Title: Dredd on Luna-1
Post by: ukdane on 31 January, 2003, 04:17:57 PM
Why was the decision made (editorialy speaking) for Dredd to become Marshall of Luna-1?

Wasn't this covered in TPO 1 or 2..?
I remember it talking about why they gave Dredd a cloak - to make him look more like a superhero with a cape!

Who are you asking? I guess Ian Gibson might know, so I could ask him, but I would have thought that it was simply an idea to give Dredd a change of pace, by taking him away from Mega-City 1. The arc on Luna 1 could be considered an epic, in just the same way as The Cursed Earth or The Pit. It just happens that it has been entered into the database as a series of separate stories.

It did give the opportunity to play about with Dredd's costume. Didn't David Bishop's TPO mention the superhero cape going down like a lead balloon?

Title: Twenty questions
Post by: Wake on 31 January, 2003, 04:41:01 PM
I've just been sent some images for the site which I'm not going to upload yet. However, in the interests of creating a legal amount of anticipation, I thought a game of Twenty Questions might be in order.

I shall only answer yes or no to each question. See if you can work out what I've just received.

I'm asking anyone who can provide the answer.
I currently reading the Progs in which the stories appeared, and I just wondered why htey decided to take him out of MC-1. Surely they hadn't got fed up with that environment already...
had they?

it was about the time of the resurgence of space travel in many ways.the shuttle etc.
and the whole cold war thing was explored in the lunar city one tales.
space 1999 was quite big at the time as well.

i dont know to be honest. but its a slow day at work and its a free speech site. sorry ukdane.

Pete Doherty and I are doing a Luna-1 story that'll be appearing sometime this year about a new Judge Marshal.

No caped appear, you'll be glad to hear.

Wagner wanted Dredd to have a cape, but when he saw it he admitted he was wrong but was stuck with it for the duration of the Luna stories.

As a youth I wasn't to keen on seeing the Dan Dare space suits make an appearence in the Luna Olympics/battle with the Sovs- now I'm just nostalgic about the whole thing- capes and all.

I just wondered why htey decided to take him out of MC-1. Surely they hadn't got fed up with that environment already... had they?

Possibly, they were getting bored of MC1.

The Mega-History suggests John Wagner was tiring of Dredd by the time of the Luna-1 stories, which may explain the arbitrary change of location. The decision to have a cape and gravity boots was possibly a symptom of John's disdain for Ezquerra's original design. According to Kevin O'Neill - "There was a lot of moaning going on. John was not happy about Dredd". It has to be remembered that the strip still wasn't really fully developed back then.

So Nick Landau commissioned Pat Mills to do The Cursed Earth and shake the strip up a bit. Perhaps all concerned, particularly Mills, felt Dredd needed to be taken away from MC1 to broaden the character, and Luna-1 could have been a false start in attempting just that.

Hope that helps. And I apologise in advance for not providing solid history.

Hi Rob,
Can you drop me an email(chopper@dreddtimes.com) sometime if you get the chance. I am currently drafting the Luna-1 sourcebook for Mongooses Judge Dredd roleplaying game, which I hope to start as soon as I finish The Rookies Guide to Atlantis, sometime this week.

Cheers.
