Title: Cheap Thrills
Post by: James Stacey on 06 November, 2013, 03:57:55 PM
Just had todays thrill mail through and there is another graphic novel sale going on.
Halo Jones for £3. I'll have a bit of that.

Skizz for 99p! Have not read that in ages so may take a look.

Skizz for 99p is bloody great - as well as cheap-ass Necronauts and some vastly underrated Frazer Irving stuff.

This is a sale worth investigating!!

Bloomin' heck (something makes me thing I should have said something slightly different there...) they must need to clear out some warehouse space there's some right bargains there. Not normally a trade buyer but at those prices...

Great stuff indeed, have picked up a couple of items.

I know about the main stuff like Slaine but are there any hidden gems in there e.g. the likes of Wardog, Carver Hale and Bison?

My picks would be Skizz, Halo Jones, Storming Heaven, Banzai Batallion and DR & Quinch.

Has DR and Quinch sold out?  :(

Zombo was listed a moment ago. Now it's gone.  :(

Regardless, got Lobster Random, Storming Heaven and Halo Jones. I'll give Banzai Battalion and Skizz a miss as the former is getting an updated reprint soon and the latter I suspect will be also...

Halo Jones and Necronauts for me.  Have never read the former and was put off by some bad press about re-print quality on this edition but for £3 cant go wrong! I have wanted Necronauts for a while and delayed when the last sale was on so was straight in there this time

Got most of the ones I want already but still managed to bag a bargain Durham Red or two!

Both Defoes, Lobster Random & Skizz here. I think some of the cheaper ones are going/gone already.

I got Necronauts, Durham Red: The Scarlet Cantos*, and Lobster Random: No Pain, No Gain. Is that the first by the way?

Family caught my eye too. It looks my cup of tea but I was a bit uncertain about getting it as I'd never heard anything about it before...

Would any of you recommend it?

*The only Red stuff I've, er, read has been in the Strontium Dog time period.

I would, myself, though it's certainly one of those 'series that time forgot.' Some of Si Fraser's best-ever art if you ask me and the story's a good one too. The one justifiable complaint at the time made by most people was that it was hard to tell a lot of the characters apart (being gangsters, they're all wearing indentikit fedoras and trenchcoats), but reading it altogether in a collection would probably remedy that.

Don't want to piss on anyone's chips, but bearing in mind that certain books were still shown with the old placeholder covers I wouldn't be too surprised if the Halo Jones book actually turns out to be the older Rebellion edition. Likewise The Meknificent Seven.

Ha!

Has anyone ever read the making of Rogue Trooper book - presumably that is from the video game?  99p is ridiculously cheap but I'm not really sure what's in it.

I know the store says 5 days for postage on busy periods (and then it'll be a couple of days delivery on top of that) but has anyone got there stuff yet?

I've never ordered off the store before so don't know if I should expect a dispatch notice or if the books will just turn up.

I've used the on-line store quite a few times and the books just turn up around five days after ordering. There is no dispatch notice.

They have a copy of this in my local fp they can't shift. Yes its all from the computer game and is pictures of the meshes and the like used. It's not great for a game art book. I guess most of the usual concept art this sort of thing contains was just lifted from the comic though. Might be worth 99p to the Rogue completist.

Rogue Completist, his search for reasonably priced rare memoribila continues as he wages a personal war against traitorous secondary market prices in general.

Ha! Despite my avatar, I'm not a Rogue completist.  Just wondered if it was any good.

This does remind me though that I still need to pick up the game itself.  I got the Dredd one (main reason I still have my PS2) which was good, the quotes really cracked me up - "this kind of rampant consumerism makes me sick".

the game is top fun. Think it was the first to employ cover based combat that was then popularised by Gears of War. I played the Wii version which did good.

Nah, third-person games had been doing that since years before. Operation Winback on the N64 springs to mind.

It is a bloody great game, and I've completed it on PC, Xbox and Wii.  Of all versions, Wii was the worst - it popped to cover without you telling it, which made the cover mechanic a royal pain in the arse.  You'd pop to cover accidentally all the time in the middle of gunfights, or trying to leap over obstacles etc.  On the plus side, they tidied up the grpahics quite a bit for the Wii release.

I persionally think that despite not quite as good graphics, the Xbox is the best version.  the controls work really well.  You can pick it up for less than a fiver these days, and there's an Xbox Live patch to play it on your 360.

If you see it for less than a tenner anywhere, buy it without hesitation.  Even if it wasn't one of our beloved 2000AD charcters, it's still a kick arse action/stealth/gizmo game in it's own right!

With Rogue and his bickering biochip buddies, it's brilliantly realised.  Hands down the best 2000AD computer game ever.

The making of the Rogue Trooper game book is a nice item.

There some great behind the scenes stuff with a look at the development of the game and the character as a whole.

Definitely worth 99p.

The lovely making of Dredd vs Death heard book is an even more in depth look at game development and features some lovely computer art and the more traditional kind and is essential for anyone interested in video games.

I am disappoint. Ordered a quartet of books, only to get a 'we had a problem processing your card' message at the last knockings.

Tried it again. Same message.

Had to go to the bank today, and queried this - seems I HAVE been billed for two orders! YOINK!

Still, easily sorted.

Well worth the wait for the bargains though!
