Title: Thought Bubble 2013 - 17th - 24th November 2013
Post by: Dodsy on 19 February, 2013, 08:42:24 PM
It's starting again. The festivals website and Facebook page has had it's first update of 2013. Tickets, table prices, etc haven't been announced yet but the con itself is on the 23rd & 24th Nov. Also the first load of guests have also be announced, they are:

- Rafael Alburquerque (American Vampire);
- Gabriel Bá (Daytripper, Casanova);
- Andy Belanger (Swamp Thing, Black Church);
- Becky Cloonan (Batman, Wolves, The Mire);
- Ming Doyle (Mara, Jennifer's Body)
- Fábio Moon (Casanova, Daytripper);
- Sean Gordon Murphy (Punk Rock Jesus);
- Ramón Pérez (Wolverine & The X-Men);
- Emma Rios (Captain Marvel, Pretty Deadly);
- Annie Wu (Hawkeye, The Venture Bros)

Not exactly 2000AD related just yet but sure plenty of past and current droids will be there. What's everyone think of the first load of guests?

Tell him to draw his own comic and sell it - that's more the spirit o' TB!

The minute tables are up I'm booking the hell out of it - it's the best convention IN THE UNIVERSE!

I know... He was surprised when I told him not many tables do what he intends....

I think he must have thought I kept inviting him to a huge Comic Mart. I think he will be blown over by the talent on show.

Creative types.

If you send me a pdf of your work I will gladly review it for you. I prefer reading from a paper copy, obviously not asking for free paper copies, they cost you all too much for that. But I am now more comfortable with kindle than I was.

Need to dig out last year's TB purchases because I haven't reviewed all those yet.

I will obviously not share any pdfs sent to me.

If I get enough as well as putting them on my blog I might print out a review booklet to distribute at TB

That is a great list of new wave art-punk talent.  I wonder if it was deliberate to get so many non-superhero artists at the show?

Its a good job I had the day off on Monday otherwise I wouldn't have been able to book a table. Selling out 300 tables in 3 hours is crazy!

See you all in November!

More guests added and a couple of interesting things to note. Firstly as The Beat notes (http://comicsbeat.com/thought-bubble-2013s-guest-line-up-so-far-10-girls-11-guys/ (http://comicsbeat.com/thought-bubble-2013s-guest-line-up-so-far-10-girls-11-guys/)) the ratio of male to female guests to date is almost 1:1, which is incredibly positive progress.

Second Francesco Francavilla - YAH!

A nice little line-up so far and it's only just starting!
Really happy to see Francesco Francavilla added. I've got Detectice Comics #871 signed by both Scott Snyder and jock, just need him to complet the trinity. Plus a sketch for the sketch book would be great as well.

OK need a little help here. Can anyone suggest any cheap hotels with free parking near Thought Bubble?

We usually stay with friends but that isn't an option this year so were looking to get something booked sharpish.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Dodsy, the holiday in Express is next door to the gig, and the car park on the other side of the venue does a full weekend parking ticket for £15.

Last year's was great so I'm booking up again. It'll be easier to get around too this year thanks to no insanely massive queue for Charlie Adlard (people were queing up to join the capped 'official' queue - queing to queue!).

I was at Thoughtbubble last year and was waiting in the relatively small queue for John McCrea ( another of my favourite artists ).....
When John arrived he thought that hardly anyone was waiting for him, as the queue for Charlie Adlard was absolutely massive.....
He was most pleasantly surprised when about 20 folk said they were all waiting for him.....He said " Are you sure you're in the right queue ??"....
An absolutely great bloke, very friendly and extremely 'chatty' and shared a few tales about himself and Garth Ennis....I ended up with a signed copy of the Hitman compendium,  and a fabulous sketch of Butcher from The Boys with Terror,  which only cost me £20....
Brilliant !!....and will definitely be going this year if I can 'mooch' a room at my brothers' house.... :D

His house is up for sale at the moment, so I'm hoping that once he starts 'packing', he'll find the remaining artwork...

But really excited to see how conventions benefit the small press (no doub't i'll come back staggering with comics and memorabilia!).

