A while ago we were speculating that the artist focused volumes of Dredd material would be coloured in the way they had done with Dave Gibbons' Doctor Who stuff. This turned out not to be the case. It would seem however that IDW are planning on colouring some Dredd's. Found this hidden towards the end of an article on Bleeding Cool covering IDW's panel at WonderCon this weekend.
QuoteJudge Dredd Classics will be reprinting the best storylines in color, starting with Apocalypse War, and following it up with Block Mania. These will be done with modern color, and look brand new. They will also be printed in HC in the original black and white, for those who prefer the traditional look.
So that might be exciting? Full article here.
Seems strange that they are following Apocalypse War with Block Mania, maybe be the 'reporter' mishearing? Who knows.

I'm definitely interested. I already own The Apocalypse War in B&W, so could be interested in a coloured version, providing it isn't too digital or slick looking, which wouldn't suit the linework.
IDW's classic Doctor Who reprints are stunning so this should be an interesting development.
Either way it's nice that they're putting out purist-friendly monochrome versions as well.
The key thing for me will be repro quality - it's not something I've ever paid much attention to until recently, but really bothered me last time I read my copy of Case Files 05 - Bolland's Block Mania pages especially. Would be lovely to have a truly definitive copy of Apocalypse War/Block Mania on the shelf.
The only part that worries me is:
Quotemodern color, and look brand new
I can't help but think the ideal way to go with these would be to try and replicate how the colour spreads were presented back in the day, don't go too mad with the colours. Nice and subtle, limited palette, mainly block colours. Don't trample over the linework. The modern 'cut and grad' type US colouring would IMO look a bit awkward applied to gritty 2000ad artwork.

Looking forward to seeing what they look like.
I guess this Dredd title for Free Comic Book Day has something to do with this then.

Doesn't offend me too mightily...

Looks very promising. :)
Yeah, that looks OK to me. Good to see it not demolish the original art, unlike IDW's dreadful work on the US Marvel Transformers run. (The UK run merely being very poor, through being reprinted in tiny-o-vision.)
Yeah that looks pretty good.
Not that I know about these things but it does remind me of the work done on the Gibbons Dredd stuff, so I assume its the same fella. His name completely escapes me.
Yeah, doesn't look too bad.
Weird how it makes you see the artwork with fresh eyes!

Now that looks quite lovely. And i certainly be interested in buying a colourised Apocalypse War, and owt else really, if its of that standard.
But i agree that good repro of the original art is the key, though.
I remember that coloured 1st Rogue Trooper strip by Dave Gibbons in that Rogue special. The colouring was top notch, but the repro for the art left something to be desired.
Any knowledge of who that is - ? I'm chatty with a guy who colours for IDW occasionally and I'm not the jealous type
BUT IF IT IS HIM I WILL KILL HIM.

Kirschoff's colours on volume 7 of Doctor Who Classics is very good indeed so I have high hope's for this.
Now that is incredibly impressive!
[sarcasm]Colouring in past Dredd pages is patronizing, pandering pish! THIS IS WORSE THAN LUCAS REMASTERING STAR WARS![/sarcasm]
That page is really well done and the whole thing is a worthy enterprise. Ideally, those that own the B&W editons already will want these new coloured versions too (for the cellar, f'r'instance), and new readers will be intrigued enough to pick up a few case files
