Title: Judge Rico, anyone?!
Post by: redstellini on 02 September, 2013, 09:24:34 AM
Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and was hoping if anyone out there had a few suggestions regarding Judge Rico. What are the best stories one would read about the Judge, and more importantly, his final story?! Thanks in advance guys.  :D

There have been TWO Judge Ricos.

The first was Dredd's clone brother, who graduated with him, before he went corrupt and Dredd was forced to arrest - and eventually - kill him.

This story appeared early on:

The Return of Rico 1 episode (Prog 30) 6 pages (appears in Jude Dredd: The Complete Case Files 01)

...but was retold with an expanded script and updated artwork to coincide with the release of the 1995 Dredd film:

Flashback 2099: The Return of Rico 3 episodes (Progs 950 to 952) 18 pages

Other notable appearances of Rico:

Vienna 1 episode (Prog 116) 6 pages (Reprinted in Judge Dredd: The Complete Case Files 03)
Perchance to Dream (2000AD Winter Special 1995) (An alternate reality story where Rico killed Dredd)
Helter Skelter 12 episodes (Progs 1250 to 1261) 72 pages (Reprinted in Judeg Dredd: The Carlos Ezquerra Collection)
Blood Cadets 3 episodes (Progs 1186 to 1188) 18 pages (Reprinted in Judge Dredd: Brothers of the Blood)
Blood & Duty 2 episodes (Progs 1300 to 1301) 13 pages (Reprinted in Judeg Dredd: Brothers of the Blood)
Origins 23 episodes (Progs 1505 to 1535) 139 pages (Reprinted in Judge Dredd: Origins)

Then, much later, a new clone of Dredd was introduced who decided to take on the Rico name. He is a protege and ally of Dredd. He appears in the following stories:

Dredd Angel 7 episodes (Progs 377 to 383) 40 pages (First appearence/cameo - Reprinted in Judge Dredd: Complete Case Files 08)

Blood Cadets 3 episodes (Progs 1186 to 1188) 18 pages
Sector House 8 episodes (Progs 1215 to 1222) 48 pages
Leaving Rowdy 1 episode (Prog 1280) 12 pages
Love Story III - The End of the Affair 1 episode (Prog 1281) 6 pages

Brothers Of The Blood 4 episodes (Progs 1378 to 1381) 24 pages
(All stories listed above are reprinted in Judge Dredd: Brothers of the Blood)

Visiting Hour 1 episode (Prog 1423) 6 pages
Blood Trails 10 episodes (Progs 1440 to 1449) 60 pages

Thanks IronGraham, much appreciated. Been re-reading a lot of Judge Dredd collections lately and went through Judge Dredd: Origins again and I thought that I should get to know Judge Rico better. Will get both Brothers of the Blood and Day of Chaos next time I visit the store! Cheers again mate!

I would get, in this order:

Brothers of the Blood
Tour of Duty: The Backlash
Tour of Duty: Mega City Justice
Day of Chaos: The Fourth Faction
Day of Chaos: Endgame

Some of those books (Brothers of the Blood) might be a little tricky to source, but my advice is keep checking eBay.

WOW! Thanks Radiator, you have quite made my day there! Never knew there were two Judge Ricos, which makes sense now that I think of it, since there are progs where Dredd says that he'd killed him and others where he's alive and kicking!

Will DEFINITELY get the complete case files Vol.1 to start with, and most probably make my way through most of the list that you gave me! Have been meaning to buy the whole "Complete Case Files" collection anyways.

Cheers again mate, much gratitude and appreciation!

Will do radiator, thanks again for the thorough history explanation and book suggestions, I never had problems finding collections and trades really, my local comic book store does a pretty good job at hunting them down for me!

Glad to help!

The Complete Case Files are fantastic value for money and are well worth the time and money. The first volume is a bit variable in terms of quality (was very early days for the character so most stories are very dated now) but is worth it for The Return of Rico alone - still a powerful story that stands up well imo.

I have heard that it's worth to have in terms of value for money, it's a huge tome and chock full of early stuff, which for me is essential to know one's history of the character in question. Now I actually can't wait to go get them heh!

Yes, have heard about the Return of Rico story sometime earlier this year. Been meaning to hunt it down and now seems the best time to do so since I'm on a Judge Dredd reading spree!

Hats off to radiator for this smashing list. The new Rico clone also appears in a Gordon Rennie scripted story in Meg 216 called Prodigal. It's a cracking single episode tale where he pairs up with Judge Giant, son of Judge Giant, grandson of John 'Giant' Clay (from Harlam Heroes). My blog entry will tell you a little of the story if you want to consider hunting it down:

All the best with your reading list!

Redstellini, be aware that Rico does not appear in Day of Chaos: The Fourth Faction, and he only appears in one page of Day of Chaos: Endgame. (But they are worth getting anyway!) Also he only appears in one picture -- as a baby -- in Dredd Angel (but it's still a good story).

The Brothers of the Blood collection is your best bet.
