need someone who can provide us with s taste of what really happened...
Great posts Gents - thanks for sharing.
That Philip Bond/Vaughn epsiode came screamimg back! All on the drunken Wells' watch - at least I knew some Philip Bond strips when the man said 'I'm Philip Vaughn' we had a collective 'Ooo's that then?'. So sorry Philip - I'm sure you are a great and worthy man and I apologise for my well meaning but idiotic friend.
Sure you didn't do that thing with the bloke with the whiskers and flying helmet?
My best bits of the con apart from catching up with the wonderful board folk are...
Meeting my childhood hero Cam Kennedy and having a natter while I waited for Alan Davis sketch.
Biz winding my kids up, have to say he was brilliant with them and up for a laugh.
Meeting John & Carlos and bagging a sketch - Priceless
Alan Davis asking where I got my paper from as his pencil wanted to have sex with it :o
John Higgins is indeed a lovely man who just really enjoys what he does the lucky bugger. I bought this sexy page off him. Mmmm...

The only real bum note was getting busted for drinking in a public place...

See you all in 5 when I'm out the cubes!
sounds like a great con, I'm jealous I wasn't there.
I just love the look of horror and bewilderment as Carlos examines the steak bake!

I don't believe that was Satanist family they were too lovely for the likes of him, he's obviously hired them for the day ;)
I right enjoyed that as well. met a few boarders that I hadn't met before - all lovely.
Highlights for me:
-Alan Davis just seemed a lovely bloke and his "getting To Know" session was great.
- Mike Ploog also came over well on the DC/Marvel panel - wish I'd queud for a sketch now
- Quality time with John and Carlos - we bumped into them in the street and took a flyer and asked them to come for a quick pint - and they did! Awesome way to finish a great weekend.
- Thanks to Legendary Shark for his vectorised prog cover.
- Watching Hannah Berry at work doing a gorgeous watercolour for the lass in front of me in the queue. Thanks to Cosh for putting me onto her
-Vampire Vixens - fantastic that it sold out - it's a very fun romp with a spectacularly funny money shot in the middle.
- Buttonman revealing that he has only ever had two shits in public toilets in his whole life.
- Fascinating to see the enthusiasm that the teens have for Fancy Dress (or cosplay if you must). The guy as Rorschach must have been melting inside
- Those cocktails seemed like a good idea at the time. I am not sure they were.
- Dode C - you make sure you do exactly what those two nice men told you to do immediately.
Apologies if I didn't single you out - genuinely everybody was great.

Can I just correct you there? It was two work toilets - never done one in a public lav. Eaugh! The very thought!
One was when I had a stomoch upset and the other before my second driving test.
I am not a wierdo.
I've had to break in to another hotel to write this and will have to type quietly to avoid waking the asthmatics.
What a fantastic weekend! Fun and japes with Colin "Happy" MacShrapnel; John Wagner giving me his notes from his talk on writing (swoon!); Simon Bisley giving me or not giving me the evils all night and me not knowing who he was or why he kept staring at me; presenting Iz and the Whittle with a ceremonial dangly carrot and not receiving a black eye for it (although my stones are still throbbing); spending an illicit night surrounded by Wells' and Gronk's disconcerting apparatus; being charged with the location and procurement of something called "A Hot Scotch Pie and Tattie Scones" for a personage of some considerable eminence; meeting George Coleman, the artist who 'popped my cherry', so to speak, in FutureQuake; discovering that the hairy thing covered in twigs and sleeping in the park was actually my editor (a pleasure to meet you, Rich!); sharing cigarettes on a sun-blistered kerbside with Colin MacNeil and Dog Deever (bloody lovely chaps both); managing (at last!) to restrain myself from going on about the bloody bankers and the knackered but easily fixable fiat currency system every five minutes (although I may have mentioned it here and there); getting a lovely sketch (with a lovely personal inscription) from Carlos; meeting all you lovely people and finding that absolutely none of you pose any kind of threat whatsoever and are what we in my village call 'gradely folk'; only just realising as I write this that the lass in the flowery dress and the purple boots was probably Judo (d'oh!) - belated hi!; getting drunk; sharing a big lump of breakfast grease with bits of meat, eggs and vegetables in it with Pete Wells, Gronk and Richmond Clements and then having George Coleman and the Cosh (who is a proper gentleman and makes me wish I had a forelock) turn up to help; (possibly) narrowly avoiding being picked up by two men with (possibly) nefarious designs on my fundament; being accused of enjoying illicit and inappropriate (not to mention highly improbable) relations of an intimate nature with David Cameron and being advised to return to the land whence I came by a beggar who, having not taken no for an answer, insisted on singing at me as I tried to sneak a cigarette outside a bar; being mistaken for Colin MacNeil; seeing Colin MacNeil being mistaken for me; chatting with Alan Grant and hiding the fact that I had no knowledge whatever of the topic under discussion (The Bogie Man); watching the panicked locals scatter before an assembled throng of hardy cosplayers as our nearest star tried its best to burn every living thing to a quivering, sweating, crisp (those guys really are heroes - they must have been roasting, which might explain the smell - but I'm told that was probably just the 27 local branches of Greggs); having such a great time with all the peeps I met that I missed just about everything and only discovered the presence of Alan Davis by reading the posts immediately prior to this one and, Grud, so many other cool moments!
And, the Moment of the Con for me... Watching Wells and Gronk run for it (well, shuffle faster) as the three of us emerged from a two-berth hotel room only to be accosted by a maid who regarded us with a suspicious eye. As they intrepidly bolted, like scalded snails carrying a sack of accordions, towards the lift I merely smiled my winning smile at the now helplessly enamoured maid and explained that I was only here to collect them (to take them back to The Centre). Of course, we got away with it.
All in all, a fantastic time shared with fantastic people.
Shark Rating: LEGENDARY!
Back under my rock now - until the next time!

