Calling all the faithful Southern Contingent, it seems that our next meeting date has been taken out of our hands by Tharg.
Yes folks it's gonna be at FREE COMIC BOOK DAY event at Forbidden Planet on the 4th May from 13:00 - 15:00!
What makes this event EXTRA SPECIAL is that the LEGEND that is RON SMITH is going to be there, alongside Dan Abnett, Al Ewing and Ben Willsher who are all superb droids as well ;)
I think this is an excellent event to do our first meet up of 2013. Standard Operating Procedures will apply. Meet up at Forbidden Planet from 12:00, do the event and then hit the Southern Contingent pub of choice, the Crown and Anchor.
So what do you all think?
Sounds good, will try n make it
Chi
Arse! It's the last Albion game of the season and it could be a very important one. Going to have to think hard about this one. >:(
The Nort Jockward squad should really try and get together for this, so we'll probably RV in late Sept ::)
Sounds like a plan!
Very tempting.
Ron Smith: true legend
If we get him to read an issue it would be like an episode of Jackanory :D
Yes, I mentioned this on Free Comic Book Day thread.
I will definitely be there. In fact I might start queuing from today.
I know you did and that's why it's here now, thank you ;)

Oh, now this would be brilliant to attend, but itll be a heck of a journey (not to mention pricey) to get there. :(
Don't forget, you'll meet the Southern Contingent as well ;)
I read 'Signing' and 'Singing'. Cue, some very silly imagery in my head...
I think I might be away that week. There's a convention I'm considering going to from 3-5 May, but if I don't go (which is very possible) I think I'll be up for this.
Just out of interest; For those thinking about travelling down, what would be the best London station to get off at, for this? Kings Cross?
King's cross then a couple of stops south on the Piccadilly line to Holborn
then walk west on High Holborn to the top of Shaftesbury avenue

I'm not agreeing to that.
As an incentive to our Scottish members who may travel down, I will buy you your first drink in the pub. Now I know that it's not true about our lovely cousins north of the border but come on, meet Ron Smith and a FREE pint
So who's turn is it to provide the lube and marital aids this time?
You know it's your time so don't be late ;)

We'll buy you a pint ;)
Make sure it's a cold one.

Lovely old geezer and very, very happy to tell you a story or two (or twenty!) better start to queue now!

Depending on where you're coming from, I'd suggest Kings Cross and take the Piccadilly Line to Leicester Square, or the Northern Line from Euston to Leicester Square or Tottenham Court Road, and walk from there.
Cheers Steve (and eamonn1961).
Checking the distances on google maps it seems a bit of a walk, but i guess its doable? Im guessing the other places mentioned are tube trains? - apologies, as im not familiar with the capital at all.
It'll be a lovely walk and you can then quench your thirst with an expensive pint

Never tried it - but it's walkable, yeah Leicester Square is a pretty close station to Forbidden Planet.
Judge Jack – I would say Covent Garden tube station on the Piccadilly Line is easiest as its more or less a straight line to FB. Just a few mins walk.
Oops. Meant to say FP as in Forbidden Planet.
I'd love to meet Ron, but I'll be aiding and abetting an Easter egg hunt (that's Easter_egg hunt, not Easter egg_hunt for the pedants) in Carmarthenshire that weekend.

Expensive is right. The last pint i had in London was £4.70, :o But didnt you say you was buying CF?
I am so sorely tempted by this, though. Checking the national rail site, the ticket wouldnt be
too expensive, and i'd hit London about 10ish, so could easily walk from Kings Cross to FP.
Though thanks to peeps on here, im well covered for other options to take - (cheers SuperSurfer!)
If you make it down Judge Jack, I will get you a pint up to the value of £7 and that's a promise :D
Done!
I must start looking into this with great earnest! Many other Norts travelling down, btw?
I'm definitely booking this on my diary, i mean Ron Smith! Wow. I haven't been to a signing before, just a quesion to all you guys who've been: can i take my own copies of stuff to get signed? Anyone who's not familiar with that particular FP let me know, i can meet you at Tottenham Court Road station and go together.
I'll try my best to come down. Would be nice to see such a legend before he pops his clogs.
Mabs, you can take your own stuff to be signed (although wouldn't it make sense if it was some of Rons' stuff. I thank you ;)). So long as you don't bring a wheelbarrow load it should be okay.

