Can anyone suggest and good (and cheap) hotels that will be pretty central to the festival?

Also, has it been confirmed if the guests will be doing signings or have tables like at Thought Bubble? I've not been able to find anything online.

since the lake district is one of those places that are heaving in summer and quiet off-season, hotels may be far more willing to offer discounts above and beyond advertised price if you call them up directly, unlike cities where they can fill the hotel at any time.

It is a bloody good line-up isn't it? (checks bank account sadly)

This from their programme:

2000AD : An On-Earth Odyssey

Sat 19 Oct 2013 - 20:30 - 22:30

A special celebration of the evolution and influence of the ever-popular British comic 2000AD and, in particular, the work of John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, co-creators of its most famous character Judge Dredd.  They will be joined by a star-studded Council of (at least) five fellow writers and artists who have worked on 2000AD over the years including Robbie Morrison, Andy Diggle, Dave Taylor, Gary Erskine, Peter Doherty, Bryan Talbot and more.

With the thrill-meter at the ready, the unleashed creative talents of arts students at Kendal College and hosted by the ever-popular John McShane, this event will bring the story of the comic and its most famous characters to life!  Calling all Earthlets...... Rookies welcome....

Venue: Kendal College

Tickets: Purchase tickets online at
The Brewery Arts Centre
or by telephone Box Office: 01539 725 133 or in person in advance

Ticket Price: £9.00

There is a serious shedload of great stuff at this, and nearly everyone from the Edinburgh book Fest is here to and cheaper!

If my friend doesn't let me stay over I'll get a B&B I think, the lineups worth it: The Squrriel and The Big W introducing Judge Minty and Dr3dd, then the above shindig with the effervescent Mr McShane blimey!

Booked our room for the Saturday night yesterday and will be booking the tickets/ panels on Saturday.

Was starting to get excited until I realised it was still 3 months away. That will mean I haven't been to a con in 11 months by the time this rolls around.

Post by: Spikes on 11 July, 2013, 02:39:00 PM
Pretty excited for this one, and hopefully ill be attending.
What's cemented it for me, is that Dredd's parents will be attending, plus some of the Guys from the original art thread are going.

Think the best bet would be to get accomadation to make it a full couple of days. Hopefully as its in October, it'll be outside the tourist busy period?

Edit: What place did you book, dodsy?
Title: Re: The Lakes International comic Art festival - October 18-20

In a quaint little B&B about a 5min walk from the town hall (or clock tower as I think there calling it). I thought it was pretty reasonable and definitely close enought to everything. Links here:http://affiliates.thedms.co.uk/a5050420/Default.aspx?dms=2&pid=5056040#Availability (http://affiliates.thedms.co.uk/a5050420/Default.aspx?dms=2&pid=5056040#Availability)
If anyone is interested.

What panels/ events is everyone planning on attending?

I'm jealous I'm not got going but here's the details of the Carlos Ezquerra and John Wagner introduced Judge Minty and Dredd 3D double bill from early Sat night anyway:

Full of Dredd & Dredd 3D with an Introduction by John Wagner & Carlos Ezquerra – Film
Sat 19 Oct 2013 - 17:30 - 19:30

With an introduction by: John Wagner & Carlos Ezquerra

A special Dredd evening introduced by his much-revered co-creators John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. Featuring a double-bill of the critically-acclaimed short fan film Judge Minty (a character created by John Wagner and Mick McMahon), introduced by its director Steve Sterlacchini, and Dredd (directed by Pete Travis) shown here in 3D. By the time it's all finished you're guaranteed to have had your fill of Dredd.

Please note: Age restriction 18+ years

Judge Dredd, Mega-City One's top law enforcer, is reluctantly paired with psychic rookie Anderson as her assessor for the day – a day that quickly sees them trapped in Peach Trees, a 200-storey megablock, by psycho Ma-Ma, who, with her hordes of minions, is dealing in a new drug called Slo-mo. Their only way out: up. This soon-to-be Cult-classic written by Alex Garland (Sunshine & 28 Days Later) features a gritty, hard-edged screen version of Dredd and some mind-bending 3D!

Thanks, ProudHuff :)

Although the exact seriousness of the situation is still somewhat unclear, I think I'll survive (fingers crossed).

For those of you who may be concerned, it's not a medical thing (unless being an asshat counts) - the old ticker's fine (knock on wood).

I do expect to enjoy this con vicariously, though, and am eager to read all your reports!

Come and find Uncle Fester and I in the Comics Clock Tower; we'll be at the Disconnected Press table and are happy to be the unofficial meeting point for all Forum folks. Make sure you also check out Crazy Fox Machine's table for Psychedelic Journal of Time Travel.

