Title: Love for Small Press
Post by: Daveycandlish on 26 July, 2013, 08:56:27 PM
It's been heartening to see such a positive response from the folk here when the Dogbreath chaps put out a call to arms, but did you know that Zarjaz and Dogbreath aren't the only small press comics produced by folk on these boards? In fact some of the contributors to those fine publications can often be found producing work elsewhere.

Just launched yesterday, here is the latest comic from the PARAGON stable - Cushing & Sons

Written by Mark Howard (aka the Legendary Shark) - the pen behind the brilliantly epic Flesh tale in Zarjaz recently and illustrated by daveycandlish (with cover colours by Jim Cameron and lettered by John Caliber) this is inspired by our love for the old Hammer Horror films of our youth, as Mark puts it in his introduction;

I decided to build my own fantasy world based on a fusion of the Hammer films and the actors who so gloriously made them what they were. When I realised that there was a legitimate chronological gap between the films The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires and Dracula: AD 1972 which just cried out to be filled, my massive ego told me that I was just the writer to fill it.
And so I stole the Van Helsing character and changed his surname to Cushing in honour of the Man Himself, set my sights on the early 20th Century to cash in on that whole Indiana Jones vibe and then just let rip.

So when I saw the script I decided to try for a Paul Grist vibe to the art

And who wouldn't want to read an adventure story of hunting were-lions in Africa?

This 32 pager has been designed to be read on an e-reader but as it is a pdf, it can be read on any machine or tablet capable of downloading it. Did I mention it's FREE?!!

I'd love to know what you think of it - you can download a copy from
http://www.lulu.com/shop/dave-candlish/cushing-sons-ebook/ebook/product-21129866.html

It is also available as an A5 printed version - squarebound, like a Commando comic - for £2 +p&p for those who prefer things old school

Have a read and let me know what you think - we already have Book Two planned, so there will be more adventures for Cushing & Sons - monster hunters!

Awesome. There truly are some superbly talented folks who have hung out here over the years. Paragon is always a solid read and I'm about to download me the heck out of this.

Cheers for the free read, Davey. You've done a grand job of capturing the Paul Grist style you were aiming for, and the were-lion is worthy of Hammer's effects shop. Sharky's script manages to capture the attitude of the original material to both foreign travel and human sexuality, although - given the author - I was expecting much more obvious railing against the iniquities of capitalism. Cheers, again, and good work all round.

Thanks for the comments chaps - much appreciated.  :)

Did anyone download onto an e-reader? How did the format work for you? Or would you prefer A4 size artwork?

I realise some folk don't have/want accounts with lulu.com (even though it's free and only takes a couple of minutes to sort out) so I've started to serialise this on the PARAGONcomic blog

Go have a look and let me know what you think...

Just downloading my copy now. I had a lot of fun writing this and I've been itching to see the finished thing for ages now. Hope you like it - there's even more sexuality in the next one!

I can't wait to publish the whole of Archie's episode of Jikan, but not only that, I've persuaded Jason Cobley to bring his small press icon Captain Winston Bulldog to the PARAGON stable

Jason created the character 30 years ago and was the inspiration for me to start my own comic so I am seriously stoked to have him within the pages of PARAGON. If you haven't read the adventures of Bulldog, now is the time to do so; all three collections are FREE to download from lulu.com

Go on, treat yourself!

You've got to get us those two panels for Muertoads so Davey can run it!  ;)

As soon as I've got it, I'll run it  :)

How about in a PARAGON Christmas annual in  a month or so? An old school hardback - who's up for it?
