That right there is the perfect question to ask Pat Mills, as evidenced by his answer.  Nice one.

"Doug Church was the only person I worked with in the early days who was INDISPENSABLE. Everyone else, writers, story characters, artists and editorial, I could have replaced.

He didn't like 2000AD much and no one who remembers him seems to have liked him much either. All this only endears him to me. I like difficult people if they have talent. I know this annoys people, which is why I'm never asked it, because they'd like to think it's down to... whoever is their favourite artist, writer etc.

Not so. It's Doug you have to thank. And his success requires careful study and thought – which will never happen because it raises too many difficult issues about the nature and production of art. Thanks again, Doug!"

That's a great summary of why Mills is such a simultaneously reviled and adored figure. Hats off to contrarians, who say and do the things others are too polite (or too smart) to say or do - often beyond the point where the things they are saying and doing are helpful to their own best interests. God love Mills, who could very well be describing himself here.

Great answer from Pat.

Was really quite thrilled to get to interview him. Really enjoy the interviews I am getting to do.