There you go.
I did not attend, (might go next year), but my brother and cousin went along. Brother came back with this charming piece of work by Mr. Simon Bisley...

Apparently, Mr. Bisley had previously informed my cousin that he was wary of shaking his hand because he looked like a psychopath who craved human flesh. To be fair, he kinda' does have that look about him.
What a lovely weekend!
Fabulous Friday
Friday really was The Day of the weekend for me and I have to give big warm hugs to all the wonderful company that made it so - I couldn't have been happier to have so many kind hearted visitors to our 'fair' city of Glasgow. I love spending time with so many friends and that really is my highlight. Getting a shot of Colins hat is always a highlight too. The heat was scorching which seemed to make everyone very thirsty, my self included who some how managed a devastating 13 bottles of pear/cherry cider. The shout outs are endless here so I'll just say it was especially nice to meet russell, carlos, stacey and iz in person and I hope they and felt welcome during their visit.
This is the only photo i took all weekend so the rest are stolen from more on the ball people....
the amazing judge russell in colins legendary hat with the gorgeous hannah berry

Saturday of Chaos
Saturday was so scorching that even King Carlos the spaniard said it was too hot so score one scotland. Inside the con had an undeniable buzz circulating as the sold out venue throbbed with fans. Even the fact that it was allowed to be held in the Centre for Contemporary Arts is a great sign for comics as the previous two cons were literally fringe events held in a church outside the town centre and the CCA turned out to be a great new choice of venue.

I'm afraid i didn't get a single sketch but managed to get round a lot of really amazing people for an autograph and a chat. What a great con to have the divine John Wagner, Carlos Ezquerra, Colin Macneil, Alan Grant, Cam Kennedy, John Higgins, Alan Davis, Gary Erskine and James Devlin. Unfortunately I missed four time eisner winner Frank Quitely completely aww no sexy vinnie to admire but ha the 2000ad panel always comes first!

The 2000ad panel was great fun with Carlos, Colin, Grennie, Wagner, Alan and the legend Mcshane hosting. Mcshane made it very funny and paced well with classic banter. I particularly enjoyed Mcshane saying to Grennie 'I really enjoyed Armitage', Grennie replying 'I didn't write Armitage' and Mcshane fast as always with 'that's why I liked it'. hahahahaha Grennies face cheery as always. It was interesting hearing them talk about how they go about creating original characters through brainstorming and how they feel nervous about other writers and artists taking over their characters or taking over from others.

The cosplayers were as fun as always too and in abundance.

In the evening I headed along to the Scottish Independant Comic Awards where the very talented James Devlin picked up both best writer and best artist for Dark Ascension and Cam Kennedy was very rightly given the lifetime achievement award.

Sunny Sunday
Sunday was lovely and chilled out with lots of sitting around in the sun, chatting with friends and cider. John Wagner did a very interesting lecture on how to write comics which fully explained the Doherty script Slow Crime Day from inception to finish. He gave a lot of helpful advice about creating a story arc and working the characters personality through it to give the reader and emotional reacion. Top stuff from the best man in comics.

