So I decided on a whim last minute to paint up a poster for Karl Urban to sign at a convention in Texas this weekend. So apologies for lack of polish and creative liberty with the costume :) Between work, travel, and wedding planning it has been difficult to put in the time this week.
After listening to an interview with Alex Garland about the original screenplay following Dredd America, I decided to paint up a tribute to the original comic using the movie uniform.
Unfortunately I only have a little bit of time before it goes to the printers, but I thought I'd post what I had so far.
I'm going to try to get Urban to read the intro to Dredd America at the con and tape it, I'll let you know how it goes :)

That's a brilliant and bold piece of work.
thanks! I just realized I forgot the "SS" highlight on his visor haha
because I'm totally delirious and sick and have been skiing I also drew this silly MSPaint thing of Dredd and Anderson as a break from the poster. I like to imagine Dredd pizza'ing his skis down the slopes like a noob.

Fantastic work! Hope you enjoy meeting Mr Urban! :)
Lovely, lovely stuff.
But YELLOW knee pads? My god man, WHYYYYYYY?!?!? ;)
haha about the kneepads, I don't think it bothered me as much =P
I did a quick color in for the suit but I dunno if I like it as much, maybe it's the helmet

Like the nod to the Film's stars and stripes image too

Ha! Only kidding about the pads. I think it looks stunning.
Hope Karl likes it. Here's me and him at the Dredd preview screening in 2012. *swoon* He's so dreamy!

very nice :D
@spaceghost: I think once you mentioned it, it couldn't be unseen :)
Nice pic! I just got into the comics after randomly watching the movie on Netflix, I think I've probably burned through like a billion progs in the past month. That's super awesome that you got into the preview screening.
Just noticed you have the Dredd America image on your shirt too haha

Any chance of the lovely folk at Rebellion taking this on as a print to sell? It's just too good for a one off.
Is that Jared Butler doing his dredd mouth?
Archie: haha I saw that poster on tumblr and was like oh man same composition! :p I hadn't seen it until I finished unfortunately. I can tell you that the idea to have Dredd standing in front of the Statue of Justice and Statue of Liberty is definitely ripped from Dredd America though :) it was meant to be a tribute.
Originally I was going to draw a companion piece to this one of Starling City (Green Arrow) to get Stephen Amell to sign it this weekend as well. That's why I laid it out the way I did. No time though :(
Also originally I drew Dredd with Urban's likeness but I had to give him the chin :p
Ha, no worries! Any excuse to post that back up here. I love that poster you've done, background especially , nice job.
I know it's annoying though to get plagarized, I just wanted you to know I didn't do it on purpose =P
If it makes you feel better, a few days ago I did totally reblog your image on tumblr with the note that mine looked like a copy haha. Small world!
As for those wanting a copy, I live in the US so it probably isn't feasible :) If Rebellion wants to print it though, that's another thing
Oh no no I didn't mean it in that way, there's no problem, no plagiarism, just having a bit of fun. I kinda pinched it from the film anyway, the scene in the classroom has that flag in it.
@Archie: lol just wanted to make sure....sometimes sarcasm is lost in txt :)
So, super cool beans, I got Karl to sign it yesterday with "Damnit, I'm a doctor not a judge" :) He also signed my Dredd DVD. Also got the funniest drokkin photo ever, I asked him to make a Dredd face and the rest of us made retarded faces haha! Sorry about the large image, I'm on my phone.
ALSO met Bill Sienkiewicz, he told me about the new Dredd cover he's working on. He also totally complimented my work and told me he would put in a good word for me and send my work along to the publishers! It'll never happen but still :)

Congratulations on getting Urban to add his SIG .... would be nice to see these available through rebellion.. Have you contacted them for an official poster maybe
Bill Sienkiewicz has done amazing work , I'm sure you have met a new friend..... maybe you should start work on a new comicbook cover for the next DREDD sequel
That is pretty brilliant!
Heh - fantastic!
What a great poster!
Cool poster mimikeke, and controversially I prefer the yellow pads version :-)

Where's Vzzbux when I need backup...
Yeah quite seriously your poster is brilliant.
Superb work mimikeke!
Thanks guys! Esp Minty, your film was awesome and I've always loved Greg Staples' art before I read Dredd.
Now I'm glad I went w not yellow kneepads :p
Fantastic poster, Mimi! Great stuff and thanks for getting Karl to do the reading. Been watching it on replay since yesterday...!
Awesome work, More mimikeke! ;). May I ask how much it cost to get it printed up at such a large size?
Well I got it printed up at a museum-quality fine art print shop as opposed to Kinkos (I dunno if you are in the UK and have Kinkos), which is a cheap but crappy chain. It cost me over $100 because I used a really nice thick slightly textured paper, it looks almost screenprinted. If I had printed it at a cheaper place, the entire poster probably would have turned out black but mine has really nice subtle blacks.
I'm sure if Rebellion printed it in large quantities it'd probably be like $20 :-\
I think several on here would buy it if someone made it... I'm personally not muc h in to posters but this would make a great postcard too,
Man, this is bloody brilliant - your poster is ace, the film of him reading America is just nuts, and I totally love your photo with him!!!
Can I ask - were you aware of the Judge Dredd comic prior to the film? Or has the movie brought you into the fold?
I never read any of the comics prior to the film, I mean I knew they existed, but since I live in the US it's hard to find. I actually went to 2 large comic shops, one in San Francisco (where I live now) and one in Dallas (my hometown), they had never heard of Dredd WTF! Like I tried to order Underbelly through one and it was so difficult, I think maybe I'll just order it online.
I got more into comics in the past few years when I was working on Marvel Heroes. Plus a bunch of my current EA coworkers are ex-comic artists, they actually know quite a bit about Dredd!
I have some really epic faux Dredd 2 and Dredd 3 movie posters in the works (featuring the Big Lie and the Dark Judges), unfortunately I have to finish wedding projects haha first. Booooo
Fantastic! Welcome to the board! Given you're only 20odd posts in you've made quite a splash! ;)
Are you reading 2000AD as well, or just concentrating on the Dredd back publications?
I've pretty much focused on Dredd stuff since it's only been like 2 months since I started reading. I'm curious to get into Slaine, we have a pretty famous metal band here in San Francisco called Slough Feg :) Also mentioned it before but my fiancé's cousin randomly came into possession of hundreds of old 2000AD issues so I'll get to read those.
You should tell someone to unlock my board access, since I only have 20 posts I can't post in most of the forum! :p
Hey, Richmond! Any chance of an unlock of sanctions here please mate? ;)
Mimikeke - I recommend you subscribe to 2000AD weekly via the iPad if you have one! The weekly Prog doesn't take long to read, and you can enjoy it in conjunction with all the backstory stuff you're doing too.
Just a thought! :D Either way, good luck with it - you have SOOO MUCH amazing reading ahead of you. ;)
I signed up to the forums JUST to say that I love that print!! I really hope you make it available somehow, cause I'd love to hang it on my wall.
Fantastic work!

Thanks!!!! I'm not sure how
2000AD feels about selling fanart though? maybe if I get the ok. Or maybe 10 years from now I'll be good enough to be in comics :) My ex-comic coworkers are all like 'nuuuuu don't go into comics, it's terrible' though haha.
@shaolin: thanks for the suggestion, I'm going to take the plunge and subscribe :)
