Title: New Year's Resolutions
Post by: JayzusB.Christ on 02 January, 2016, 04:10:14 PM
Anyone got any?

Here are a few of mine:

1. To get some land to live on in my mobile home.

2. To pay off the last of my debts. Nearly there.

3. To write my second ever short story and send it to a few publishers.  (The first one wasn't published; it was a bit shit.)

4.  To set up and teach an art course.

5.  To go to the gym and my martial arts course regularly (at least once a week for each).

6.  To meditate for at least 10 minutes every day; filthy hippy that I am.

That's all I can think of for the moment.  Yourselves?

1. To be more creative. Finish off some projects I started and work on another idea that I have. ( I won't necessarily finish that all next year, but point is, I want to make some leeway on something and stop procrastinating.

2. Make more effort concerning things I'd like to change in my life.

3. Control my emotions a bit more. I'm not one to fly of the handle at people but I sometimes spend too much time dwelling on things that bother me and it can lead  my mind to a dark angry place. Sometime you've just gotta let things go. I'm usually blowing things out of proportion anyway.

4. Stop worrying so much!

Never usually entertain these but...

- Talk more German better.

- Read fewer comics. Haven't finished an actual book for two or three months.

- Get off my arse and go snowboarding at least every second weekend between now and April.

- Be less tolerant of other people's stupid opinions.

1. Plan some regular properly dedicated time with each member of the family, instead of continually intending to and never 'finding' the time. Time management is my weakest trait, and I need to get the priorities sorted.

2. Lose some damn blubber and get the kids more active as part of the process.

3. Get back to cooking proper food as a matter of course - I've been so busy this past year that I've been taking short cuts and leaning on the missus.

4. See if I can employ a second person for a decent chunk of time, rather than the few days I've managed so far. I lost so much good business last year by trying to cover everything myself - and I'm just too old to work 20 hours a day, 7 days a week, as I discovered to my cost.

5. Get back to programming. I have stuff I really want to do for work, and just can't anymore. That's not good enough.

6. Get to a conversational level in Irish. My son is now better than me, and he's 9. I speak better Greek than I do Irish, and I learnt that from a tape -  I did Irish 5 times a week for 14 years.

1. Get (back) into the Prog Slog habit, including updating the 2000adopedia as I go.
2. Once my leg is more sorted out (just out of hospital again a few days ago) get down to a healthy weight.
3. Be more creative, maybe contribute to one of the threads on this forum.
4. Organise finances so I a) don't pay interest on student debt, etc and b) get a better rate of interest on savings
5. Keep the flat organised and tidy.

That's one I forgot. I really, really need more free time and a decent social life (I had both in spades before i became a stressed, tired, frequently ill and lonely DYNAMIC, GO-GETTING ENTREPENEUR.)

Tordalback if you have rudimantery understanding of Irish......do you know if (Remembering Hellboy Two!) Nuada's conversation with Balor (His father!) is in Irish

I certainly wouldn't know, because there was no accent as far as I could hear.

Scene (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4liPmQEPEU)

In case anybody is wondering, my favourite part of this film is the Elder-Thing moving into the background at the faerie markets.

As for my N.Y. Resolution, I think I should finish cleaning my room and finally move out!

If you could paste the bit from the movie script I might be able to translate it.  (No guarantees though,  i'm very rusty and was never fluent.)

1: learn to play the guitar.  It's been sitting there since last Xmas, with nought but a couple of chords learned.

2: exercise more.  Regular runs and gym were once a thing, until cake and ...more cake took over.

3: finish and submit more scripts. Focus, dammit!

Reaction time  can be  crucial when driving Hawk so be careful!

Or maybe that's not what you meant by slower cognition.

Make sure you mention it to the instructor anyway. I'm sure they'll advise you.

I never learnt to drive due to the fact that my attention span can sometimes be poor and my mind has a tendency to wander. I had a couple of new misses on a bike as a result, so I don't cycle anymore. I figured if I was in a car and something similar happened, I might end up killing someone!

Not to disuade you. Emergency stops are a major part of tests I think, and if you keep aware of shortcomings I'm sure you can compensate.

This is an example of that over worrying I spoke of earlier that I should probably give up.

I've a few:

Reduce spending to nearly nothing.
Sell off things I haven't used in the last year or more.
Improve my German and French to be fluent.
Read more and spend less time on video games.

