Title: PC Game
Post by: W. R. Logan on 07 February, 2003, 08:23:35 PM
Another question for our technologically minded boarders.

Ive never really played any PC games, the old coal powered PC couldnt handle the strain.
So that I dont get wasted every 5 seconds when the Dredd V's Death game is released can anyone reccomend a game to get my thumbs and brain in training.

La Placa Rifa,
W. R. Logan.

Best first person shooter I've ever played on PC was Half-Life, but I'm sure there are better, more recent games knocking about. If DvsD is going to have non-FPS elements, you might want to give the very good hybrid RPG/FPS, Deus Ex, a pop.

He's right you know.  Or System Shock is worth a look.  These 3 games are quite old as well so it should ease the strain on your old PC as well as your pocket.  If you shop round you can pick these up at a good price.

PS - If anyone with a PS2 is buying new games from anywhere cheaper than Argos at the minute (?29.99) then let me know.  Cheers.

System Shock is now so old I think it's abandonware (I was certainly told that it will not be available in stores again), but SS 2 is deffo availabe and very good.

BTW, Logan - if you're a war nut then Medal of Honour: Allied Assault is prolly the shooter for you. The demo I played was ace, anyway - clearing out a little French town...

I would second Half Life. It's getting on abit now but it's still a damn fine game, and the mods can't be beaten. Also as a hater of cut-scenes I really like the way that the narrative is entirely integrated with the game, so you never have a moment where you loose control of your character whilst it acts out a piss poor movie clip.

Medal of honour is alright, and it looks great, but... Every level is so damn linear, and the shear number of invisible walls gets irritating. See a bit of rubble that looks like it might be a useful vantage point? Don't bother trying to scramble up to it, every damn time you'll be stopped by an invisible wall. Also if my BAR has a bipod why can't I deploy the damn thing so it doesn't jerk around whilst firing so much.

I've not had any problems at all with Medal Of Honor and it's second only to Half-Life (which you can get for ?6.50 now)if you're after FPS games. I'd also highly recommend Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast and Soldier Of Fortune 2. Medal Of Honor online is pretty hard to beat.

Medal of Honor is generally excellent (especially the Omaha Beach and belting around in a Tiger Tank levels), though the intentionally drab and realistic scenery does start to create an air of saminess towards the end.

Would heartily recommend No One Lives Forever 2 as well, if you fancy playing a great Avangers/Bond pastiche which contains humour that is actually humourous.

Soldier of Fortune 2 is great for extremely un-PC bloodshed, and the forthcoming Unreal 2 is rumoured to be a belter of a straightforward alien blaster.

Not completely a shooter, more of a squad based strategy, but if you want a really, really good WWII game then Hidden And Dangerous has been rereleased in , complete with patches to bring it up to date.

Also I would highly recommened the Half Life mod Day OF Defeat.  It kicks the shit out of Medal Of Honour for multiplay WWII action, and with the price of Half Life being so low it's practically free.

I've spent a couple of evenings getting to grips with a demo version of Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast which I got with a Mac trade publication this week. Can't wait to get the full version.
My only criticism of Jedi is the number of keys and key combinations needed to really take full advantage of the force powers (they?re all there from mind trick to Vader?s force grip and the Emperor?s lightening) and to perform some of the more complex acrobatics needed during a light sabre battle. But I?m sure that can be remedied with a USB game pad.

I think that where all the PC first person shooters that have been recommended in this thread truly come into their own is when they?re played online. There?s something special about teaming up with or going against other online players rather than the programs AI characters. I hope that the Dredd Vs. Death game has some sort of facility like this- imagine dealing out justice with other online judges on online perps..

One other thing my Spanish is a little rusty but you sign your messages-

La Placa Rifa or the raffle badge

I?m aware that it is from an AD cover illustration but what is its significance?

Groovy!

Now someone wake me up when Duke Nukem Forever comes out...

Thought I'd mention a couple of other PC games that are worth looking at, albeit not first-person shooters - Mafia is a truly great game (as I'm sure I've mentioned before), essentially it's like a more focussed version of GTA3 (or Driver 2 without hardware limitations), except set in the world of Godfather Part 2 (the De Niro bit), or Once Upon A Time In America. The gameplay is excellent, and it has the most encompassing sense of time and place I've ever encountered in a game.

Splinter Cell is also definitely worth a look if you like the idea of a sneaky stealth game. I've mostly played teh Xbox version, but from a PC demo I loaded up earlier, that version seems to be just as strong (though you need a serious PC to run it without any slowdown).

It may not be an FPS, but GTA: Vice City takes a hell of a lot of beating. Sheer gaming bliss.

If you just want out-and-out madness and blowing things away with ludicrousley large guns, either of the Serious Sam games fulfill both.

I'm still holding out for a Bill Savage FPS.
Come on, it's the perfect scenario - forget Dredd vs Death, I wanna shoot Volgs!!!

I dug out my old N64 and played a few rounds of Golden Eye this weekend- if you squint at the screen long enough those Russkies pass as Volgs for sure.

In multiplayer mode you get to play Robbie Coltrane. In my mind this makes it one of the coolest games ever.

(You can also play the midget, but this is frowned upon by right minded gentleman players as he's harder to hit than all the other characters)

Voyager: Elite force is fun for a while in game mode, but if you can get into the single player holomatch it can last you indefinitely.

Deus Ex is excellent ifyou want a thinking mans shooter but half-life is only really worth it for the vast selection of mods. "They hunger" is best.

Project I.G.I is limited but polished and challenging too. But if you really need to get to grips with the basics go for doom 2. Never been beaten.

"They hunger" is best.

I agree, but some of the voices are more than slightly dodgy, even for a fan mod. 'Huuuuunger!' and 'Frrrresh meatttt!' are, IMHO, acceptable phrase for a zombie that somehow still has the grasp of spoken English. But 'Come to mummy'?!

I dont have it but the zonbie nurses seemed very freaky and the almost incoherent mumblings of the headcrabs..

Seriously though Doom 2 isn't on my new PC and I NEED it or I dont know what I'll do!

Re: Golden Eye

Likewise if you're playing against some one who's just a bit too good make 'em play as Jaws- bigger target to hit and stands out like a sore thumb in that white shirt.

Lets not forget the totally awesome and rocking Action Half Life, which is the nearest thing there is to an action movie simulator, and the old gun nut standby, Counterstrike.

I am totally with Askham.
I like blowing things up on my PC.
And I WANNA SHOOT VOLGS!

Come on Rebellion, this has GOT to be a (hidden) feature in Dredd v Death.

It won't be a fps without a shotgun.

Can't you picture the dialogue?

"The crime isss life. The sssentence is death..."

BLAM! (or BUDDA BUDDA, ideally)

"Dirty Volg agent! Eat lead!"

Hell, why stop there? If there's going to be a multiplayer mode then why not have characters as the models?

Lucky that it is an FPS with a shotgun then...
