Title: General thread of artistic quearies
Post by: Hawkmumbler on 25 October, 2014, 08:51:07 PM
So I decided to do something about my horrible anatomy (say nothing of my art) and have signed up to attened some life drawing classes. However thats gonna involve sketching on large A3 blocks, something i'm not used to. Would a thicker grade pencil be recomended for clarity on a sketch this size as apposed to the 2B I use on A4 paper?

Sometimes you'll find that the person running the class will specify which equipment you'll use during the session. In our classes we would start with something very loose, like charcoal, which gives the drawing more movement. Sorry to be so vague, but I would say ask!

Thanks Darren. Had my first session last night and really enjoyed it. Main focus points of the session where joints which was a good learning curve for me as i've never managed to draw a convincing shoulder joint yet. Still wasn't very good by the end of it but maybe next week.

And yes, we started out using willow for a rough sketch then used a rough grade pencil of our choice (I'm so used to using a mechanica pencil at this point I just stuck with that) for the second.

That's great to hear. Glad you are enjoying it, it's something I've been meaning to do for the last couple of years.  ;)

Flat (carpenter) pencils can be beautiful for this kind of work.

I hear you Hawk  :)
My l-o-n-g sabbatical from comics and any kind of art came to an end only recently and I returned to life-drawing classes a few months ago. I just love it, because it's scheduled you have to make time for it and that really helps. You will improve too, it is addictive stuff...

My class is very informal (no tuition) but after some trial and error, it's charcoal for me and due to the turnaround of poses, usually A4. Some people paint, it's a real mixed bag of methods. Have looked into formal classes too, that's next. I'm sure the real artists here can offer good advice, the forum art on show is pretty damn inspiring most days  :)