These are no doubt a repeat of the last lot. Not much at all! :(

• Find an extra source of income to fill work gaps which occur a few times a year. The gaps can be unnerving and costly. Not sure how I will work that out as I do prioritise work when it comes from one source. And need to do creative work rather than the stuff that just pays the bills. A tall order though.

• Do some work on this house. We've been here two years and it still feels as if we're living in someone else's house. Need to save up to do the serious work, but we need to get the ball rolling and at least do some work that will make it a more pleasant place to live.

• Be more focussed. Sit down, do what I need to do, turn off the computer.

• Go to bed earlier especially on work days.

• Draw. Not draw more. Draw. Start the art comps in good time. Upload what I do draw online.

• As well as the comicy stuff I need to get back into non-comic illustration. Start a blog or something for that.

• Upload a backlog of photos online.

• Make time to see friends.

• Make time for a holiday.

• Stop constantly grazing.

• Do a driving refresher course. Not driving has really held me back. But I reckon it has helped healthwise as I have no choice but to walk a lot.

Making time for fitness activities is one of the few things I do have in order. I do go to the gym once a week (first visit of the year was yesterday) and do martial arts twice a week and depending on work situation some long jogs. Still need to lose some flab though due to the grazing.

Just a reminder that to help you achieve these resolutions it's best to set SMARTobjectives for them.

Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Time Related

E.g  lose weight is a bit vague, look like Arnie is probably not realistic or achievable but I coukd resolve to lose 2 stones between now and my daughter's wedding (as it is a set target and date, I will know how I am tracking against it and if I am achieving it).

Supersurfer, I don't remember having this conversation before. I do Bujinkan anyway, basically ninjutsu if such a thing could be said to exist. To be honest though I haven't trained regularly for years, and have been stuck at the belt before black for about 5 years. Probably deserve to drop a couple too, I'm so rusty.

Tips, thanks for that. Ive heard of SMART goals before but having been reminded will start implementing the system to my resolutions.

Good call - also, avoid having objectives where you have to do something at regular intervals (say every day or week), because if you do miss it just once then you'll be demotivated from that point on.  Allow yourself to miss an objective a few times.  In a perfect world I'd be able to spend time on resolution-y kinds of things every day, but I know that outside of work and meeting up with friends I'll have about twenty minutes free at home each day for tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday (such a social butterfly, me).  Tuesday I'll probably be spending time tidying the flat for that Wednesday social engagement (first in about a month).  I've not even looked at what's coming up on Friday and the weekend.  I suspect I'll be missing things so that I can have a rest.

Ok. Hadn't heard of that. Looked it up. Very intriguing.

As for my resolutions, I haven't properly worked out what I can do differently to last year to stick to them this time round. Other than be someone else. Seriously though, I will consider those Tiplodocus tips. Thanks for that.

I need to redefine my goals into SMART objectives as Tiplodocus says, but plans are as follows:

Loose a few pound (actually more like 1.5-2 stone)

Cut down on the booze (will probably help the above)

Improve my workflow for drawing comics. I feel I am taking to long per page, with a not very well defined workflow for the steps I take from idea to finished page.

Improve my planning and scheduling for comics so it is not a last minute rush.

If both above work then this should allow me to enter every monthly art comp, and also draw more for my own benefit and pleasure.

Possibly set up a blog, or at the least regularly update my Deviantart and FB page with all new doodlings and scribblings.

Spend less!

I am sure there are more that will come to me, but most will be tied into the above in some way.

Wasn't going to do resolutions (haven't done for years) but found myself with some realistic goals going into the New Year...

1) Reach target weight on Slimming World (only a matter of time, but if I'm a bit more diligent, I'll get there sooner rather than later).

2) Observe an extra 'dry' night each week (with attendant positive implications for 1, and my blood pressure).

3) Hand letter something for actual publication. I've been practising, and I've got all the kit.

Cheers!

Jim

Keep up with physio for my shoulder, even when it seems to make things worse rather than better. Once the shoulder is a bit better, get back to push-ups and so on.

Get to running around Richmond Park without stopping by June.

Learn how to play my harmonica (last year's christmas present) by next Christmas, at least one tune.

Get a game of D&D going on the regular (looks like my last game is going to fizzle out :( :( DM isn't really responding to anyone's messages. Oh well.)

Fix my bike up so it works - end of February.

Oh & read more books and stop getting lost in the timesinks of the web on my various devices just because they are backlit and can be read whilst the missus slumbers.

So, how are we all getting on with these then?

