Title: Do you listen to music whilst reading?
Post by: pictsy on 11 November, 2013, 04:10:02 PM
Do you listen to music whilst reading and if so what is the best reading music?

I used to put some music on whilst reading but in more recent years I much prefer reading in total silence.  I think as I've been getting older I have begun to appreciate quiet a lot more.

Total silence for me too or the quiet carriage of a train.

I can read news, forums, Facebook and the like with music on. Most kinds of music interfere with prose fiction, though, because the prose will have a rhythm and a meter that music disrupts...

Cheers

I prefer silence, but as long as it's something quiet and not aggressive then I don't mind too much.

Sometimes, sometimes not. Depends on the music depends on the thing. When I was at uni, for example, I found I had to read very dry reference materials in complete silence and sometimes out loud just to force it into my mind. Also script editing I'd prefer to do in silence but an unfussy instrumental can help things along. BUT THAT'S FEDORA-CORE FOR YOU.

I think a more interesting question is "do you listen to music whilst drawing/writing?" because that can really change things. My partner is writing a fantasy epic and she's always listening to STIRRING ORCHESTRAL METAL to get her sense of majesty in place.

Yeah, generally I don't as it will often just distract to the point where I have to turn it off.

Reminds me of my school days where a mate showed me his homework that had some Nirvana lyrics in the middle.  That is what was playing in the background and he hadn't realised til the next day what he had done.

Yes, but I find it doesn't effect what I am doing.  Sometimes the music runs out and I carry on in silence, but I like to have some sound on in the background.

Lately I've just playing what albums I have of a particular group/artist, all stacked up so I don't have to arse about having to find something each time an album finishes.  Thankfully, gmusicbrowser remembers my playlist and where in the song I paused it.  That's a lovely piece of software, that.

Almost never. I'm quite happy with silence most of the time. Although I listened to the Army of Darkness soundtrack while doing much of this month's entry for the art comp - you'll see why when I post it!  ;)

Yeah, I've done that. Handed something in for English at school and the word 'sport' appeared mid-sentence. Watching football had interfered with my brainbox. Still find it hard to believe people benefit from background music. Reckon they just manage to tune it out - something I can't do.

As said, art and music can and do mix. Just seems to suit the task.

It depends what mood im in,I usually prefer silence but thats hard to come by these days, with my daughter staying over more frequently (shes nearly 4 so just either wants to jump on my back whilst reading or watch Scooby Doo,so peace and quiet isnt an option). She wasnt there last night but as im now more used to noise whilst reading I felt I had to put something on so listened to Amon Amarth on my kindle whilst reading Preacher Book 8. Didnt detract at all from the book :)

I am actually surprised more people don't listen to music whilst reading.

I'm currently listening to Kick Against the Pricks by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and it instantly brought back memories of reading Soul Music by Terry Pratchett whilst listening to the album.  I also read loads of Rogue Trooper listening to No Need to Argue by The Cranberries.  That last one is a weird one because the album makes me very melancholic but there is always a hint of classic Rogue accompanying it.

I generally don't listen to music while I read, but that's usually because of situation/environment. I generally read in the canteen on my lunch break, on train journeys (can't read on a bus - makes me sick), or last thing at night in bed.

I do listen to stuff while drawing, but it's so rare that I draw. My efforts lately (design for my sister, a birthday card, Bert Shakespeare, and the advent calendar thingy) is probably the most I've drawn in one block for decades. I'm really out of practice. I listened to two podcasts while I drew recently, which is something I almost never do. I don't usually have time to listen to podcasts, but found drawing recently was just that perfect moment.

I tend to listen to the Big Finish Doctor Who audios when drawing, or comedy on the radio but rarely music. I keep that for when I'm on public transport to drown out the noise of the chavs.

I like to read in silence too.  However when I'm drawing like Davey I like to listen to Podcasts like the big finish productions or talk shows like In our time on Radio 4.

I do. And quite thematic it can be. Generally I listen to anything from the Irons and Slayers down to Aerosmith when reading the tooth and a mix of new wave and prog rock for softer material. Some J-rock occasionally when reading Shonen manga.

When drawing I usually have a random episode of a random tv series on as background noise.

I recognized 'Aerosmith'. Probably my fault.

Silence is great.  When in the right mindset, music without words can be ok (classical, the Drokk album).  Anything with words will distract me and make me think about what is being said rather than what I'm reading.

If I need audio to keep my attention when reading a comic, then the comic probably isn't that gripping.  Unfortunately, most comics I read nowadays fit that category.  Maybe I should make better purchasing decisions, but I keep trying stuff and I like a little less than half of it.

comics are my favorite story-telling medium, but it's either really tricky to get it "right", or perhaps there's just a lot of mediocre content out there ***

*** 2000 AD is rarely mediocre, and is generally the high point of my reading week.

I usually read in silence. My mind doesn't do multi-tasking well which means I end up tuning out the music, which means why bother?

It does depend on circumstances though. I did take to listening to some music on headphones at work recently. Okay, that's not reading in the, reading story sense (be that prose or comic) but it's something I wouldn't usually do either, as my listening to the music can distract me from my work, but the work in question wasn't mentally challenging. In fact the music helped elevate a boring, boring job. (There was  slight embarrassing moment when I was singing along to it quietly (or so I thought), then I turn to see my co-worker laughing at me. I don't think I was especially noisy, but... well... it was noticeable.)

Years ago, there was a Canadian student who lodged in our house. He spent hours studying his law books in our front room (when he wasn't sleeping strange hours* ) and he always played music. It really helped him study. Strangely, I think the process of tuning it out helped him study, although tuning it out didn't mean he didn't enjoy it.

Personally, I could probably study with music but it would be in spite of it, not because of it. If that makes sense.

*Like I'm one to talk.

Just to echo CrazyFox - you are looking at the wrong comics! Ignore the big two crap that comes out of the US pandering to those who like muscle bound men in tights punching each other and get copies of Martillo, Zarjaz, Paragon and the Journal of Time Travel. That's the good stuff!

I remember studying with music on (vaguely - it was decades ago), which made revision and note taking less of a drag. However, when it came to the silent exam environment I struggled, as I was so used to thinking and writing surrounded by noise!  D'oh!

I do... I like to try everything.  The only big-2 titles I read are the Hickman Avengers books (oh, and now the Al Ewing Avengers) - which are great. I've just grown to be more and more picky over they years I suppose.  There are a few titles I'm really really grooving on, but in order to get to those books, I have to give a bunch of books I end up not grooving on a try first.  -- I've done digressed the thread.

Uhhh...  I also occasionally will enjoy listening to really intense, unintelligible death-metal whilst reading comics.

Yep.

Reading and listening to music are almost the best things about living. I need to do both for my work.

And there simply isn't TIME not to do both together!

Often start reading with music on or vice versa but I tend to think you can only concentrate properly on one thing at a time. Nobody would ask if you watch a film while reading.

On the other hand, I almost always listen to music at work but that is specifically to drown out the background noise of my colleagues jabbering away and is primarily pretty instrumental music I know well and thus filter out. Windy & Carl, Durutti Column, Skullflower. That sort of thing.
