A muso responds:  I like some of his stuff,  he's undoubtedly a great guitarist but I'm not too fussed about his voice.   Sultans of Swing (original single as opposed to overindulgent live version) was great the first 50 times I heard it,  some of his new stuff has a nice back to basics sorta quality, but I've always felt he takes himself far too seriously and is permanently on the brink, or indeed in the act, of disappearing up his own arsehole.
Telegraph Road off Love over Gold is great though.
Considered enough response for ya?

Actually Sultans of Swing and Money for Nothing are not too bad... it's just that the Brothers in Arms CD seem to be playing continuously from every room whilst I was uni and any liking turned to hate. Same with the Smiths... though I've since got back into them.

wow when communicado first came out it was so new , so different, so seedy, then suddenly i realised that this was the cool sounds that the 30 somethings of the day were grooving to at their fondue dinner parties...then the next thing you know its what theyre playing at the over 70's areobics class. I'm sorry it didn't date well. & he needs a goddamn haircut.

im sure I make no friends on this board but Knoffler was the sorta thing my dad would have listened too.  A musician of undoubted talent, but he was hardly an innovator.

Helped bring CD's and MTV to a world.  Am I the only one who still dislikes cd's??  They are after all kinda souless and MTV, well its yoof TV innit?

But it is a maater of taste and well, different strokes for different folks....

I think the problem is that he did really well, then really bad and now doing well again but people just remember when he was going down and down in quality.

brothers in arms, oh yea, i remember visiting friends in school hols and EVERYONE playing it..

golden heart and sailing from philie probably his best later work....

"Sorry bou, I thought you said 'Incommunicado' by Marillion - Clutching At Straws great stuff"

Fret not about your prog-rock upbringing - Clutching At Straws _is_ a fine album!

Pleasantly lacking in the cringeworthy pretentions and 15 minute keyboard solos that dogged their earlier stuff, I thought 'Clutching' sounded like the work of a band who were about to become nothing short of mighty.

And then, of course, Fish pissed off and was replaced by Steve Wotsisname and his wimpy, tree-hugging hippy crap.

(Although it was mildly amusing to work out which of FIsh's songs on 'Vigil' fitted which tunes on Marillion's 'Season's End' ...)

Ho hum ...

Cheers

Jim

Nothing wrong with a prog rock up bringing, i mean there was a time when it was ac/dc, pop too awful to recall, punk (not allowed) or spandau ballet, so where else was a proto hippy to retreat ? early early genesis anyone ? what else can top the mighty lyrics of giant hogweed for stupidity... i feel a vinyl moment coming on

Yeah, went off Marillion when Fish left, it's a shame he went his own way as his solo stuff wasn't that great and Marillions stuff just lacked.

The whole was greater than the sum of the two parts.... or somethin'.....
