Title: Sense of Adventure, the sixth sense!
Post by: ukdane on 03 February, 2003, 05:32:15 PM
Would people agree with me that on the whole, the stories in 2000ad have lost their sense of adventure, only a few stories still have it (and these seem to be the more popular stories) i.e. Judge Dredd, Strontuim Dog, Dante etc etc.

Certainly reading stories from 2000ad's golden era, their appears to be more "boys action adventure" to them than many of the less popular stories have now.

That's why Edgy's pirate story was great! A fun romp of an adventure!
On the whole though, you're right.
MORE ADVENTURING!

Personally I keep trying to enjoy Dante but I find it really boring. Like red seas I really had high hopes for him (with Dante it lasted much longer) but both degenerated into mindless attempts at coolness which bored me to death. However I feel that in the past tales were less... complicated. They could have a solid plot but they never let things meander abou all over the place.

I'd like a good no-nonsense strip once in a while. I hate 90% of what Dan Abnett does but I loved roadkill. Surely something that isn't too challenging once in a while isn't too much to ask?

The problem I feel is that Tharg has gotten too obsessed with making 2K as erudite and intellectualy challenging as possible and he doesn't want it to be regarded as "just a comic". Let's face it though, it's a comic! We read comics! And why? For entertainment!I dont care if hookjaw cant recite the sacred hindu verses of Djinn banishing on the holy day of sebadduabdushaar! I just want a big man yelling AAAAARRRGGGGHHHH! with a bloody big hook through his back. And why not? What are comics but escapism? After all it's only a bit of fun...

They could do worse than brining back Bix.
I actually wasn't that fond of Res Seas, although I do agree it did have the adventure feel to it.
Space Adventure please.

What happened to the old format

Dredd
Future War
Aliens
Robots
Future Sports

Okay, so I didn't like the sports ones, but the principle helped keep a good balance of stories in 2K.
We need more stories about aliens (Asylum doesn't really count - the main characters were human or half-human-but-look-like-humans, Shakara is good, we need a sequal at least) and we need more stories about robots, ABC or otherwise.

Agreed (although I am partial to Belardinelli drawn future sports stories!)

I'm not really sure a 25 year old formula is really the answer.

It would be nice to have some fresh ideas, some decent characters and some gripping storylines and a bit of enthusiasm though, in whatever stories tmight come along.

I liked Mean Team, before they got to Earth.

I'm very much in favour of future sport stories, despite their mixed success in the past.

Harlem Heroes and Mean Arena (first version) were fun, IMO.

Staying on-topic, I reckon a future sport story with the twists and turns of a Roy of the Rovers style would bring in a sense of adventure.

And don't diss Dante. That strip is more fun than anything else in the comic.

I always enjoyed the sports stories, the problem with them was that the concept was enjoyable but they always outstayed their welcome.
Harlem Heroes was a good read but was never that keen on Inferno. Even Liked the Mean Team but as soon as Bad Jack killed his owner it went seriously downhill.
My fave has to Mean Arena a great opening (it may have been predictable but I was only 13) but again oberstayed its welcome with the Slayer hunting his brother's killers getting very tired.
Love to see a new sports story but with a definate ending already lined up so it cant keep going on, and on and on.

I enjoyed Slaughterbowl, though it was overshadowed at the time by dross. A nominal sports story that had a definite (and deliciously black) ending, which didn't drag on.

On a side note, and quite incidental to the adventure topic that kicked the thread off...

I think part of the appeal of the old adventure format was a kind of open-endedness to the stories, which seems rather carefree now. Strips were there to run for as long as possible, whizzing off in all creative directions, until they ran out of steam and were axed, or lazily spun off with a supporting character.

Then there was a shift to fairly insular (IMHO stuffy) stories with a quick pre-plotted end in sight, and an eye on the inevitable graphic novel. I think a lot of the sense of adventure went out the window with that, but then happily nothing outstayed it's welcome.

Thank heavens for Dante, which combines the best of both worlds. The only downside being the sheer number of novels that some folk are expecting from it now.