And if you want a sketch or two, please ask Uncle Fester (or Crazy Fox Machine). I can't sketch but I'll happily write you a story :-)

This is the biz! this I want for my Dredd book, he still owns me a pint from being nice to his auntie :D

Is that some kind of filthy euphemism? just how far WOULD you go for a sketch, or even a pint?

Just booked my ticket for Saturday.

Woman on the phone was very polite and the process was very easy. Stark contrast to that of the website, which I'd previous tired and it beat me...

Got tickets for
1) Re-imagining the classics
2) The art of sean philips
3) 2000AD an Earth Odyssey

Looking forward to it! Hope to meet some other 2000ADers! :)

Just thought I'd mention I got all the art from Insurrection III back today and will be taking it with me to Kendal. (Except the last episode)
I don't have a table, but possibly will be at the signing at the 2000ad thing on Saturday night if anyone is looking for pages. (also got some Dredd and Strange&Darke) Otherwise just look for a tall Pratchett-esque chap and that'll be me. :)

Anyhoo, see y'all in the pub... er, I mean at the comic festival. :D

Cheers

Colin

Does anyone have a full list of all the 2000AD droids who are going to be on the panel on Saturday night?
Any ideas what the festival organisers have planned? They said it was something special that even the panelist don't know about.

No I'm staying in t'dales - it's not that far from here up to Kendal only about a forty minute drive.

Middling sales today - all the sellers were grumblin' - but everyone was friendly and it's a nicely organised and very enthusiastic con. The range of folk here is incredible and Kendal is lovely. And very damp.

I gave Carlos a print of him as a Dreddhead and he was lovely about it and I was as nervous as anything and it was grand.

Got a hug off Pete Wells block and that basically made my life. Kev Levell's cover for Disconnected Vol 3 is beautiful. Kendal mint cake is minty.

Really lovely festival - the town went the extra mile with lots of the shops putting things in the window to promote it.

The 2000AD panel was hosted by John McShane, who always puts on an entertaining show - and the college where it was held did a fantastic job of adding a bit of atmosphere with projectors, lights, and creepy masked 'minions' assisting the judges.

Had a great time, but was a long 24 hours...

When Carlos was walking off at the end of the second day I moved out of his way and said "sorry, Carlos!" and he went "adios, ciao" which for some reason made me incredibly happy. It's the little things - !

Lakes was pleasant and fantastically organised - must have been AMAZING to be a punter at but what I will say is that very few of the people milling around were actually buying comics. A lot of them would walk past openly talking about how they didn't like comics at all - and there were about five cosplayers there. So me and m'neighbours sold skant amounts of product throughout the weekend and there were some bruised egos from those that had travelled far. The man next to me, for example, had come from Holland and wasn't so pleased.

So - lovely weekend, populated by comics legends and brilliant events but I didn't really come out from behind my table and explore any of it - ! Maybe next year or the year after more comic fans will hear about it and start flocking down with the intent of buying comics - but whether it'll be worth the 12 hour round trip or not will be another matter...

Sorry I missed you Crazy Fox, I must admit to being too caught up in the whirl of talks to spend a lot of time (or money) in the Halls, and it took me half the weekend to work out that the top of all maps of Kendal was east not north like normal maps  >:(

I had a wonderful time, some highlights:

Having a pint with Gilbert (charming man)

meeting the boarders (cept Fox)

Simon Fraser's Dreddhead sketch,

Pete Grumpy and Doc-erty last minute Dreddhead sketch

John and Carlos tag team

The barman's face when I waved two fingers at this lot:

hearing Minty as it should be

Pete showing me Kendal Cathedral (Greggs) in the High St

Joe Sacco and Steve Bell talk

Andy Diggle's obvious love of 2K.

Got a few pics, will try and put em up asap.

What a loooong day that was!

The insanity of collecting continued with a trip to the Lakes last Saturday (no sane weekend trip for us, just a daytrip). The alarm was set for 04:00 but I woke at 02:20 and decided to get up and watch something before I set off to London to pick up Steve and Guy. We hit the M4 at 06:00 and arrived at Kendal at 10:00, which was good going, especially as there was a large transit van accident on the road not far from our destination.

We arrived in the town and it was pissing down as we tried to find a place to park. We pulled into a covered car park but it closed at 20:00, so we continued our meanderings until we settled on a free spot by the river. I checked the other cars for parking slips on their dashboards and windows and they had none, so I double checked with a garage over the road, it was FREE, so there the car stayed!

We then wandered up in the rain towards the main place, the Clock Tower and found Pete and Rob in the queue and they had kindly kept us a place. Also during this lovely bit of standing around in the rain, a certain Judge Lemmy patrolled by and said hello but he couldn't stop as he had his duties to perform. As we stood and chatted about what we were after, the doors suddenly opened and we were in.

