first Israeli in space on board...
Link: Nasa loses contact with shuttle
Nasty. They've got the film on loop on News 24 - those people are defiantly dead. CNN is playing up the israeli angle and mentioning the highly unlikely possibility that it could be terrorists.
Yes, that'll be Al Quaida's secret photon torpedo capability, able to shoot down objects 200,000 feet up on the edge of space.
Poor taste jokes and terrorist paranoia aside, ths is all pretty shocking stuff. I still vividly remember the first breaking newsflash from the Challenger disaster.
This is bad news, and shows the media in a bad light! Terrorists? Cmon it must be easier to sleep with George W's wife, than get someone that close to the space program. It must be awful for the families of the crew seeing them off, not sure if they would come back. My sympathies are with them.
Shocking!

Today over Texas Space Shuttle Columbia exploded, all seven astronauts presumed dead.
Critter
There's a weird but meaningless coincidence in this that'll get the conspiracy theorists working overtime.
The first Israeli astronaut has died as the shuttle broke up over a town called Palestine, Texas.
Hopefully, a little respect will keep most of the insensitivity out of the reports.

Also quite spooky: January 27 was the aniversary of the Apollo 1 fire, and January 28 was the aniversary of the Challenger disaster.
The first Israeli astronaut has died as the shuttle broke up over a town called Palestine, Texas.
Wasn't thinking so much of conspiracies, but this disaster will certainly get twisted into propaganda by both sides. Probably as a sign that "God is good" on one hand or "suspected terrorist evil" on the other. With one side decrying the other for doing so while at the same time doing it themselves.
Either way, the thought of yet another unrelated tragedy being dragged into a war built on lies makes me feel sick.
Well, more sick than the whole nasty business usually makes me feel.
I totally agree. Let the families mourn with dignity, without shoving cameras in their faces or using the deaths of their loved ones for military or political gain.
Respect.
"using the deaths of their loved ones for military or political gain".
A point well made Mr McNulty. Whatever the reason for the disaster, it is now far too late for the "No smoke without fire" syndrome to be halted in it's tracks. A fact I suspect Bush and his "itching for a scrap" Generals are only too happy about.
aye, quiet shocking news. space disasters ...why are they more shocking across the world than coach crashes etc ? thoughts...?
I'ts scary just how edgy & paranoid everyone has become when you see how any incident is instantly twisted into the pre-war hysteria rhetoric.
I still remember apollo 13 shock , after all those years. every apollo mission was something we all followed so closely at home & school, I remember a personal pride almost at these achievements & the exitment it generated. changed days eh .?
I was stunned to hear this. And lets not forget that if it is deatroyed utterly then there is no way of proving it wasn't terrorism.
No way of proving it as either but that wont make much difference I expect.
This is why I dislike space travel...
JK.
Dude, it's not terrorism.
dude, car travel ain't too safe either.
Travelled much in space JK???
Given the mental health of a number of former astronaughts (sp), it may explain a number of things.
Boo have you seen me drive?????
