Title: 2000AD Forum Sketch Competition #2: ENTRIES THREAD
Post by: Jim_Campbell on 06 March, 2021, 10:55:13 AM
It's time! Show us your arts, fellow Squaxx!

The theme this month is REGENED.

As last month's winner, Colin YNWA explains:

QuoteRegened - its been all the buzz of 2000ad social media. We love it. We hate it. Now we create it. Regene your favourite character by reimagining them as they would be created in a new all ages comic. Regene your favourite cover, regene ... something completely new that would fit into the Regene issues... which isn't regening is it, its just gening... but you get the idea. Do something, do anything, that would look in place in the current regened issues.

Remember, you don't have to just do a younger version of an existing character — you can come up with something entirely new, or an all-ages/YA spin on your favourite strip. Manga Nemesis? Hookjaw in the style of Bone? Durham Red as a Powerpuff Girl?

You've had a week to get your thinking caps on, now you have one week to get your sketches in.

You can render your entries in the medium of your choice, and you can enter as many times as you want, but please don't spend more than 45 minutes on each sketch.*

There will be a GLITTERING PRIZE for the winning entry. As well as getting to choose the theme for Sketch Comp #3, the winner will receive a randomly selected graphic novel from my Terrifyingly Tall Mountain of Comps™.

Have at it, folks!

*Abandoned attempts don't count, so you can take as many stabs at getting an idea right as you need, and no one is standing over you with a stopwatch, but the 45 minutes starts when pencil/pen/crayons/fingers hit paper on the version you want to submit.

Just to get you started, here's a (not entirely serious) sketch from me. A whisker under thirty minutes, brushpen and Letraset Promarkers for colour.

Think you're onto a winner there Jim!

This is the best I could do in 45 mins, I'm afraid...

Apologies for crap quality - I'll try and get a scan done later.

Amazing work all round.  Sharky, I haven't drawn in biro for years - but looking at your work, I intend to do so soon, if not for this compo then for the next.

EDIT - the links on your second post aren't working for me, I'm afraid.

Thanks man :)

I'll definitely be doing more work on this - First time I've tried drawing AG and it's great fun! Such a wonderful design!
Also, I truly do think that if he's gonna return it should be in ReGened. Match made in heaven IMHO :)

Yes. Just right-click an image once it's uploaded to Imgur and 'Open in new window'. Copy the url at the top of new window, and paste between the IMG tags here — at least, that's what I do.

Shark - updated the post for you.

and now my effort - drawing took 20 min, then the rest was digital tomfoolery.

I'm now thinking of a one-page strip in a Cor! stylee for this.

OK, here's my first! Spent way too long on rough pass so even final version is rough.
There was lots of scope for robo-mons but I just didn't get there.
Also: couldn't decide if Sam should be young or old.

Thanks Bolt-1 & Jayzuz, I know the Prog has courier concepts already but I couldn't resist this pun. Now thinking the titular company should be up against Deliverool as competitors. Plucky indie takeaways facing down the big guys.

Why change a winning formula!

That says 'Evil Grandmaster Penguin' at the bottom - yes I was running out of taime badly for the lettering!

Another Phoenix rip off - this time the fantastic Laura Ellen Anderson's 'Evil Empire Penguin'. Four books available now.

Here's another centred around a boy with a prosthetic arm, his struggles against his own family, the prejudices of others and his own temper.

Couldn't quite bring myself to draw a lad with both arms missing.

Thanks guys - it's nice to be back!

Squirrel Girl was exactly the vibe I had in my head, despite not really knowing anything about the character. As for time, I surprised myself a bit by actually managing to finish (even though there's a few bits I desperately want to redraw). It worked out 5 minutes for the under-sketch, 20 minutes for 'inking', 20 for colour and general fiddling.

Just giving this thread a quick bump back up the page to mark mid-week. Remember, you have until close of play Friday to get your entries in, although I could be persuaded to leave it open over the weekend if anyone was thinking they might get an entry in by then...

Last call for entries! If anyone thinks they might get something done over the weekend, shout up and I'll keep the thread open until Monday. Otherwise, this comp will close to entries at midnight tonight (Friday).*

*Although I'm old and crap and probably won't be up at midnight, so it'll really be Saturday morning.

First time sketcher here, made use of references (and with apologies to Peanuts, and art in general).

I call this "The A.B.C.s" (which is on a whiteboard behind them):

*My imagination had RJ dressed in greens, and HS dressed in lighter oranges. Plus, I had another five planned out:
- JP, in shades and with a slingshot, possibly with some subtle element of cross-dressing.
- M - a big, brawny, angry looking kid, asian, carrying a length of chain.
- MoMo - a black girl with dreads and nunchuks
- MQ - a kid in a wheelchair, with a demented leer, carrying a large Transformers toy, but in pieces
- DL - a kid with one crutch and an eye patch, with a laptop under his good arm

Like it! I always like a bit of old skool blue pen doodling on copybook - brings back fond memories, it's all I ever did at my, er, old skool. Would love to see the rest of the characters realised but 45 minutes for 7 characters is a huge ask.

Damn I love this competition. This is not what I had planned, but woke up this morning (got myself a gun... no hold on) and thought "Actually 'Ape in a Spacesuit' would work for the sketch comp."

And so for the first time in well over 10 years I drew the star of my very own comicbook.

Well I printed about 200 (I think it was) copies of the 'Ape in a Spacesuit' Demo issue 1 for Bristol... 2008 (when that was the major comic con) I think it was, to give away so I could find an artist to work with. I still have about 50 left I think. So a heck of a lot of folks to answer your question! I literally could not give this stuff away!

Mind to be fair it wasn't very good at all! But loved doing it and the experience and its been a joy drawing Jae Gould again (he's the Ape) - its made me want to redo the story and comic again. Oh for the time!

The beauty of this style is that there's almost no pencilling and very little inking — just the basic lines and then another pass to add a little weight. I'm using the ProMarkers basically because, unlike my enormous collection of Copics, I only have about eighteen, so I'm forced to not fanny about and use what I've got rather than thinking "I'm sure one of these fifteen other shades of green would work better for that grass than the one in my hand..."

This and something I've really observed in my entry this time is going to help shape how I approach my entry next time. I've been doing things the wrong way round... come on folks get a move on let's get this voting done as I'm hackering for inspiration for next time already as I got something else I want to try...

Now counting the milliseconds until this is re-posted on Facepalm (followed by the amazing logic-hole rebuttal of "if criticism is bad why are we being criticized") and then obsessively, defensively referenced ad nauseam for the next twelve months and somehow it'll all be Rennie's fault.

To be fair, though - I don't actually get the joke. Sorry. (Is it that Joko-Jargo is trolling them?)
