Title: Comics You Collect?
Post by: Little_Tengu on 04 February, 2013, 11:30:06 AM
So aside from 2000 AD and The Megazine, what series does everyone here collect?

Rather partial to Silver Age Green Lantern, The Maxx, The Tick, and Howard The Duck myself

I have, or more accurately, had loads. I'm hoping I've now kicked to habit of getting titles 'cos I collect them and now just get stuff 'cos I like it and will read it again.

In the past I had all Flash comics from something like 1978 on (and a lot before that reprinted in one form or another) but I've sold some of that off now. Still have all the Wally West series. I've almost got every comic that starred Ka-Zar, or in which he's been the lead in a story in the case of anthologies. Again though that's on its way out quite possibly.

I've got pretty much all of Jack Kirby's 70's material in one form or another, some of the more obscure, lesser known series being the exception. Though DC seem to be getting around to those as well.

That aside I have significant runs of Daredevil, The Avengers (sold all my Bendis stuff there though finally), The Spirit and Spider-man (almost all reprint though, bless the Essentials for making that possible). I've also got loads of complete runs of series that haven't lasted that long, or on the ongoing series, by creators I like. So for example I have all of Zot!, Flaming Carrot and all of say Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle's Batman stuff.

At its peak my collection was around 12,900 stories (about 9500 of those original comics, the rest reprinted)  its down to about 10,000 now (about 6,500 original comics). So while I'm still buying loads I'm glad to report I'm selling off more than I'm buying now.

I collect the IDW Dredd, Jericho and a guilty pleasure of Supernatural, which is crap but I need to see if they'll put any interesting stuff into the stories that relates to the TV series.

I've trimmed my pull list down to the bare bones over the past year. At this moment in time;

I'm also getting the 'Before Watchmen' stuff, but its almost at an end.

I've not read any yet (I'm dying to but I'm waiting for the hardcovers to land) but the reviews have been largley positive, which a big relief. DC chose well for the creative teams.

My current pull list is in my signature, it changes often though.

Hardly anything these days. It seems all the comics I like come out sporadically if at all. I get-

The Walking Dead (may go back to just getting the collected ones though)
Love And Rockets (Fatima by Gilbert at the mo)
Deadworld (nothing at the minute)
Anything by Richard Corben
Flaming Carrot (whenever something drops).

Mostly just GN's or collections of old stuff these days. I'd be buggered without the meg or prog.

Should also add smallpress stuff such as Zarjaz, Futurequake etc.

To give a hysteria free answer; its generally good.
Some of it is excellent (Minutemen & Silk Spectre), some good enough (Dr. Manhattan), and some just ok (Rorschach & Nite Owl).
To my disappointment, there doesn't seem to be an over-arching sub-plot, and the back-up Pirate strip by John Higgins seems to be completely superfluous (but enjoyable).

I've heard that DC are going to put together collections based on the writers input.
To that end, I'd strongly recommend the Darwyn Cooke collection to any comic reader, regardless of their position on the concept of Before Watchmen.

Cool, good job the first volume is Minutemen/Silk Spectre (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Before-Watchmen-Minutemen-Silk-Spectre/dp/1401238920/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1359984071&sr=8-11) then! I re-read Watchmen again just the other week and reminded me how much I would love a book of the Pirate comic!. I'm keeping an eye on the Before Watchmen books hoping Amazon slash the prices as they seem to be doing of late with their graphic novels.

I wouldnt be surprised if that Minutemen / Silk Spectre collection will be the only one most people pick up, as I cant see the other collections getting anywhere near as good reviews.

Some really nice sub-plots in Minutemen, particularly if anyone was wondering just what did happen Hooded Justice...

I collect Walking Dead through the trades, I know a few other peeps that do too so it's always good to talk about the ending of the latest volume.. the last half dozen have been killer endings. Roll on volume 18.

I collect IDW's rebooted TMNT series via TPB too, highly recommended.

Went through a bit of a UK comic collecting phase not so long ago and picked up a full run of Warrior and Starlord, with that hard to find summer special.

Of the newer stuff:

Full run of Preacher (with specials)
Full run of The Boys
All the Ennis run of Punisher and beyond (stopped at the Rucka stuff, because it was more superhero like and a bit cack).

Even newer stuff:

Jennifer Blood
Saga
Judge Dredd IDW
Star Wars (new Dark Horse series)
The Massive
Dial H
Fury

Any Toxic! or Crisis or is that on your "to do list"?

Yeah LT thought about Crisis and Revolver but I'm seriously lacking in the funds department at the moment so may have to put that idea on the back burner, also unsure of the over all quality of those two comics to warrant collecting.

Don't really know if this thread applies to just singles comics or collected trades. To be honest except for 2000AD i gave up on single issues a while ago, too time consuming and expensive. Better off getting the trades as they cost a lot less then the single issues. Anyway, i love collecting tbp's and hardcovers, last series i finished was Y...

The hardcovers are really great, oversized which helps to bring Pia Guerra's artwork alive. I'm also halfway through collecting all the Punisher Max series, i gotta agree with dweezil2, i just couldn't get into Greg Rucka's stuff too. Ennis is by far the best writer the series has had.

