Just got the preview copy today and this volume is looking just as good as the first. Can not wait to see more of the adventures of the original Kyle Dixon and the missing referee Nigel Bull.

A big thank you to Dan for the quick posting of the comic and such wonderful artwork

Bump for anyone still not decided - Rok has just around 25% funding so far but the drop off is happening so if you were wavering over picking this up - don't.

Go get it and make Rok a happy space man!
: Re: Rok the God Kickstarter
: jabish 04 October, 2019, 10:09:46 AM
I concur. Get in there big time. I've pledged and while its slowing a bit there is still a good bit of time left! If you haven't read the first book the £40 pledge for both books is SO worth it. Just brilliant comics. If ya have read it and liked it then hop on the £20 pledge for book 2. Don't wait for it to come out cos it may not if you don't pledge.

There's a ways to go but outside of the people who have already backed there must be a thousand 2000ad fans that would go for either the one or two book pledge.

Am I completely mad in thinking that it would be generous of rebellion to give the guys an Ad in the prog free gratis? After all John Wagner has done quite a bit for them and comics in general over the years.

Get in the back of the net! Give em a pledge.

Rebellion drawing attention to this would be a nice gesture. Hard to know how viable that would be within the 27 days left of the Kickstarter (what with magazine lead times). If not an ad, then something on the Input page, perhaps?

: Re: Rok the God Kickstarter

Crowdfunders are odd. A lot of people now wait until the end. That said, a good rule of thumb is usually to get about a third or more funded on day one, expecting you’ll get about the same in the last few days, and pick up the rest in the middle. Fingers crossed, though. I’ve backed, despite my general dislike of softcovers these days.

Wow the Kickstarter got a real boost as someone - or a company you'd assume - have popped for the top level reward and will be the sponsers of Radford Reds which had thrown the Kickstarter towards the half way mark. Would love to know who and hopefully we'll find out soon enough.

Trouble is this might mask a little the rapidly dwindling number of other backer at lower tiers. Its interesting over on another thread there's a link to a Kickstarter from Etherington Brothers and they have smashed it after 4 days and are at the £72,000+ mark after a similar time. The majority of the Etherington's is a load of £75 backers after two hardcovers. Now I have no idea how these things work and they are very different products - Etherington's is a how to write and draw comics package - but two Kickstarters from two sets of very talented comic folks and two very different outcomes to date. I wonder if there are differences in how the Etherington's go about marketing these things, or is it just that backers what something that feels special like a hardcover - though of course that changes the amount you need to raise...
: Re: Rok the God Kickstarter
: Steve Green 06 October, 2019, 09:23:43 AM
Yeah, I wouldn't read too much into the top tier thing.

Honestly, I don't know - if it was pure football or pure sci-fi, it might be an easier sell.

I don't know what sites have reported on it - I guess a facebook ad might get a bit more reach and doesn't cost *that* much.

It's been posted on few 2000 AD and facebook groups, but I imagine the bigger ones like what used to be the make a Dredd sequel page or the Judge Dredd group is mainly people who really aren't interested in anything not Dredd, and football especially.

I've put links to it on our fan film pages, links to it on the Minty and SD youtube video pages (and the videos themselves)

Will give it another push, but think it's a horse to water thing really.

Shame, if a small fraction of the people on either the 2000 AD fb page or the Sequel/MC-1 page gave a quid as a donation as a thanks to John and Alan in particular, it would hit it easily.

Must admit that was my first thought. As you say we'll see.
: Re: Rok the God Kickstarter
: IndigoPrime 06 October, 2019, 11:53:08 AM
Didn’t John say there was interest from Rebellion in the property at one point, but then they bought Roy of the Rovers? Or perhaps I’m misremembering. Anyway, water/bridge.

As for Kickstarters, a lot of it is about impression these days – how much something looks like it’s going to succeed. I was tangentially involved in one recently that went right down to the wire. But because it didn’t look like it would succeed, people were pulling back from putting down cash, even though you lose nothing if it doesn’t meet the target. (This isn’t an open Indiegogo!) In the end, it blazed past the finish line and beyond, although imp part because one backer put down a ton of cash.

So perhaps this injection is just what’s needed. You’d hope a Kickstarter of this sort would be knocking around the 50% mark at this point, and it is. That it’s only got 144 backers seems odd to me, but there you go, not least given that there’s the option to get both books at the £40 tier.

Yep. John Wagner doing a Kickstarter should be a no-brainer, but... football. Even mickey-take sci-fi football. (And yeah, I read the first issue of Rok - it was good, very Doomlord, in fact, so I'm not doubting the quality.)

Seconded. It's weird to see universal creaming over Wagner's masterful storytelling in the prog review thread then head here and discover he and Alan Grant can't convince us* to send them 6 grand each.

I would say the first issue of the first series is a bit finding its feet/setup - I'm not a football fan, and I was sceptical - I really enjoyed it though.

I've mentioned Doomlord too, it could be worth trying to find a way to get that lapsed Eagle reader market.