Cheers for the info, CF! Also i'll try to bear the wheelbarrow advice in mind! :D
Please bear in mind that Ron is not a spring chicken! Also, the queues for this event are likely to be long and he's not going to be able to sign for hours and hours.

The nearest would be Tottenham Court Road - the Forbidden Planet is right behind the station.
Work permitting I may indeed come to this - it would be the first time I have ever met anyone who likes 2000ad . . .

Still listening to the ECBT 2000AD Ron extravaganza so this may be covered, but if not...
Can someone attending this try and ask Ron if the 'Messerschmitts in the Mega-City' story (Prog 446) was inspired or connected in some way with his own experiences as a pilot? I've wondered about this since I first learned of his Spitfire piloting exploits...
:)

As much as I'd like to see the film again, it will very much depend on when I'm done at FP.
I'm not even sure what the schedule is at FP on the day, though.
Cheap, dank, chair-against-the-room-door hostel in Charing Cross booked.

I'm heading back on the Saturday night by train, but should have time for a couple of beers. It would be cool to meet up. I think Edmund is up for a few.
I can be 'that drunk guy' on the train.
Excellent news :D
If I'm not playing cricket then I'll try and get along to this.
Would any of you guys have any objection to me tagging along with you ? I'm going to travel up from Cornwall on the day, but should be able to get there for 12 ish ? Also, I'm not having much luck tracking down a reasonably priced hotel - any suggestions would be gratefully recieved
Tag along my good man. As for hotels, the last one I booked into in London was a dive, so I'm not your man on that front
Really looking forward to this, although the finishing work that morning may mean I have to grab an hour of sleep on the train up
Well, the Albion match isn't so important now as they are definitely in the play offs. :D
So, shall I go to the last game, haven't missed one all season, or shall I get on the train to London?
Ron Smith and drinking
Looking forward to this.
Now wondering what to take to get signed. Mind you, in the spirit of Free Comic Book Day I guess I should buy something and get that signed.
I'm in a similar situation, in that I only have the Case Files. Unless you guys can suggest me something to pick up at the shop tomorrow, I'll just take along case files 8 (Alan Grant signed that one at LSCC when I realised I forgot my Batman/Dredd collection).
Gotta get to Gosh at some point, too- signed copy of Halo Jones awaits me.
Looks like Judge Minty himself will be joining us in the pub afterwards
Alas, as much as id love to pop along for a meet up and a few beers - and of course to meet the Ron, im afraid ill not be able to attend, :(
Those that are going, i hope it all goes swimmingly, and that a brilliant time is had.
I could take one of my Daily Star Dredd collections for signing but don't want them to get damaged in transit (or in pub).
Hopefully will be a decent forum turnout. Might not be able to stay too late though.
Bring it, I'm bringing mine and they'll be protected in my daysack. I'll put yours in for safe keeping!
Lucky sods, that's what I get for being born after the mid 80s.
Have fun fellow forum folk. I won't be going. :'(
May is going to be quite an expensive month for me as I have a lot going on so I will be going to the football as that's already paid for. Really sad that I won't be there but I hope you all have a zarjaz time.

You're not the only one mate, i've also had to cancel my trip as i'm in pretty bad shape. Both my legs playing up now, can't take a step without shouting in agony. For those that don't know i've got chronic back problem/ Sciatica, and the pain goes all the way down my legs. Just really pissed, out of all the days....was so looking forward to seeing Ron and co. :'(

I don't post here very often, but I just wanted to say that this turned out to be a great signing day. The artists/writers were extremely friendly, courteous and charming - both Al Ewing and Ben Willsher did little Zombo and Dredd pics for me without my even asking, and it was such an honour to meet the legend that is Ron Smith. A very talented, kind and friendly man. Respect! Thanks FP!
The only down side of the day was that afterwards, I went to Gosh Comics in Soho, and someone had done a big caricature of Matt Smith on the front window.
Sigh...

