'So, which is better hamsters or fish?'

Depends if the bread is toasted or not and if you're gonna use ketchup or brown sauce.

Fish rule.

Quite literally, mate.

You knew I was going to pop up and say that, didn't you?

I do indeed like hamsters very much, and I once had one named after Halo Jones.

I also drew (well, doodled) a superhero, years ago, called Hamsterman!

His power was being dull, but that's nothing personal, Penfold fan.

I think the answer is something like:

'A bean, half a bean, two beans and a bean and a half.'

If my source is reliable, which is highly unlikely, it was used as a code for the resistance in Europe to identify British agents who had parachuted in. If the wrong number of beans were forth-coming from said agent on being asked the question, then it was curtains for you matey.

Of course the chances of this being true are ...

Right.  I've just remembered.  It's "Two in each hand and one in your mouth".

I think it's just something adults used to say to smart arse kids to get them to think about something/stop asking them endless questions ("but why...etc ad infinitum).

Sounds like a fairly inneficient method of bean theft to me.

'A bean, half a bean, two beans and a bean and a half.'

That's the same answer as my mate tells me!

Typical though, America uses Navajo 'wind-talkers' and we use nursery rhymes!

There's a joke here with the punch-line "Or some are bean laden", but I can't quite figure out a convincing set-up.
