Snooker legend Bill Werbeniuk has died aged 56. What an incredible boozer he was :-
1. He constantly drank lager through snooker
matches. It was the only thing that
controlled a rare medical condition which
caused his hands to shake.
2. He was thus able to write off the cost
of all the lager against tax.
3. He was the first snooker player to split
his trousers live on TV.
4. When Bill started to suffer the effects of
his lager consumption, doctors prescribed him a
drug, Inderal. Unfortunately Inderal was on the
list of snooker's banned substances, so Bill was
faced with a choice of lager or snooker.
5. So, naturally, Werbeniuk chose to give up
playing snooker.
Bill's last professional match was a 10-1 defeat
by Nigel Bond in 1990. Afterwards he declared:
"I've had 24 pints of extra strong lager and
eight double vodkas and I'm still not drunk."
I remember an interview with him where he commented that if he had a morning game, whilst everyone else in his hotel was tucking into their eggs and bacon, he had to get them to open the bar so he could neck his usual pre-match ten pints of lager!
What a man, his liver must have been like an old boot... RIP indeed!
If there's an Ebay auction I've got my eye on and notice that the highest bidder is a name I recognise from the board, as a matter of courtesy, I won't bid, even if it's something I *really* want.
It occurred to me though, that quite a few people (like me, for example) will have a username not resembling their board name or real name at all. I was thinking that we could possibly start a list of people with non-obvious Ebay names so we know if one of the Irregulars (as DXB calls us) is already bidding.
I'll start the ball rolling:
Board Name: Wils
Ebay Name: shakara!
I'm impressed.
What a guy.
Blimey. I thought the Manitoba Monster snuffed it years ago.
R.I.P. Big Bill indeed,I have fond memories of watching him play, back in the days when sportsmen could DRINK even then he was a legend.
My brother told me the Aussie cricket team have a record for the most lager drank on the England/Australia flight, which I think Allan Border holds at 37 cans.will such a record ever be broken?
Oh well, he'll be in the big pub in the sky now that never calls last orders, hanging out with good old oliver reed and Richard Harris.
That would be the weedy lttle Australian stubbies though that are only half the size of the proper cans you get here. I reckon Jocky Wilson in his prime could easily beat that.
