Title: Judge Dredd C64 Game insert
Post by: Pete Wells on 26 February, 2014, 09:01:23 PM
I came across this today, the instructions from the Commodore 64 Judge Dredd game. It was a nice little bit of nostalgia.

Hope you like...

Yes. I remember getting this for xmas and the very brief period of excitement, and much longer period of dissappointment that it inspired.

The Nemesis game on the C64 was much better.

Nemesis was at least a decent game, even if you could have easily enough replaced Nemesis with any generic character. The only 2000 AD property I remembering faring quite well in both concept and execution on the C64 was Rogue Trooper, although the Judge Death (http://www.gamesthatwerent.com/gtw64/judge-death/) game had some promise.

wasnt there a Strontium Dog game too? Cant have been that good if its not at the front of my memory with the Nemesis, JD and Rogue Trooper C64 games.
I remember the Rogue game being easy to complete, something very rare with that era of endless point scoring games

The Stront game was based on 'The Killing' if I remember correctly, and was a bit pants.

EDIT:  yeah, here it is:

I never played the Rogue Trooper game although I remember the advert for it appearing in ZZAP 64.

Never saw that Judge Death game. Looks like it might have been a winner back in hte day. I was always completely entranced by any game which gave the illusion of 3D, like the Aliens game, so I would have been all over this.

I have to say though, what were they using as a model for that Lawgiver and Anderson's uniform? Very shoddy.

I remember there being 2 different Strontium Dog games. There was one based on The Killing on the Spectrum and a different one on the C64. The C64 one got bad reviews as I recall, so I never bought it. The Spectrum one was supposed to be a lot better, but I never had one and never played the game.

There was a truly dreadful Sláine game (http://www.lemon64.com/?mainurl=http%3A//www.lemon64.com/games/details.php%3FID%3D2340), which looks rather sad when compared to the (admittedly released later) Usagi Yojimbo game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffOjvx6xLXE) and the likes of Barbarian 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E21I6bMR9wY).

Dredd got a second game (http://www.lemon64.com/?mainurl=http%3A//www.lemon64.com/games/details.php%3FID%3D1390), by Virgin, which wasn't quite as bad as the first, but it was still mediocre. Halo Jones, of course, never happened (http://www.gamesthatwerent.com/gtw64/halo-jones/), being swept up in the Piranha bankruptcy that ended the Judge Death game.

I think that was pretty much it for the 8-bit machines.

Dan Dare's admittedly more Eagle than 2000 AD, but the first of the three 8-bit games was great, especially on the C64 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1j1uLyWwskc).

The Slaine game was at least atmospheric, although I remember being confused as to what was going on most of the time.

Johnny Alpha looked like a yellow tulip in The Killing.  Flobadob.

Lots of C64 users knew they could do better than that too.

2000AD characters were always a popular subject for something to draw; home micros obviously having a big appeal to the audience reading the prog at the time.  E.g. -

On the subject of the original Judge Dredd game (Melbourne House), I never got far but I really liked Neil Brennan's theme music for it.

Neil Brennen was a genius on the C64. His music for Way of the Exploding Fist is beautiful, and his score for the Usagi Yojimbo game is also impressive. Nice guy, too, when we swapped emails a while back when I was writing about C64 music for Retro Gamer.

That Alpha is sublime!

Loving the Dredds too. In fact, loving all of them!

I tried my hand at a DR & Quinch too. Unfortunately, being limited to 8 colours in Mode 2 meant highlighting and shading had to be done by stipple instead, so the end result wasn't quite as smooth.  It did teach me that mixing a colour palette on a monitor was very different to mixing acrylics though.
