I mean, how hard can this be?
I live in Britain, but my agent is based in Canada and sources work worldwide. Now if my agent offers me a job from a company based in Canada, it's priced up in Canadian dollars (CAD). If it's from the U.S., it's priced up in U.S. dollars (USD)- and if it's from Britain, pounds sterling (GBP). With me so far?
When I bill the agent for the work, it's always in the currency of the country that the work has been sourced from. Once the agent has collected the money, it's converted to pounds sterling (unless the work originated in Britain and then I just get whatever it was originally worth- obviously) and I get a check (hurrah!).
Now for those of you who don't know, the exchange rate for GBP and CAD is about half (two Canadian dollars for every pound) and for the sake of making things a bit less confusing- I'm only going to be referring to pounds and Canadian dollars from this point on.
By and large, a job sourced in Britain that's worth ?1000 would probably be worth $1000 if originally sourced in Canada.
So anyway- I just got off the phone to my Dad, almost incredulous at the fact I could have sprung from the loins of anyone so stupid.
I happened to mention in passing that I was doing a job for a place in Canada and that they were paying (for the sake of simplicity) $1000, which is only worth about ?500 to me after the currency conversion. I then went on to wonder how great it must be to be living in Canada and getting a job from Britain, because the reverse would also be true. Instead of getting paid $500, after the currency conversion, you'd get $2000- double what the same job would be worth had it been sourced in Canada.
Could I get my dopey Dad to see what I was talking about?
Could I f-
Uh?
That is a little confusing... Dont you mean $1000 not $2000?
$500 doubled is $1000 surely?
And if the ammount is the same what does it matter how big the number is?
Also: Leave your poor dad alone! I've known worse dumbo's than him...
J.
My dad was living in spain once upon a time in his youth. When he was returning home to britain he withdrew all his money from the local spanish bank and set off to catch his boat. However, he realised he was going to miss his boat and started running and promptly fell down a large hole. Which was just as well because he had left all his money on the desk in the bank.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
Aheh...
Blimey Jared- you're worse than my Dad! let's just pretend for a second that all jobs everywhere are priced at 1000 (whether it be dollars, pounds or donuts).
A rough Canadian/UK conversion is 2 to 1
So if I accept a job from the UK at 1000, I get paid 1000
If I accept a job from Canada at 1000, I get paid 500
Now... If I was living in Canada, and did a job also from Canada for 1000, I would be paid 1000.
If I lived in Canada and did a job from the UK for 1000, I would be paid 2000.
Get it now? Basically, I ought to live in Canada and demand that all my work comes from the UK- that way I get paid twice as much for the same amount of work!
Matt
Heh. That *is* pretty dumb...
Cost of livings high though.
Also to live in Canada the cost of living is cheaper the airs cleaner and your nearest neighbour isnt gonna invade anytime soon :-)
yer " I nearly immegrated to Canada before deciding on Bournemouth" Slippo
So are all jobs worth the same ammount regardless of currency?
e.g. they pay more worth in Canada then the UK does.
How many CDs can you buy for $1000 & how many can you buy for ?1000?
'How many CDs can you buy for $1000 & how many can you buy for ?1000?'
Lots.
WoD
No- and I guess it does average out as the rates are generally higher in Canada and the US than they are here and most of my jobs tend to end up being worth between six and eight hundred quid at the end of the day- no matter where they've originated from.
It's still better to do British work from out of Canada though- lucky buggers!
Matt
Anyway- just how dumb *is* your Dad?
Well mine took a job with the military at the beginning of March...
(But he's way too old & not trained at all to go off to actual war - he's QM at the local cadet school)
Eyebrows, your dad's dumber than my dad.

Sadly, your Troutyness- you are correct. That said, I've asked a number of people about this today- and it would seem that the poor old duffer is far from alone in his mental meanderings!
What's worse is that I only rang him to wish him a happy birthday! I think it fair to say that he was quite unhappy by the time the call had ended...
Matt
"your dad's dumber than my dad"
By which I mean - my dad lives in Canada and understands exchange rates.
Which is proof positive that, on at least one issue, he's a bit more clued up than Eyebrows senior.
;-)

i nearly buggered off to canada too, i couldnt get housing ( story of life ,
holiday home owning bastishes) in home village, & really fancied the freedom of building a log hut in middle of gruddamn no-where ,
no landowner toffs & planning gits to stop me.
the food is cheap, the weather proof outdoor wear & guns are cheap,
the big battered double cab pick ups are cheap. my folks were out in newfoundland with work at the time.
the scenery is great, like this (cal-hab north) but bigger , colder & dryer;
Then i realised there was no book shops, no deep rooted culture, no comix, no artists, no music scene.. just red neck tarten shirt wearing hell. again like here....
you want dumb
my father and a bunch of work mates go on a four junket trip to some GREEK island.they had for the last year saved 10 quid each, every week for the spending money to be pooled.
two of them go to thomas cook and take the money to change it the local currency and travellers cheques.
they changed it to pestas as in SPANISH MONEY.
no one noticed their error until they tried to pay the taxi driver upon arrival at the villa.
you have really got to wonder.