We moved upstairs to get into the queue for the John and Carlos signing session, we noticed a few lovely posters on the wall. Some had Dredd on and some Johnny Alpha, very nice! During this time we chatted about where everything was and what we were going to do. The Minty and Dredd screening and also the 2000 AD Talk were main and foremost on our to do list.

The doors opened for the queue for John and Carlos (we had already been informed by a certain member of this forum that he had had some stuff signed by Carlos at his table but his name shall not be spoken of) and groups of about 6 were let in to see both of them. They were sat on a stage at the end of the hall and I had teh Dredd movie posters signed by John but decided on getting the stuff that I wanted Carlos to sign done at his table a bit later.

Once off the stage I wandered around the place. Upstairs this room was where most of the signing was going on and the two rooms downstairs were mainly full fo dealers. There was another room upstairs, which had books and T-Shirts in, I think.

During this early afternoon period I managed a short chat with Conor and his delightful missus and picked up my sketch cover of Dredd beating Wolverine from him, I see big things for this lad. I did see CFM during this period and I also managed to add the penultimate sketch to my Dredd Head page by Dave Taylor and have a chat with him about upcoming Dredd work.

Now it was time for my onslaught on poor Carlos, which I did twice, due to the amount of stuff I had. The movie posters were signed and numerous other items and then the Lawgiver came out and both John and Carlos enjoyed that and they signed the box. I actually apologised to the queue behind me after I brought out another pile of items at one stage. Once all the goodies were done, I thanked Carlos and John and I could actually relax.

I went back to the car along with Steve and Guy and we put all our signed stuff away, so we could wander round a bit more freely. At this stage I had decided not to change into the Judge uniform, as I felt it was not quite right for me going around battering everyone ;) Then it was off to the pub, where Colin MacNeil and the sneaky signature collector were. A few cokes later and after a delightful chat about a very interesting and personal project that Colin has lined up and it was back into the halls.

During the walk through the town you could see that nigh on all the shops had taken part, with their window displays and the banners all over the streets. This was quite an impressive display indeed!

Sometime later we ended up at the cinema for a screening of Judge Minty, followed by Dredd. John along with Carlos introduced these and I must say that the Minty screening was the best that I had seen and looked and sounded brilliant. The Dredd film started and after the initial chase sequence I dropped off a few times in the quiet moments (replenishing my energy for the drive back) and this was the first time that I had watched the film fully since the cinema release last year ;)

After this we wandered down for the 2000 AD panel and this was rather interesting. Judge Lemmy patrolled the crowds while minions took questions from anyone who had one (you had to see that bit to believe it). The panel was split into two parts, first up were this lot

And here is part two

Both panels were hilarious and very informative with the usual not to be written down stories being told!

After this we said our goodbyes and wandered off for a Chinese meal at around 23:00, before we set off at midnight on the drive back. I eventually got back at around 05:30, unpacked and watched an episode of Breaking Bad before bed at 07:30 The drive was 663 miles all in.

If this is on next year and they have a large 2000 AD contingent I think I may actually stay for the weekend as it had the vibe of Cardiff and Hi-Ex! rolled into one

The "this" that you saw needed a better interviewer present but otherwise the rest of the weekend was aces.

I'm lucky enough to live in Kendal, and having been a big 2000AD fan a long time ago, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to go along and see what the Comic Art Festival was all about.

I didn't have much idea what to expect, but turned up at the Comics Clock Tower (aka Kendal Town Hall) on Saturday morning with a couple of old 2000AD progs in hand hoping to get them signed (I did enough prep to know that John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra would be there, and used that as an excuse to spend a few happy hours looking through old 2000ADs).

What I didn't realise was how large the event was, how well organised, and how friendly and helpful all the people there were going to be - attendees, artists, writers, sellers, all happy to chat about their work or the location or the weather (dreadful for most of the time - sorry but it's called the Lake District for a reason!).

My daughter came with me and also had a great time. Yes, I did get my progs signed, but I also got a portrait of my daughter as a ninja warrior from a manga artist (thanks, Inko), she was photographed being judged by one of the Judges (if anyone knows who was taking those pictures let me know, I'd like a copy), I got a sketch of Johnny Alpha from Carlos Ezquerra (thought I'd give him a break from drawing Dredd), and my daughter got a sketch of Judge Dredd from him.

All in all a great day out, wish I'd managed to see more of the events, and I will definitely be back next year.

This is the sketch that Carlos Ezquerra was kind enough to do for me: Okay, it would have been, but I don't seem to be able to include images ... maybe I have to host them somewhere else and link to them?

You can show your pics by using photobucket and if you have a facebook account it's even easier. Just copy your photo properties and enclose them with the photo link above the smilies!

Nice. I tortured poor Carlos, so I'm glad he had the energy left to do your sketches ;)

Aha ... were you the one with the pack of cards "Could you just sign every one of these Carlos?"  ::)

Fair play, he did it though!