Good man. Wagner just announced the new shirt sponsors will be Laser Tools (https://www.lasertools.co.uk). Not sure if they make tools that are lasers or tools for making lasers, but feel I should support them anyway.

John Wagner and the Rok team have made a preview of the second original graphic novel available for free:

It's a fun and funny story that's much more like Hamlet (or Thor) with spaceships than Escape To Victory. I counted one mention of footie; the rest is split between an alien planet and two shrunken characters having hilarious Borrowers adventures.

You have ever right in ever OTHER circumstance to enact your freewill and do and spend your hard earned cash as you please. In this instance if you can you should ... or  you might make John Wagner cry... do you want to make John Wagner cry? Do you?

Picking up momentum and if folks who have already backed are like myself and thinking of adding some adds on that will boost further.

Just 4 days left.

As Colin says, anyone seeing the new rewards that have been added and regretting they've already made a miserly pledge needn't worry. John Wagner says if you go for one of the higher band rewards he'll deduct your shamefully low-ball initial bid from the total.

We can probably trust him not to run off with the cash and blow it all on alpacas.

The new rewards just added include the Bolland cover variant mentioned above, A3 prints by Bolland and Bisley, an exclusive A3 poster by Rok God Bisley, a bespoke A4 or A3 sketch by Judge Dredd artist Dan Cornwell (any subject), a page of original Judge Dredd art, and a genuine Judge Dredd script by his creator, John Wagner.

Get one of those or all of those, in any combination. Just get yourself over to the Kickstarter:

3 DAYS LEFT TO GO

You wouldn’t think a new comic by John Wagner & Alan Grant, the duo who wrote Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog and almost every other British comic strip you enjoyed in the eighties, would be a hard sell.

Yet with the Kickstarter to fund the second original graphic novel of Rok the Arkadian’s adventures closing on Thursday (31st October), the big red alien’s currently falling just short of the target Wagner, Grant & artist Dan Cornwell set themselves.

There’s only one reason for that - FOOTBALL!  What should be the book’s strongest selling point turns out to be a handicap when persuading the core nerd constituency who back Kickstarter projects that Rok’s for them.

That perception problem persuaded the Kim Kardashian of 2000ad fandom, John Burdis - a social media influencer with a big arse - to produce a video explaining that Rok is a story about an alien, rather than a story about football:

https://youtu.be/Q9-c8tXwmrI

Readers who overcame their memories of being picked last at PE and took the plunge into the first series were delighted to find Rok has more in common with Wagner & Grant’s Doomlord work for Eagle than Roy Of The Rovers.

For legal reasons I can’t suggest that Rok’s a backdoor reboot of Doomlord, but it’s a backdoor reboot of Doomlord

The preview comic Wagner & Grant released of Book 2 (available here (https://www.dropbox.com/s/ymf73g5lyx1uata/ROK_the_God_FREE_PREVIEW_CHAPTER.pdf?dl=0)) shows this story in particular has more in common with something like Thor, with Rok reluctantly returning to his homeworld only to learn his queen is abdicating, putting him in the firing line of the various rivals to succeed her and take the throne.

Thor: RagnaROK - or King Lear meets The Hunger Games

While Rok’s outer space adventures provide the A-story, like every good episode of The Simpsons, there’s a hilarious B-story unfolding in parallel that threatens to upstage it. Rok’s departure has left his Earth-alter-ego, Kyle Dixon, and pain in the arse Nigel shrunk to the size of Action Men and stranded in the woods.

Land Of The Giants action as Kyle & Nige fight their way out of a dogging spot armed with toothpicks and work out how to use
a smartphone bigger than they are

Kyle and Nige’s Borrowers adventures in a landscape littered with Walkers crisp packets Gary Lineker left lying around and their comedy squabbling are the highlight of this book, with the revelation of Nige’s marital problems and his unfaithful wife’s cruel indifference to his plight especially funny.

It’s a story that would fit into classic 2000ad or eighties Eagle, and it’s one that you owe it to yourself to check out. But that won’t happen unless the Kickstarter meets its target by Thursday (31st October). Luckily, Wagner & Grant have provided plenty of rewards to make your decision to back the Kickstarter easy.

They include an edition of the book with a variant cover by the legendary Brian Bolland, A3 prints by Bolland and Rok God Simon Bisley, an exclusive A3 poster by Bisley, a bespoke A4 or A3 sketch by Judge Dredd artist Dan Cornwell (of any character).

Here’s a preview of the Brian Bolland cover, which the superstar artist was kind enough to share as a work in progress:

Me So Horny: If you know Brian Bolland, you’ll know his cover won’t be finished any time soon, but it’ll be absolutely perfect

You can buy the second book by itself or double up with a combo that’ll let you catch up with Rok’s first adventure before diving into the sequel. Further rewards include a page of original Judge Dredd art and a genuine Judge Dredd script by his creator, John Wagner.

