Nice, that's a lot of Dan across 2 volumes. Highlight has to be Belardinelli  :)

Good news! I can remember reading the strip first time around in 2000ad. Wasn't there a guy who had a handgun permanently fused to his hand? The Mekon was such a great villian too.

Zarjaz!  Never thought I'd see the day.  A lot of this will be new to me, as my collection of the first few years is patchy.

Oh wow, oh yeah - the last strip missing from my collection. Didn't expect to see this, this side of me plucking up he courage to go for the first 40 issues. FANTASTIC.

Now we just have to sit and cross our fingers that they print those old Belardinelli centre spreads in colour. Probably a little optimistic but one lives in hope.

Thanks for the heads up. made my day that one.

Me too. I've only ever read Prog 1 and the stories reprinted by Eagle/Quality which started from around Prog 50 for some reason.

Great news.

Dave Gibbons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Dan_Dare_stories#2000AD), presumably.

I'm hoping they will - it's more of a finite special edition like Zenith rather than an ongoing collection.

Plus I think there are at least a couple of full-colour annual stories if they're reprinting those as well.

Tharg is mighty indeed to arrange this to coincide with Dan Dare - shame it's not a skull, but you know...

Man, I'm SO tempted to strongly hint that such a thing might be happening... But it's not.

(But if The Mighty One wants to give me a call, I'm up for it!)

The bring back Dan Dare campaign worked?

Great news! So great I'm inspired to post on here for the first time since about 2006.

Huge spaceships, weird aliens, spacemen with guns and Gibbons art are reasons for an occasional re-read of early progs. Finally they can be in a trade on the bookshelf.

Dan Dare annual 1979/1980

A Gibbons appearance in Thargshead Revisited?

Also a 'Return of the Mekon' story for 3000AD?

Nice one Steve!

I just lapsed into a blissful fools' daydream where Vols 3 and 4 continued straight into the '80s Eagle... Ian Kennedy's Fireflight and the Earthfort flashback stories between shiny hard covers... >glaaarrrgggle<

There's a Dan Dare strip in the 77, 78 and 79 Sci-Fi Specials, as well the 78, 79 and 80 2000AD Annuals. He also crops up at Dredd's surprise Christmas Party in the Judge Dredd strip in the 1980 Dan Dare Annual.

The early stuff is the best by far.  After the Mekon story ends it starts limping a bit.  The nadir was around issue 300 when they tried him as some sort of super hero / galactic policeman.  I have a sneaking suspicion that it was Tom Tully who was responsible for the last storyline around prog 100 on with the cosmic claw etc.  It certainly reads like a lot of the tropes from that aborted tale.  The Dave Pugh stuff towards the end redeems it a bit, turning back to the fifties style but it never fully recaptured the Kennedy glory.

No matter how naff it got, the art for the Dan Dare strips in the 1980s Eagle was uniformly amazing*, especially the lush full colour painted double-page spreads and the way the strip would often start on the front page of the comic.  I consider this version of Dan Dare the "real" one as I was exposed to it first - that one with the invasion of the flesh-eating jellies put the shits right up me as a nipper.

* Arguably a blanket statement for all Eagle strips.

I have to admit a reprint of the Eagle strips would excite me a lot more than the 2000ad strips which I never really got on with :(

I never read any of the Eagle strips, but have a soft spot for the 2000 AD version (I still remember the spaceship cameos when the Space Fort got captured)

Not having read them in decades, and getting nostalgic over the Everything Starts podcasts, I can't wait.

Loved the Belardinelli stuff but was totally blown away when those big chunky space ship designs from Dave Gibbons appeared.  I was reminded of some of the big alien stuff that are just basically giant flying guns when reading Ian Banks' The Alchemist a couple of years ago.

Does this mean that if Rebellion wanted to, they could make hardcover reprints if they wanted? You know like, 2000AD Volume 1 with progs 1-10 in them?
Title: Re: 2000 AD Dan Dare reprinted
Post by: Steve Green on 21 December, 2014, 05:25:33 PM
Someone asked about it on the fb page, I think the response was along the lines that they tried similar before (although I think it was more like a trade) and they didn't sell that well at the time.

I could see it being problematic since Dan Dare runs at the same time as the Cursed Earth which would be missing the 4 episodes that can't be reprinted.

Think the edition you're refering to wasn't a trade, but this collection here - the biggest amount of Thrill Power i own outside of the original Progs, collecting together the first 10 issues, complete with the Dan Dare stip.
Sadly, only ran to two volumes and, doubly sadly, i don't have the second  :'(

Yeah, that's the one.

Apart from the other issue I mentioned, Dredd, Harlem Heroes, Flesh (and soon to be) Dan Dare will also have their own separate collections.

I'm not sure how much demand there would be for a collection of progs.

Maybe, possibly, a cleaned up hardback at the original size, with any notes/backgrounds to stories from those involved...

Seems pretty niche though and it it still runs into the legal problems with the Dredd strip before it hits 80.

Yeah, some of the pages are a tad fuzzy. But, while seperate volumes for seperate strips makes total sense, i DO like the idea of reading multiple early Progs collected together and i can turn the pages without the fear of the paper giving way around the staples.

I'd break my "hoi, no rebuying!" policy for a hardback progs 1-10. It would be a lovely thing.
