Cubicle 7 announced new staff members on their website and on one members profile:
QuoteNick Robinson is Line Developer for a new RPG based on a prestigious 2000AD property, and is also providing office support and front line customer service. Nick has worked in the games industry for many years, including as a staffer at Mongoose Publishing and writer for Tin Man electronic game books.
Mongoose Publishing seem to be scaling back a lot on RPGs to concentrate on miniature games so I'm guessing C7 will release a Judge Dredd rpg. They've released an RPG based on the Starblazer comic and done games for Primeval, Dr. Who, The One Ring and The Laundry novels so they should be a safe pair of hands for handling the property.
Cubicle 7's Starblazer (and Legends of Anglerre, its fantasy sibling) is a great project, and it uses the FATE system, which has often been put forward as a good match for Dredd, although I'd argue that with its it would work better for Strontium Dog where the characters' Stunts/Aspects can be more broadly distinct that Justice Dept might allow. SD is also the other 'Big Three' 2000AD property that Mongoose don't have a miniatures line for.
The One Ring rulebook is also a superb and engrossing production, although I've never had the chance to play it. As a company the games I'm familiarish with seem to have genuine enthusiasm poured into them, and a real feel for what's unique about a property.
I got the Mongoose Dredd rulebook as part of the miniature Kickstarter rewards, and it is genuinely good stuff, but in the peculiarly restrictive RPG world of judgin; there's certainly room for a fourth (?) version getting back to a more comicy pick-up-and-play feel.
Ugh, apologies for typos. EDIT BUTTON WOULD BE COOL, Y'DIG.
I don't know about an RPG but for what it's worth Nick is currently writing the new Judge Dredd Gamebook 'The Dark', and I'm illustrating it.
Nick also wrote the previous Dredd Gamebook with a different artist on painting duties, both for Tin Man.
I post about it here.