To get one or all of those rewards, in any combination. Just get yourself over to the Kickstarter:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wagnerrok/rok-the-god

and, while you're there, get the free 22-page preview comic:

You can help two of the greatest creators in UK comics finish the story they want to tell on their own terms and experience a truly original comic that spans the cosmos and every level of reality, from the microscopic to the monumental and truly intergalactic.

With less than 48 hours left to go to the end of the Rok Kickstarter and a few thousand still to be raised, it'd be great if we could turn the 2000ad and Dredd-themed Facebook groups into a sea of Rok avatars.

Show your support and create awareness in the same way you do whenever a tragedy happens, except this time you'll (hopefully) be helping something good happen!

Thanks to Dan for his great art. Remember to include a link to the Rok Kickstarter when Facebook automatically posts your change of avatar on your timeline:

If you're a real Rok jihadi, Dan's also created this cover banner for your home page:

LET'S GET BREXIT ROK DONE

I've backed it.

One thing - I think it would have been better not to have a digital version and lowered the price of the printed version a bit.

I've backed it.

The print version costs what it costs. Having a cheaper digital version has no real bearing on the cost of the print version, just offers a cheaper option to those who might not have the money for the physical book.

I've backed it.

Good man! An endorsement or genuine testimonial's better than a thousand words of PR blurb:

Good man! An endorsement or genuine testimonial's better than a thousand words of PR blurb:

Thank you, Frank, and apologies to Sinx for my rather brusque reply — I'm currently trying to do a day's work and fix an uncooperative laptop at the same time!

No excuse, though — thanks, Sinx. To clarify my original point: the price of the print edition is as cheap a quote as we could find and includes a substantial overprint so that 1) John and Dan will have copies to sell once the campaign concludes, and 2) to drive the unit cost of the print run down as much as possible (ie: to make the book as cheap as we can).

If we sold twice as many physical copies through the Kickstarter, it wouldn't change the cost of the print run…

Just upped my pledge to include the new Rok team kit. Remember folks if you have pledged already you can top up to add some lovely extras.

We can make this happen!

I can only see an option to "change your pledge" rather than add to it - I originally went for the £40 pledge and a few weeks ago I decided I was willing to add the £45 pledge for the extras and sell on the duplicate book, but the site doesn't seem to allow you to pick more than one pledge.

still, it now says "£28,188 pledged of £28,000 goal" so wayhey, we did it!

Beat me to it Dan just seen other Dan's post - WAYHEY there was a £3000 burst at the end there - FANTASTIC!

Well done all and of course particularly John and Dan.

EDIT - and Alan, Jim and Abbey of course!

I've seen both John and Dan say just add to your existing Pledge and they sort it at the 'survey' stage - don't know what that is so I just added to my current pledge and assume it sorts at the back end.

Surveys out today!

I went for the 'Commission me a Dan' pledge. You can ask for add-ons if you missed out during the campaign.

Cheers

With apologies if ayone has seen this on Facebook already but I got my new Radford Reds kit today and so dug out photos of my very first kit a classic cotton number from those heady days of the 80s, all poodle rock and Pat Sharpe. Man I must get around to doing the kitchen some day, hasn't changes a bit since the 80s, like a day hasn't past...

Mine arrived today, so that was this evening taken care of. It's fantastic!

I already collected my kickstarter reward at thought bubble last year, but it was nice to find a free sticker and cool keyring/LED torch included (courtesy of Laser ToolsTM - now that's what I call a shirt sponsorship!). I almost threw this out with the packaging.

Great story, great art, what can I say? I'm preaching to the choir here. There's a sports reporter I'm sure I've heard of, and loads of familiar names in the 'thank you' list (Karen Berger? wow), including my favourite: "That guy that writes the letters to 2000ad" - well done Tom!

All this, and the collected wisdom of Kevin Keegan too.

It smells GLORIOUS. I read the first part last night and it's terrfic. I have no idea why it hasn't found a wider audience yet, it deserves to.
I backed at a reward level to get some Dan Cornwell Dredd art too - still awaiting that but excited to see what shows up.

Thanks - I hadn’t noticed the sticker. It was embedded inside the book. Nor had I realised the key ring had a torch embedded, but to be fair I hadn’t really looked at it.

Mine popped through the door today. Sooo looking forward to this as I really liked the 1st volume.

I agree I’m also surprised this has needed a kickstarter to get a 2nd volume.
However I’d support another one (if the end has been open ended)

Hadn't twigged on the sticker - found in amongst the pages. Nice touch!

Not gonna lie — it was a struggle getting this one across the finish line. We could have been a bit savvier about the social media push, but it’s mildly depressing that Rok struggled to make £20K when the Tank Girl KS a few years back made north of £175K.

I read the first chapter and this is great fun.  Great story so far and I must say that the art works great with the story. Great lettering as well Jim.

The difference in those figures is unreal. As you said maybe the social media word is the key thing. I still would have thought the love for the creators within the tooth world would have made it a wee bit easier to sell

Finished this and I thoroughly enjoyed the continued story line & great art.  I hope there is enough interest in the sales post Kickstarter so they can do 3rd volume 🤞🏻.
I’d even support another kickstarter if they went down that road.