On speed march to Victoria. Awesome day!
Just in case you were worried, I caught the train with less than 10 seconds to spare
I'll do my write up tomorrow about the day but I do hope that Ron manages to do another event like this, as it was wonderful and the reception he got was just perfect!
I hope he does - I was pretty pissed not to have made it , so fingers crossed there'll be another event this year? Amazing how jealous I can be when seeing photos of an event that I was umming and aahing about because of the cost , and then work intervenes to settle it for me. Let's hope he does something!

I really have to question your dedication to this...
Had a great day. As usual, all the droids were very friendly. Ron Smith was very courteous, shaking the hand of everyone who was getting his signature. Really pleased that I got to meet him. I decided to just get the FCBD issue of 2000AD signed and to buy Case Files 6 with a Ron Smith cover rather than take something I already own (in the spirit of FCBD and all that). I also bought Case Files 5 as I am way behind with my reading.

Correct. I bought it from DXB, then sold and shipped it just in time for the signing.
I have two significant Ron Smith pages (tight boots and Judge Fargo) so I didn't feel like I could keep a third. Unfortunately I was in Wales myself, so I couldn't make the signing.

Two very lovely Dredd pages indeed, Wake
The Tight boots page is glorious, but the Fargo page tops it by finally revealing what Dredd looks like under the helmet - John Wagner!
Sometimes my commitment for 2000 AD really buggers me up and here is another tale of such insanity, as I go in search of RON SMITH
FRIDAY Get up at 14:00 (yes folks, the day really started on Friday) and do family things before work. Go to work, chat with a few forum members while at work.
SATURDAY Still at work and finish around 07:00. Drive home and start to pack my stuff to be signed and due to the cellar being in its three monthly mess, I start to wind myself up, as I can't find certain things. In the end I manage to find everything but my camera. This is when I nearly went crackers, as it should've been in its normal place. I only realised where it was a day later, as I heard something rattling about in the boot of the car, BOLLOCKS!
Anyway, I showered and changed and for once didn't wear a Dredd T-Shirt but went for the casual look. I grabbed my daysack and said my goodbyes at about 09:15 and set off down the town to my local comic shop to grab any bits that I may need. Inside it was bristling with customers and a couple of young kids, which is always a good sign. Phil Buckenham was sketching for art fans in the place and seemed to be doing quite well. I had a quick chat and then wandered off to the station to grab the train to Victoria.
Once up London I wandered from the station past Buck House only to be slowed down by a parade but I made it to Forbidden Planet around 12:00 and met a few forum members on entering and a few new faces, as the beard was recognised from the Judge patrols ;)
I went down into the basement and met many others from the forum and then joined the short queue at about 12:30 as I wanted to make sure my items were signed. Good job I did as it soon grew quite big.
13:00 was here and we were told that the droids were just finishing their curries and they will be with us. Soon after they took their seats. They were introduced to the fans, Al Ewing silence, Ben Willsher silence, Dan Abnett silence Ron Smith rapturous applause and cheering
The queue slowly moved forward and peopel did the norm, a bit of chit chat and get something signed. I think everyone shook Ron by the hand and told him how much he meant to them.
As I moved down the droids I quickly had short chats, as all my stuff was for Ron.
Al mentioned that the Dredd/Mars Attacks came about because of the demand after that cover and he was already on issue two.
Ben is after one of the movie helmets and I've set the ball in motion.
Dan said he missed my message until it was too late but that is between me and him :-X
Ron what a gent, as he held out his hand and I gently shook it. I then handed over a few sketch cards for him to sign and he signed the playing card one first
(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BJgeDhvCEAAqxnc.jpg)
He signed the others on the back so as not to spoil the art. He then signed the limited edition Dredd Covers book.
Followed by the Judge Dredd Mega Collection Book (many of these passed before the great man)
I also had my diary signed on his creator page under Chopper but I'll not put a picture up of that ;)
As he was doing this I had a short chat with him and I mentioned the podcast and how it went down well with the fans. I then moved on and had a lovely chat with his daughter and mentioned that it was a truly wonderful event having her dad here and finally getting the chance to meet him. Again I mentioned the podcast and mentioned the straight to inking part and she said he has always been a courageous man and not scared of doing anything.
I then chatted to some of the forum again and watched them all leave for the pub but I was staying till the end to sort the freebies out for some forum members and also grab a photo with the legend himself. Obviously this might not happen but I was lucky in the end!
Here we are!
During this time I had a longer chat and we talked about his time as a Spitfire pilot and when I mentioned what did he think of Hurricane pilots he did the same reply I do about Paras, priceless! We also talked about the Burma Spitfires, very interesting. Then we got onto my beard (it was mentioned that I wear the uniform to spread the word) and I said that I grew the tache down the Falklands, as I couldn't be arsed to shave and he said it was compulsory to have a tache in the RAF.
The inking came up as his daughter joined us and he said that if he made a mistake he would just put that part in shadow or fill it in. We did talk about loads of other stuff but to tell you the truth it's all floating around in my head still.
I shook his and his daughters hands and said it was a privilage to finally meet him and went off to join the lads in the pub!
before I departed I took a couple of pictures, the first is Ron being interviewed by Molcher.
Next two are Ben and Al. Ben having something signed and then Al signing something!
When Ben was being interviewed I had a quick chat with Al about the Zombo inside the FCBD prog and he said it was done in the style of a comic in the world of Zombo. I remember he did say one long word to describe the style but I am buggered if I can remember that :-[
I also managed to grab a few words with Molcher, especially as I saw a certain few items (I think they had the number 20 on them) being signed and I thanked him for getting Ron here as well as some other Dredd at conventions stuff. Very illuminating!
Now it was down to the Crown and Anchor to meet the everyone and a liitle later Team Minty turned up, with Edmund.