Hellboy, BPRD and all related titles
Baltimore
Saga
Conan The Barbarian
The Massive
American Vampire (though it's just gone on hiatus)
The new Brian Wood Star Wars
Fatale
Manhattan Projects
Lot 13
Black Beetle
Dark Horse Presents

Think that's it.

I got the first two TPB's of Hellboy and I love Mignola's art but the actual stories didn't do much for me, does the series get better or are those two a good example of the writing? Every volume seems to have glowing reviews so I've been a bit hesitant to pick any more up.

Since The Boys finished I'm not buying anything other than 2000AD. Debating whether to keep going with Unwritten in trades and there's a couple of things like Prophet and The Massive which I'm considering giving a go the same way.

Yes it does mate! I too felt a little underwhelmed with the first two trades, but Mignola's artwork is just beautiful to behold. However, once you start getting into the next volumes starting from The Chained Coffin storyline the stories start matching the art. One of my favourite volumes is Vol 10: The Crooked Man. Its one of the best stories i have encountered in a long time, not only is it bloody scary but Richard Corben's artwork is magnificent. My advice is don't stop - carry on with the series, you won't be disappointed!

Action Comics – Just cos its Morrison
Walking Dead – Better be some zombies soon as its on thin ice with its
Governer V2.0
story
Crossed – Ennis is back on this issue 25. Its been hit or miss so far, more miss TBH.

Theres not a lot floating my boat at the mo really.

Toothy and the Meg, naturaly.
Weekly Shonen Jump and Jump Squared- MANga! See what I did there? Fuck it. I sometimes pick up the Yen press package that includes Soul Eater and Black Butler, but I buy them collected mostly. Also the occational Shojo Beat.
IDW's Doctor Who series- Hit or miss tbh. It's good fun mind.
Not alot from either DC or Marvel of interest tbh.

Whoops I took the aim of this thread to be back issue type stuff you collected. My regular pulls are at the minute.

From DC:

Action Comics (I really enjoy it The Cosh, not Morrison's best, but like most of his work I'll read again when his runs complete and re-evaluate, often does it the world of good) finishing with issue 18 I believe it is now. Not fussed about the Andy Diggle run.
Animal Man
Swamp Thing (might give the new fella a go, not sure yet)
Bat Wing (might not last long)
Earth 2 (hhhmmm running out of steam a little?)
Batman
Batman Inc. (I think up to 12 is it, we'll see who takes over after Mr Morrison)
Wonder Woman
All Star Western
Red Lanterns in trade

Marvel:

FF
Daredevil in trade

Others:

Mud Man (back at last YAH!)
The Massive
IT Girl and the Atomics
Nowhere Men
Fatale
Li'l Depressed Boy
Planet of the Apes: Cataclysm You need to all buy this as it looks like it might be for the chop as sales are low and its bloody fantastic.

Get Battlefield and Rocketeer mini's when they appear and I'm going to have a look at East of West, Sex and Uber to see how they are. Oh and Liberty Meadows but to call that ongoing seems too naively hopeful even by my standards!

Not pulling too much new stuff at the moment.
2000ad and the Meg, Batman (until the end of current joker storyline) and Evil Ernie,
But I'm always trying to finish off some of my bigger collections such as:

Dark Horse Aliens and Predator comics.
Any and all Chaos comics (ah how I miss this company)
Pretty much any Clive Barker comics (especially the Epic Hellraiser stuff)
And a stack of other indie comics.

Not really feeling the marvel and dc superhero comics as much anymore, to the extent that I'm looking to off load most of em soon.

I used to be the same...til I realised that doesn't necessarily mean it'll be a good comic.
Gave 'Action Comics' 3 issues...I genuinely thought it was mediocre at best, and nowhere near as good as his 'All Star Superman' run.
Still digging his 'Batman Inc' though.

My favourite volumes of Hellboy are the Fegredo-drawn ones - Darkness Calls, The Wild Hunt and The Storm & The Fury are, for me, where it all begins to cohere into a really solid and dramatic tale, shot through with all the best bits of British folklore. Now that Mignola is back on art duties I really miss Fegredo! (Heresy I know).

Its alright, as said above not a patch on "Allstar" but enjoyable enough. I'd actually bought over 12 issues before I started reading it so just recently read it as a straight run through. Alternate world Superman issue was my fave. I'll prob knock it on the head once Morrisons run ends though.

Basically i collect stuff from here and there... every single Motofumi Kobayashi manga that's been released here. As of this moment, i got everything.

I also collect Secret Warriors from Marvel. I have vols. 1 to 4, the 5th on its way and i just bought the 6th and last. And today i got the spanish edition of the Siege Battlefield TPB, wich includes a SW special too.

I collect Atomic Robo, and now stuff from 2000ad. Apart from Dredd's CCF 1 to 5, today i bought the 6th one, and the first Tales of Nu Earth, and both The Backlash and Origins Dredd collections. And i ordered the first Mega-City Masters from Amazon.com, but i doubt they ever send it(it's in state 1 to 2 months :o ).

I have a lot of comics, but i don't collect too much stuff these days. Basically it would the the aforementioned series, plus perhaps Saga, Prophet, Invincible Iron Man(Larroca+Fraction), Iron Man 2.0, and a little few more titles.
