Title: Cintiq alternatives
Post by: Steve Green on 29 July, 2014, 11:23:53 AM
I just saw this come up for pre-order, it's considerably cheaper than the Wacom Cintiq...

No reviews yet, but this is one for the previous model smaller model...

Man, that's a great price (assuming it's even a half decent product).

BUT... My heart is now set on some sort of standalone cintiq/cintiq-alike. :(

Yeah, I much prefer the idea of something separate (or better still something that can work as both)

That's interesting indeed. I had championed the kingtee 22HD in the previous Cintiq alternative thread.
Last month they released a new model with hot keys the 22HDX, mine should arrive in the next few days. Price wise it was £529

Ive often wondered how a samsung galaxy tab would fare as a cheap graphics tablet, their s-pen is meant to be great and the digitizer layer on the screen of some of the tab models is made by wacom. there are a lot of models and the naming convention gets confusing though!

I couldnt see how to edit my post, so sorry for double posting - I think its actually the Note series of samsung galaxy tablets that have the wacom digitizer

I have thought about this as well as a cheap on the go sketching tablet. Not sure if the Samsung tablets have pressure sensitivity though?? The Microsoft surface pro also has a Wacom screen and supports pressure sensitivity but unfortunately runs Win 8 and cost a bloody fortune!

as far as i know, all wacom digitizers detect pressure. there may be tiers of pressure-sensitivity, im not sure. Definitely read reviews before you buy a model, ones that go into detail on the drawing/writing side of things.

you can pick up a 12.2 inch, 2560 x 1600 resolution Note Pro for <£400. still a lot of money, but if youre in the market for a general tablet anyway say, i think thats a very attractive proposition indeed. i love that resolution - something thats always stuck in my craw about those super expensive 20+ inch cintiqs is that theyre only 1920 x 1080 or 1920 x 1200, id like much more resolution myself.

also, I think that if a tablet has a proper wacom digitizer, any proper wacom pen works with it too. so youve got a choice of professional grade styluses there if you dont like the bundled stylus.

It may well be different now, but I've been unable to use previous Wacom styluses across newer/ different graphics tablets in the past, so I'd definitely double-check that.

ive definitely read that there is cross-compatibility, the bamboo feel for example seems to work with the 12.2 Note Pro. but yeah you will want to make sure a particular wacom stylus works with your particular Note tablet if you have one in mind

I just looked into it some more and the range of compatible wacom pens is much more limited than i made it sound, sorry about that! Good catch Jon. Some of the Bamboo range works, research would be needed

I've had one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-Thinkvision-LT1423P-LCD-Monitor/dp/B00G0FVRUG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407440223&sr=8-1&keywords=lt1423p (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-Thinkvision-LT1423P-LCD-Monitor/dp/B00G0FVRUG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407440223&sr=8-1&keywords=lt1423p) for about a week now, still settling in to it but here's what I make of it so far...

PROS:
Half the price of a Cintiq 13HD!
Great response, no lag and calibration is spot on.
Nice solid construction. Feels sturdy and has loads of secures positions. Pretty much from 0 to 80 degrees.
Screen is nice and bright and there's no loss of viewing quality from different angles.
No tangled mess of cables. One output from the monitor goes in to two USB ports.

CONS:
Resolution not as good as Cintiqs.
Took a bit of playing around with drivers and settings to make it work properly.
Requires a USB 3.0 port so not suitable if you don't have one.
Stylus is a joke. It's 11cm in length and about 0.6cm diameter. I'm going to have to buy a new stylus.
I've read that there are some issues around the pressure sensitivity but I haven't really used it enough to notice and as I said, I'll be buying a new stylus which may change any problems there.

Overall, as an alternative to the Cintiq I'm perfectly happy with it! Once I start to really draw digitally with it I'll be in a better position to judge tit's suitability.

Thanks for the link. Seems like the GT-220 is pretty decent. I received delivery of the Bosto 22HDX on Monday of this week and have been messing around with it in Manga Studio, Painter, Photoshop and Z-Brush. I'm very pleased with it.

From watching the GT-220 review it sounds like similar experience. The 22HDX also has the hot keys on the side like the Cintiq.

Never heard of the Bosto one before. How is it going for you, Antodonnell? The inclusion of hotkeys interests me.....

Hi Darren I'm only getting a really good go with it today as I've had a week away from the PC.

So far for sculpting in Zbrush and drawing in Photoshop, Manga Studio and Painter feels great after spending an evening calibrating everything.

I've not tried to use the hot keys yet other than for the rolling ones to change brush size and zoom in and out. With that said I've never used hot-keys on a tablet. I will need to setup some program specific configurations soon.

I had aimed to get my entry to this months art comp produced with the Bosto. Time got me. It'll need to be used for next months.
