Title: White Smoke....
Post by: The Doctor Alt 8 on 14 August, 2013, 11:34:26 PM
No I am not talking papal elections here....

Google Chrome seems to have become "infected" with a search engine calling itself  White smoke. It claims ot's an extension to Google chrome... but it is giving me a pop up nightmare.
HELP!

You should be able to get rid of it by going to your 'settings' and looking in the 'extensions'

It probably came bundled with something you recently downloaded...

Try this Doc - http://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-whitesmoke-toolbar/ - Chrome methods are further down, below Firefox

Quoteso no more google chrome browser for me....

That's not a solution - Whitesmoke will still be there, and it can be used for harvesting your details etc.

Have you tried an Adware checker of any kind yet?  That's essentially what Whitesmoke is.  Here's a good free one: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/

Download it, run it, do what it says.

You can download the free Adblock extension for Chrome, then disable all pop-ups - even links that open in new tabs - via preferences.  Worked fine for me, though I found Chrome a bit of a fiddly business sorting stuff like that out for the first week or so using it.

I have found the double-whammy of Malwarebytes and Spybot (both free to download) will zap pretty much anything on your pc that shouldn't be there, even harmless tracking cookies - just be sure to run them as an administrator.  Also boot your pc in safe mode before running scans for anything persistent or elusive.