Quote from: The Cosh on 02 January, 2016, 07:44:04 PM
- Talk more German better.
Hmm. Greater perseverance during interactions with retail and service personnel, including discussing my ailments in the chemist and left luggage on the train.
Failed to go and see a foreign film with German subtitles (but only because it was sold out.)
Went to a football pub quiz in German. Came last.

Verdict: More? Probably. Better? Probably not.

Quote from: The Cosh on 02 January, 2016, 07:44:04 PM
- Read fewer comics. Haven't finished an actual book for two or three months.
A lot of series I was reading came to an end over the last month so I've been giving them a reread and I've bought about 8,000 pages of crap in varous humble bundles.
Made it halfway through The Narrow Road to the Deep North.

Verdict: Not going well.

Quote from: The Cosh on 02 January, 2016, 07:44:04 PM
- Get off my arse and go snowboarding at least every second weekend between now and April.
Including this weekend coming, it'll be 2/5.

Verdict: borderline. Need to get out of bed on a few Sunday mornings.

I haven't done much yet, but I did write the first way-too-long draft of a story for the short story competition. I need pare it down to third its current length to make it fit the 500 words specified.

There's a whole chunk of stuff at the start which can be chopped off easily but the rest might be difficult... but fun.....

I will probably have a lengthier version I'll put in a blogg later after the competition. I need to get back I to Editting sharpish before my story idea is used up.

Quote2. Make more effort concerning things I'd like to change in my life.

I guess resolution 1 is a small step in that direction. I am also strongly considering moving in with a housemate in a few months time... but other than that I haven't done much.

Quote3. Control my emotions a bit more.
Better, lately in some ways but very much a work in progress.

Quote4. Stop worrying so much!

I recently got worse then better...

So not much changed really. But kinda proud I made headway on that story, even if its a new story rather than completing ones.

That's all I can think of for the moment.  Yourselves?

1. Hmmmmmm, well, let's not go too deeply into that one... haven't given up the search yet though; not by a long way.

2.  Yes, unbelievably.  First time in over 20 years I've been out of debt.

3.  Not yet.

4.  Next month, I think.  I've already booked a room; just need to sort out my advertising.

5.  Martial arts yes; gym no.  (On the downside I cracked a rib on my first time back training a couple of weeks ago; I'm still going though.  Just training very gently at the moment.)

6.  Most mornings anyway.

Another one I added was to have much more time to myself; and due to my having my own transport these days, there's been a vast improvement there.  In fact I've worked out a way of making time go more slowly - basically do lots of different and new things all the time; even if it's just having a coffee in a village I don't normally go to; or going for walks in an area I've never visited before.

I've been listening to a seminar by Marc Allen lately who recommends spoken affirmations; so I'm giving it a shot.  He's a bit of a spaced-out old hippy (albeit a very rich and successful one) who attributes his success to magic and God; for me though the affirmations are just a way of constantly reminding myself of my priorities (and I generally say them a few times a day while I'm driving).  Are they working?  Well, it's only been a few weeks, so I don't really know, but I'm noticing some small improvements in my life.  The practice has also inspired me to add a whole new set of goals to the existing ones (for better or worse).

1. Keep up with physio for my shoulder, even when it seems to make things worse rather than better. Once the shoulder is a bit better, get back to push-ups and so on.

2. Get to running around Richmond Park without stopping by June.

3. Learn how to play my harmonica (last year's christmas present) by next Christmas, at least one tune.

4. Get a game of D&D going on the regular (looks like my last game is going to fizzle out :( :( DM isn't really responding to anyone's messages. Oh well.)

5. Fix my bike up so it works - end of February.

6. Oh & read more books and stop getting lost in the timesinks of the web on my various devices just because they are backlit and can be read whilst the missus slumbers.

1. Kind of - had cosmetic surgery (cyst) on my neck a few weeks ago, haven't done the exercises since for fear of pulling something loose as it was on the very top of my spine. Started again last night.

2. Not sure if I've got there yet - have to push myself next weekend and see.

3. Drokk. Going to have to get moving on that.

4. My D&D game fizzled out :( I played a few drop-ins at the local game store in between and thoroughly enjoyed but a holiday and random acts of inconvenience have kept me away for about 2 months now. 8 sessions later I doubt I can drop back in again. I will return though.

5. Done! Did it early Feb. Now the bloody cones are loose on the back wheel though and the gears are slipping again. Fixing it this weekend.

6. Read plenty this year so far, including all of Joe Lansdale's books I coudl get hold of.

Doing ok actually!