Afterwards a mighty piss up with friends that took us into the early hours capped the weekend perfectly. Absolutely fantastic.

and yes shark that was me wearing a dress and purple boots and sorry to you and any other fanclub members i didnt say hey to as i didnt know quite who was who and there was so many of you!
much love and hope that everyone has as great a time as me x x x
Y'know, I have spent literally thousands of nights sleeping in a bed and it goes unremarked... But you spend *one night* in a park..! ;-)

Class. You've really caught that Sex and the City vibe there!
I have no recollection of that photo being taken, but I do remember talking to hannah. She was very lovely. I also remember trying to match Bisley pint for pint. That did not end well. The whole of Saturday was a big throwy-up-nightmare.
I had to go back to my hotel twice to try and recover. I also queued for John Higgins for a while until I was next in line to have a sketch, but then had to run and be atomically sick.
But it could be worse. I could have spent a night in a park.
Thanks to everyone in Glasgow for a wonderful event. Gregg and Katy and evonne were amazing. But biggest shout out to dawn. Glasgow felt like a second home.

Full report after more sleep.
Glasgow rocked. So did all the boarders - bloody ace to meet Cosh, Tips, Proudhuff, The Legendary Shark, Dog Deever, Buttonman, satanist, Judo and new favourite Judge - Gronkguy. Ah balls, I know I've left someone off, too bloody tired!!
Anyhow, cool beans to see Richmond and the fragrant Wells again too....AND I managed to get a group shot early Saturday evening of nearly everyone :)

Few more to go up tomorrow :)

An absolutely brilliant weekend and that Pete Wells Con Report is quite probably the funniest thing I have ever read on this (often very funny) board. Comedy gold! Always great to put more faces to names (Legendary Shark, Montynero, Alex Ronald ). And finishing the weekend having a pint with the living legends John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra...!
Ah, I really miss you all.
Except the Weegies. And that Irish person. And those English freaks. And... Never mind.

judge russell you are very welcome and munching your sweeties right now to over come my post weekend blues!
I think this is the last photo i have been able to herd from the far corners of facebook and friends phones. The talented and charming spaniard Carlos Ezquerra who will always have friends in scotland and welcome back any time. I forgot to get a sketch but id have only got johnny alpha topless and hatless for stacey so sorry stacey! it was my intention! x

Judo - hahahh that would have been phwoartastic and no mistake! :-D Cheers for the thought my lovely.
I need to scan in my Johnny sketch to show you guys as the photo I have is a little bit rubbish, I'll attach it anyways though. Luckily the Wife -was on the ball and snapped a pic of Carlos sketching it for me which is lovely to have too!
Quotepossibly GordyM (?) between Rich and Dode
Nope, he's not a boarder. And AFAIK, doesn't do the message board thing at all, so shall remain mysteriously unnamed...
Hello
I am a bit of a newbie to the boards, looking at the everything comes back to 2000ad page I realised I was talking to Pete Wells and Rob Stewart in the Wagner/Carlos que. Rob very kindly gave me a sheet of paper from his sketchpad so I could get a sketch off king Carlos. :D John Wagner seemed a very nice , down to earth bloke as did Carlos. I spent two blistering hot hours in a que to meet Simon Bisley he was a bit stand offish at first but had a good chat with him. Spent my money on a Dredd/Alpha print and a selection of american Dredd reprints which are like gold dust in the North East.
A narrow escape there Judge Nutmeg - you must have been a heartbeat away from The Cosh borrowing a tenner off you and me telling you about my appearance on 'Weakest Link'!
Hurrah another north Easter! Hello!
Yay, Judge Nutmeg as a canny fella and no mistake!
I'm claiming the Colin MacNeil/Happy Shrapnel gag gag, thought it as soon as I clapped my peepers on him!
Ha ha button man I think your stories of weakest link may have taken the edge off a blistering hot day. I was concerned why Mr Wells gave Carlos a pastie at the time thinking it may have been some kind a cultural exchange . Did you guys end up getting a sketch off Bisley? Hello Stacey always a pleasure to meet another North East Geek. Going start contributing more to the forum to keep the thrill suckers at bay. Good to meet some fellow Dredd heads need to get myself to more conventions.
Hey everyone
Great Event and plenty 2000AD stuff to get my fix and John and Carlos are two very friendly guys
Well worth the journey south
Had a great time at the Con (when I wasn't melting) and my Ezquerra sketch of Dredd is now proudly hanging on my living room wall (along with a f'ing amazing Rorsach drawing by John Higgins).
Sorry I didn't make it to the post-Con meet-up. I was incredibly drunk on Saturday and just sort of followed in the wake of some friends I was with. Still, they led me to a pub where the lovely Stace and Colin McNeil were hanging out so I'll forgive them this time.
Personal highlight for me was my friend Neil (the Slorance meister of Astronomer's Journal fame) being even drunker than me and deciding he was not leaving until he knew the name of every single person in the pub.