This years con is shaping it rather nice. Really going to have to get that ticket/ hotel booked.

And I'll be there again this year forcing ya to draw Buck Tucker again after a few (or more) pints. I felt a bit rushed last year after stopping to talk to most tables so it'll be 2 days this time round.

I think you need to print out your conformation e-mail and exchange it for a wristband on the day of the con. Sure that's what we did last year, can't remember getting a physical ticket at any point.

Yup, that was the drill last year. Just bring your order email and you're in.
If you get there before opening there are two queues. One for prepaid wristbands and the other were peeps waiting to buy on the day tickets. The volunteer stewards had things pretty well organised and once the doors opened we got in very quickly.

Talked one chap in to attending last year, he took his son.

This year as well as my mate with whom I am sharing a table I have talked 4 more in to attending. Plus the original Chap n his son are going again. So plus 7 due to me. The more that go the more it can grow.

I ought to be on commission.

Only con I will have done this year. I only started in 2011. First time with a table...

My first time last year, just turn up and talk to people. You'll have a great time I promise. My only problem was not knowing who folk were. I was waffling to someone behind the Image table about how great Prophet is and it turned out to be Giannis Milogiannis.

Really looking forward to meeting fellow boarders and buying some of your fruits of love. El Bigote and PJoaTT really get my interest. Add Zarjaz to that and im sure it will all be money well spent.

After being stuck behind a table most of last year's event it's going to be a relief just to be walking the floor this year. Wonder who's going to replace Charlie Adlard as this year's recipient of the 'Christ Almighty How Many F*****s Are In That Queue?!?!' award?

My Anthology Mag arrived today and the Dredd/Elephantman strip is brilliant. As always with Boo, stunning art, plus a witty script by Richard Starkings. The only niggle I have, it should fill the mag, as I want to see more ;)

One last thing, well done on the homage that will bring a smile to all the Dredd fans :thumbsup:

Only a week to go, people. As well as the awesome stuff above I will also have copies of El Bigote for sale for a mere £2.00 a copy (and a total shame that ElChivo can't make it, wanted to get me a sketch of the undead quillslinger!)

As well as a very limited number of copies of the Ketsueki GN that His Lordship RAC wrote (Those little beauties are going for a mere £5.00 each)

An ever shifting house move has now landed on Wednesday... It'll be apps to retain my pass for this now, I might still try but I'm not holding out too much hope. So disappointed, well clearly finally moving house is compensation! Have been really looking forward to the host of fun and catching up with a few of you fine folk... Still lets see where we are Thursday and live in hope I can fit it all in... You never know...

I might nit be able to make it after all. A change in schedule has brought my aunts wedding a week forward, and its on the 23rd. This is awfully late notice for me as i've shelled out money for a suit for the wedding and saved for TB. I dunno what to do. :-\

Wow harsh that so many can't make it now. Hope all turns out for you Richmond.

On the other hand I have my pass confirmed still. I'll be leaving it until the last moment (well Thursday) to make sure the house is in order(ish) before making a decision but my wife is cool with it. In fact after the various bits of hassle of the last few weeks she's good. The in-laws are coming to see the house, was that the end of my hopes. nope they're cover for my absence.

I'm a lucky man!

NOOoooooo! Who's going to be in charge of Shouting and Belligerence? Who's going to wear the white suit? Who's going to dance with me?

Anyway, an update from Uncle Fester and I. We've both been a bit quiet on the ole Forum lately - sorry - pressures and deadlines, pressures and deadlines. The upshot of those, however, is that we'll have new comics for sale at the Disconnected Press table (New Dock Hall, left hand wall, table 7) including:

- Do Aliens Play Basketball? - written by me, this comic explores the mysteries of space and science and will make grown men cry. Good for fans of Prof Brian Cox. General lack of violence, although it does feature the end of the universe....

- Sentient Zombie Space Pigs. No description needed. Art by Uncle Fester. Words by me. Only costs £1. How could you resist! (Not technically new at TB, but worth mentioning because we love it!)

- Disconnected anthologies - still a few copies of 2 and lots of our new vol 3 for sale. Weird and wonderful stories set in small towns. Lush. Vol 3 features cover art by occasional Forumite Kev Levell.

