Can anyone help me out with a something that is bugging me at the moment.
I was in the pub the other night with a couple of like minded friends. The subject got on to 2000ad artists who had worked or started on other British comics.
We recalled all the great John Burns artwork in Look-In on "The Tomorrow People" and Arthur Ransom's work on "Sapphire and Steel". Then my friend Pete reminded us that John Burns had also drawn a strip based on "The Tripods" for the BBC's short-lived rival to Look-In (called BEEB (?) we think).
We then spent the next hour (plus numerous hours over the last couple of days) desperately trying to remember any other strip from "BEEB". We reckon that they all must have been pretty dire if we can't remember a single one of them, but its still bugging the hell out of us at the moment.
Can anyone remember any and put us out of our misery?
Cheers
Yup, it was called BEEB. Never heard of it meself, but apparently there was a Grange Hill strip (natch) and a thing about a zoo vet called One By One, alongside The Tripods. Hope that helps :)
Cor Blimey!
I remember Beeb, in fact I used to get it (around the same time that I used to get *ahem* Smash Hits, and just prior to getting 2000ad IIRC) There was also a magazine called TV Tops (I still have one of these, with Metal Mickey in it, and IIRC a feature on the kid band that sung "Pass The Duche (sp?)").
Anyway, back to the Beeb... even though I remember getting it, I can't rember anything about it. There must be a website dedicated to it somewhere. Have you done a google-search for it?
Sorry, Dane. Couldn't find any dedicated pages, just a few cursory mentions on TV nostalgia type sites :(
(Heh!..
Smash Hits!)
Link: Mausoleum Club listing for Beeb's Tripod strip
From 'British Telefantasy in Comics' by Andrew Pixley (Time Screen 21, Spring 1995):
"At the start of 1985, the BBC and Polystyle Publications attempted to launch a comic that would grab the Look-In market and act as a replacement for TV Comic. The result was Beeb - The BBC Junior Television Magazine, with Issue 1 dated 29th January - 4th February 1985 and Dennis Hooper in the editorial seat. In amongst the articles, pin-ups and profiles could be found comic strips based on Automan, One by One, Grange Hill and the BBC's SF adventure serial, The Tripods... Unfortunately, Beeb fared very badly and vanished without a trace after Issue 13 (23rd - 29th April 1985) was published. Plans for an annual of The Tripods were aborted with some artwork already produced."
The Tripods strip was "possibly by Pat Mills" btw.
I seem to recall an interview with Pat Mills were he said he was doing the Grange Hill strip - wonder what they were like...?
'I seem to recall an interview with Pat Mills were he said he was doing the Grange Hill strip - wonder what they were like...?'
Ohhh...!
No, don't tempt me...

Hmmm...
"No, don't tempt me..."
Must resist...but the pull...is too strong...
GRANGE HILL by PAT MILLS
Alan Hargreaves: Wotcha Tucker! Whatcha bin up to then?
Peter "Tucker" Jenkins: I've been doing detention again. Old "Bullet" Baxter caught me weeing in Sooty Sutcliffes briefcase.
Alan Hargreaves: Yeah that's typical of teachers. They want to repress us and destroy our individual personalities so that we become passive and docile, that way it's easier for the Government to control us.
Peter "Tucker" Jenkins: Government? Leave it out dimbo. Everybody knows the Government are really the puppet servants of a secret shadow alien species who are farming us like cattle.
Alan Hargreaves Flippin eck Tucker!
You may laugh, but you know it's true.

The scene: Shedcon 2
"Excuse us, Mister Sheard. Um, we did these 2000AD scripts with you in mind. Wanna act them out with us?"
"Why, I'd be delighted to, dear boy."
The horror.. the horror..
'The scene: Shedcon 2
"Excuse us, Mister Sheard'
You mean Sheard is doing a con? Everybody should check that out at once- chances are it's his only one this year.
aren't I funny...?
Have to change the name to SheardCon then.
Its been worrying me for some time now, but the continuity of the above scripts has really UPSET ME! Zammo never actually visted the bog in any eposide, and when he did use any weapons it was always silver tipped BULLETS from a AK47, i REALLY wish you lot would pay attention and do some SERIOUS RESEARCH before putting fingers to keybaords. Thankfully the West bikeshed has not been mentioned as this was only BUILT AFTER Phil Redmond's death at the hand of the Daleks, which he deserved as he STOLE my ideas,I'm SERIOUS you know.
