Title: Tour of Duty vol. 2 help
Post by: willthemightyW on 10 February, 2013, 11:20:00 AM
Hope this is the right place to post this (I think some one may have posted it before, but I looked and couldn't find it) but why is Tour of Duty Mega-City justice so expensive everywhere?! I'm guessing it's out of print, but it went out of print quite quickly, and now I can't find it for a reasonable price. Hoping I'll happen across it in Waterstones or my LCS one day. Any word on when this will be re-printed?

Thanks, Will

Oh yes, this happens reasonably frequently. I guess Rebellion are terrified of having stacks of unwanted trade collections cluttering up their office so they err on the side of selling out in 4 minutes instead.

Remember that a lot of stock of Rebellion's first wave of trade paperbacks - even premium stuff like The Chief Judge's Man - ended up in remainder bargain bookshops. My guess is that they switched to lower print runs to combat this.

I'd imagine it will get a reprint at some point, or perhaps a digital release (I know Rebellion are ramping up their digital trade collections in the futute).

I find the best way is to just pre-order all the books you want ahead of time to guarantee getting yourself a copy!

Looking at the apparent success of that combined Dredd bluray and download copy bundle, it strikes me that a similar deal with the trades wouldn't be a terrible idea. You buy the book off Amazon and get a digital copy to read right away, and a promise you'll receive a print copy to sit on your shelf when there are enough orders to justify another print run.

I've got my copy of Fourth Faction on order, but I came into Day of Chaos in media res and I ended up resorting to nefarious means to get my hands on the issues I'd missed to make sense of the issues I already owned legitimately. I've been recommending Dredd collections to prospective new readers online for months, providing a link to buy them from Amazon, then clocking a price of $80 - $250 dollars for books that cost me around a tenner.

The effects of the scarce nature of some of these trades is worse here in the United States. The CFs aren't too hard to find, but I was lucky to even find Mega-City Justice here, much less from a seller in the states for a price that wasn't ridiculous.

Does anyone know if Vol 1 is still in print? Made the error of picking up Vol 2 before Vol 1 by mistake, so I'm looking to get Vol 1 around March/April time.

I've seen it come up in some places (more than vol 2 for some reason), but bouncing around $30 usd/ 20 GPB.

I dunno if it's correct to put this question here, but... since Tour Of Duty is out of the line, but The Backlash is available... i will get it in a few days or so. The Backlash tome ends in a cliffhanger, or is a self-contained story?. It would be a pain in the ass to devour TOD1 and then not being able to continue with vol.2.

Nah, I'd go ahead and buy it. Tour of Duty is probably the least self contained of all the Dredd collections currently available, which makes reading just one part of it no more frustrating than jumping on at a particular prog. Even though the over-arching narrative introduces a new protagonist and creates a situation, and both reach some kind of resolution by the second book's end, it's really a few years worth of Wagner's work on the strip collected under a subject heading.

That's genius as far as I'm concerned, because the shorter 3-6 part Dredd stories and the way they build over time into a larger story is where the real joy of Wagner's work lie as far as I'm concerned.

If it was only the second book which was available I'd tell you the same thing - no story in Wagner's canon is ever completely discrete, they always have consequences for future stories and make you go back and read former tales in a slightly different light. Tour of Duty is all the better for its open-ended structure and allusive nature, and either one of the two books would make my all-time top three of Dredd collections.

Oh, no... :'(

I forgot about this thread until too late... Four days ago, from "nowhere", 5 copies of the Tour of Duty vol.2 appeared to adquire on Amazon. I bought mine through Amazon.es, but seems to be that was the last copy. I dunno from where they came from, but it's the deal, i've just got it today.

If i remenbered this thread before, i could warn everyone interested, but people, they flew in seconds!. :(