It's also launch weekend for Pirates of the Lost World - technically available from the Markosia table, just along from us, this is Uncle Fester's second graphic novel and is neatly summed up thus: Pirates Versus Dinosaurs.

Come and find us - think of us as your second home after the Zarjaz table...

Lizzie

I'm off to Doctor Who at the Vue in Kirkstall at 21:00. If anyone wants to go and can get a ticket I will most gladly be local guide and get you there. I'm having pizza with a mate near the Armouries before going and will be setting off from the Bus Station (not sure exactly what time yet).

I'll be at Table 1 (that table is under the name of Tower Games) in Allied London Hall, or if not there you can certainly get messages to me. I'll be dressed in Chanmail wearing a silver demon mask... There will be a NYPD Detective at the table most of the time & a chap not in cosplay they'll be able to get hold of me if I'mnot around. You might also find a couple of pirates at our table... though they ought to be mingling...

Sorry about double posting...

I've just published a Reviews Booklet of some of the items that you should find at Thought Bubble. Works by several of the Forum's members are included in the document. It includes details of where to find everything I review by table number & Hall.

You can download it from this article. http://judgetutorsemple.wordpress.com/2013/11/21/thought-bubble-comic-convention-royal-armouries-leeds-23rd-24th-november/

I will have some with me but feel free to download the booklet, feel free to share it around.

If anyone finds out someone came to your table with a copy of the booklet in hand I'd be delighted to hear!

Ah Burdis we'll miss your head-cracking ways at TB this year - !

Got in around nine, had a little time to socialise with Dunk & Ghastly McNasty and did a bit of droidspotting at the Marriott. Although tiredness and poverty took over and me and Geoffery absconded back to the Ibis budget fairly sharpish. We're in a corridor full of comic folk so all was quite civilised and the normal "orc horde in Moria" hotel corridor gabble that normally wakes you up at three didn't occur. Up dead early for set-up and brek -

The con is much expanded this year with a new hall and a newly (?specially) built Thought Bubble cafe/bar next to the New Dock. Pretty smashing really - update later with occurrences but it promises to be quite the thing.

There can of course be no doubt who the nicest folk on the Internet are, and thats the good people of our own forum.  Had so many great chats with so many good board members.  A delight all round and thats not just the beer (though why you can't get a dark rum for love nor money around the con escapes me) talking... love you all man... no really... no I mean it... was Doctor Who any good?

I've just left the Hondo Judge in the bar at the Premier Inn at the NEC. Yes folks, he's over here for tomorrow, so if you missed him, you won't see him again this weekend in Leeds.

Great Thought Bubble for me!

Sadly not many photos taken, though I got more than I usually do... (I usually get none). Pathetically I forgot to ask anyone to take a group shot of my group... :(

I got some nice comments about my Judge-Tutor Semple Reviews Booklet. I also got quite a few signatures on one of the Reviews Booklets and will be giving it away in a COMPETITION soon on Judge-Tutor Semple Blog.

I got direct feed back from someone who read, and loved, one of my mini-books I was giving away (The Rift Origins 1 The Monk General) he has the other three but hadn't read them yet & wanted to know if he had the full set. All four mini-books certainly seemed to be picked up well enough... whether they get read or not who knows.

I also met some great folks, new faces and old.

Already looking forward to next year (hopefully Exhibiting) & hoping to add at least another Con (maybe just as a punter - but handing out free stuff)

Didn't get quite as many sketches this year but still some nice ones, all be it in a new book as my Book of Tharg was still languishing in a box somewhere post move.

The brilliant Simon Davis did a wonderful Sinister to keep last years Dexter company

Jeff Stokely... well there was only one option for me really

and the ever superb Henry Flint.

Iron Graham, were you the lad with his nan? Ha! Awesome, I didn't realise you were a boarder too!

Lovely to meet you over the weekend, along with those that came along to the Zarjaz/FQP table. We had a very good weekend, and the Sat night Chinese was as good as it ever gets, especially given the standard of the company doing the eating.

Another awesome Con at the Bubble. Nice to see Dave at the Zarjaz table again (it's becoming part of my regular Leeds convention routine).