After lots of chat and quaffing it was off for some grub and it was between an American place or an Indian. Inside my head I was praying that we would go USA, as I have never had a curry as I don't like food that is designed to burn your mouth. I prefer a deep flavour, along the lines of Cajun, etc...
Sadly it was Indian and so I broke the news and everyone was astonished that even while in the forces I had never eaten one. I had the Chicken Korma and then the waiter took the piss out of me, asking if I wanted the childrens menu. This went on all night but we had great fun and as all good things they always come to an end.
Outside we all said our goodbyes and went our separate ways. I wandered off towards Vicoria, not really bothering about what time I got there. That was, until I got there! I looked up at the screen and saw my train was 22:07 and then looked at my watch 22:05 & 45 seconds. I ran like the Bolt (not our Bolt) and the doors closed about 5 seconds after I jumped on. I sat down at the six seater area and started to relax, I had been up for 32 hours now.
I started to text away to a few people and then fell asleep texting and it was only when the phone hit the deck that I woke up, I was knackered.
So there you go folks, another exciting day with the Southern Contingent and a signing with a Legend thrown in for good luck
Argh - very envious - looked like an epic day :)
Ditto.
The only trouble with these pictures is how much it makes me wish I'd gone. So very jealous...
Ron seems like just the perfect gent as well.
Yep, really wish I was there!
Thanks CF for giving those of us who couldn't make it, a little taste of the day.

I want to keep all my sharpies in a Soup Dragon mug from now on.
Hey CF, you should try some of my missus' curry; not too spicy and her chicken korma is something else entirely! Sod the bleeding restaurant stuff! :D
As for the signing, thanks for the pics above and your thoughts - Sir Ron looks like such a nice chap.
Now I'm quite worried about CF, he really doesn't seem to be as committed as before: no tshirt, only a 32 hour day, no list of names on the Pub photo, standards really are falling...
;) :D Just jesting, looks like a great day for all.

You're right, that man is EVERYTHING that's wrong with comics today. I'm disgusted me like!
