When issue 13 of the ongoing
IDW Dredd series came out, the subscription variant was a
sketch cover. Finally, a true sketch cover to have some Dredd or Dredd world characters drawn on!
Obviously I bought a limited amount and then contacted a few of
Tharg's mightiest droids, to see if they would oblige an insane collector. Let's just say that some are out there at this very moment being drawn upon and some are waiting to go out but one is already back and what a start to this limited run that I will show!
First up is
ALEX RONALD of
Vampire Vixens of the Wehrmacht (http://www.vampirevixens.co.uk/) fame (which you must buy) and also one of the best covers of last year, which was on the Megazine.
I'm sure that quite a few of you have sketches and/or original artwork and one of the best things about such items is holding it in your hand and looking at all the tiniest of details, as you move the page around and it catches the light. I could go on and on about this cover but let's not have me waffling on any more, here it is :D

A
MEGA thanks goes out to
Alex for this and let's hope IDW grab him for a few covers, soon!
Wow!!
That Mr Ronald sure can sketch, can't he?!?
Should've asked him to draw in my copy of Vampires :O
There are only so many ways you can say wow but I'll try to find a new one for this its so good.
wOw
Forgot to add this sketch cover from
Geoff Senior, who I met at
Demoncon7. I showed him my ideas and he chose the
Dredd Vs Alien one. I'm sure you'll remember Geoff from the
Lawman of the Future.
oh man, I wonder how to get one of these variant covers....I might go see Bill Sienkiewicz in May here in the Bay Area and would love for him to do a sketch....
Oooh. Colin Wilson is not living that far from me... (well, close in Australian terms = 800km, but who's counting..?). Wonder if he'd be up for one..?
I hope he has an acid proof uniform.

Geoff Senior: another artist who, like Mick McMahon, always gets so much energy and dynamism into his work. I really wish he'd done more for 2000 AD. I recall a Dredd in one of those floppy yearbooks, which featured robots, and that was pretty damn good.
It's okay the force in which Dredd impales the alien, is helping force the acid away from his body. That's Justice Department training for you ;)
3 more covers are with artists at this very moment but here is the latest from
Patrick Goddard, which I'm sure you'll agree is absolutely stunning :o

I love the pose and the use of shadows in this image, to help portray Dredd deep in thought.
holy crap how did I miss this
:o :o :o :o :o :o :o
Love the shadows on the knees and boots! Wish I could see it in person :'(
The latest Dredd cover is in and it's one of the ones asked for at
LSCC. This is the face Off between
Dredd and
Alpha by
John McCrea and the blood shows you how this is gonna end ;)
Patrick Goddard cover is out of this world, wish it could be on the megazine cover instead, what is a sketch cover anyway, is it a unique piece of art that is never published?
Every so often, Marvel and DC, along with other publishers bring out comics with variant covers. Sometimes they leave the cover blank, apart from the Logo and it's made of a different paper stock, to enable it to be sketched on. Many people take these to cons and it seems to be really picking up over here now.
Finally we have an 'official' blank Dredd cover, which is issue 13 from IDW and so Dredd fans can truly enter the fun.
These are all original pieces of art but on a cover of a comic, which adds that little extra something.
All lovely John, the Goddard & Ronald pieces deserve to be published.
Might have to pick up my first issue of IDW Dredd in about a year, would be nice to have a blank cover handy.
McCrea's came out brilliantly! I LOVE this thread JB!

:o :o :o :o :o :o :o
That's what I thought! I'll add a few more, in fact: :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
Had wondered what a sketch cover was. I see......
Like these all but the Goddard one isn't just atmospheric, it even feels original. That's rare indeed :P
thanks COMMANDO FORCES for showing & explanation.