Bought lots of Massimo related TPB's from the 2000ad stand to support the cause (keep up the good work people).     :D

Yeah, lovely chatting to you peeps and sorry I missed a few of you too. It's always the way.  Picked up Something Wicked and Drokk (the Savage Zenith story is excellent in every department), and bagged a couple of Becky Cloonan comics too. Had a great time on Saturday night at the Corn Exchange and the Marriott. Really enjoyable weekend!

came home with bagful of goodies, but neglected to pick up Drokk with all my other Zarjaz stuff. Good to say hello to some boarders as always (and for the first time recognised someone from their profile pic - hi Minty - great costume!). Thoughts on my purchases once I've digested 'em

It was fun to bring along a friend who isn't a comic reader but really wanted to check out a con - she had a great time and bought almost as much as me. Sadly, we couldn't stick around for the booze-up afterwards, but got home to in time watch Dr Who.

I thought the costumes weren't as impressive as last year - maybe they were all in brum. Very poor showing from Justice Dept - apart from the Hondo judge (who I missed), the closest I saw was a guy in a smart suit, black stocking mask and judge helmet (Judge Blankface joins the wally squad?)

I've seen a pic of at least 3 2012 judges plus the Hondo-cit Judges at TB.

People cosplaying do it at their own time and expense, with 2 conventions on the same weekend organising an even spread of people is not easy, and there are a lot of conventions.

Off the top of my head, JB alone has done in the past year -

LSCC, LFCC (Summer), LFFCC (Winter), Sci-fi London Film Festival, MCM Expo Birmingham, MCM London, Eurogamer + assorted smaller events.

plus all the other stuff Judges Pal, Lemmy, Court, Anderson and the rest have done.

So to moan about them not putting in the hours in, is quite frankly a bit much.

No worries - I'm a bit burnt out by conventions (and other stuff) at the moment, so not in the best of moods.

I just take the photos, so I can only imagine the amount of work these guys put into doing this, and I just want to see them getting some recognition for it.

Attended Thought Bubble for the first time, bit of a long jog up from Cornwall, but well worth it. I missed the Hondo judge, but did see the guy in the suit with the helmet. High points of the weekend was tagging along with John Higgins and friends for Nandos, and Simon Davis painting me a superb Missionary Man sketch. Now trying to work out where to keep the pile of graphic novels I picked up, and justify the excessive amount of cash I went through. Would recommend Vampire Vixens and Pirates of the Lost World, if anyone hasn't tried either, do it asap.

Well I had a blast (though my wallet and liver may disagree)

Met loads of lovely boarders & comic pros + Pete (bastard) Wells and had a grand old time.

I know it sounds so twee to say but such a friendly bunch of folks, and all up for a laugh.

Many geeky fanboy moments I won't go into and a grand old haul of (strangely predominately pirate) comics to digest.

Cheers to those who were there and made it the time it was.

Same place next year folks.

Dunk!

That was my first time in Leeds and at Thought Bubble. Absolutely loved it.
The only down side was seeing folks very briefly and not getting more time to talk. If I get along next year it'll be as a punter so hopefully I'll get more time to socialise. Pleasure meeting Rich McAuliffe, Pete Doherty, Simon Davis and one of my current favourite Dredd artists, Ben Willsher.

Big thanks to all boarders who came by the table and bought the book. Much appreciated.

Had a great time yet again despite how busy the place was early Saturday. Didn't see half as many boarders as I'd have liked but did manage to grab a ton of books and sketches:

(These are just from the Saturday, more was bought of Sunday lol)

Some of the sketches I got as well:

By Simon Davis

By Henry Flint

By Jon Davis-Hunt

Not strictly 2000AD but a great steam-punk Zatanna by Boo Cook for the wife.

And lastly, my collection of signed Dredd playing cards is coming along nicely

I bought Porcelain form my LCS based on the free taster they were giving out at last year's TB, and it was a glorious little book. At the time I thought this was rather expensive marketing tool, but it certainly worked in my case. I mentioned this when picking up my Briar freebie this year, and they said they'd got a big euro-distribution deal out of the blue from someone who contacted them after getting the free taster.
