Title: 2000 AD mentioned (a lot) on the radio!
Post by: COMMANDO FORCES on 28 January, 2014, 07:25:20 AM
In the early hours of this morning I listened to an enjoyable programme on Radio 5 Live. It was all about comics due to the British Library thing and 2000 AD was talked about a lot. Dave Gibbons chatted about it along with numerous other things.
PJ Holden even managed to grab some airtime, where he admitted that he was unusual

Digital comics were talked about along with some names from the past but let's not spoil it all for you, just download and listen.

The link is here but this takes you to the Outriders podcast page, look for the Comic Books podcast dated 28th Jan, as I can't link to the specific podcast!

Excellent find, will enjoy listening to that later.

The actual exhibition details are:
Art and Anarchy in the UK (British Library)
2 May 2014 – 19 August 2014
Featuring some of the biggest names in comics, including Alan Moore (Watchmen, V for Vendetta), Neil Gaiman (Sandman), Mark Millar (Kick-Ass) and Grant Morrison (Batman: Arkham Asylum), the British comics tradition stretches back to the Victorian era and beyond.

The show will explore the full potential of the medium, demystifying the process of creating comics while presenting work that is challenging to the status quo. Its materials unflinchingly examine issues around gender, violence, sexuality, drug-taking and politics.

Ah, I'd seen the British Library had a book coming out in May: British Comics (http://www.amazon.co.uk/British-Comics/dp/0712357351/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1390907699&sr=1-3&keywords=british+comics).  That explains it.

Listening to Newsnight last night. Paxman introduced an article on the gravitation of wealth, monies and talent to London with the term Mega City 1. Interesting how this term has become part of mainstream terminology.

A competition contestant has just been talking about 2000AD on Radio 6.

It almost sounded like an advert.

They said something about his brother having a huge collection of stuff and thinking about starting a bit of a museum.

Must be someone on here?

there was a similar question in recent weeks (which I can't find now via Google) about a radio interview with somebody nicknamed Aero who was going to be displaying loads of 2000ad merch - this may or may not have been a boarder named Aero who did those musical cover-montage vids.

I think Huddersfield was mentioned.

Cheers, John - you listen to the radio through the night so I don't have to. Wasn't Dave Gibbons polite for gritting his teeth and not pointing out that it wasn't him who drew V For Vendetta? That show uses the same odd format and register as the schools programmes we used to watch at school: an amused and indulgent host asks a gormless character (usually a sock puppet) which soft topic they've been "investigating" this week, followed by nice people explaining how they spend their working day. For Jameela, read Pliny the crow (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMYrlUC4JLI&feature=player_detailpage#t=14).

His mate, Matt, was on the radio again *, and he says Aero (Richard Herrero of Huddersfield) plans to display his entire collection of 2000ad and related merchandise in a museum open to the general public - including letting punters read the actual comics, which seems more like a reading library than a museum. Sounds like he has a collection of tat to rival Burdis's, who must now surely consider opening up the cellar to Joe Public if he wants to retain the title of super fan.

Aero's facebook page is going to record the progress of their project (https://www.facebook.com/richard.herrero), and currently shows the outbuilding they're converting into a dangerous repository of thrillpower. It looks like one of the wash houses/coal stores you used to see facing onto the back alleys during the titles of old Coronation Street.

* Here, 1hr 14m 30s (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03qkmxs). Try not to punch the wall when Maconie asks Matt if 2000ad is still going

quite the opposite I'm afraid. The shed is tiny, the garden gnome is normal sized and Mr Wagner is only 4'3" - the "real" one at the front of the picture is a giant robot decoy he sends to conventions.
