Title: Techno geeks, got any warnings? (I'm thinking of reformatting my hard drive)
Post by: ukdane on 19 April, 2003, 05:06:46 PM
As the title says,
I'm thinking of reformatting my hard drive.
I've already made backup copies of my email addresses, and emails.
Anybody got any other hints and tips, or run into any problems, when reformatting their own hard drives?

its getting all the up to date drivers loaded again thats always been a ballache for me, and there will be loads of stuff you will forget you had or wanted til a few weeks down the line when its long gone. I'd reformat with a partition for backing up files so next you have a handy place to store stuff

apart from everything that test has said, I always make 2 partitions.  a 4gb (minimum) space for your OS (operating System) and a second volume of the same size for storage of data.  My documents, profile settings etc.  Basically it means if yer c: drive goes you still have yer data and all you hae to do is reload all the programs.

Slight disclaimer if yer Hard drive fails all will be lost, so regularly back up data....

As long as you've got everything you need to get your OS back up & running, the important bit is your internet connection.

If you can get online, you can always download any other drivers you may have forgotten.

I'm actually running 2 hard drives, my C: is about 40GB and my D: is about 5GB.
I use my C: for the OS and all the programs, and the D for storing all my "needs to be kept safe data". I also make (quarterly) backups of the MOST vital things from my D and C drives.

In fact, I think I've sorted everything out now, back-up wise,  so if you don't see or hear from me over the next few days, you'll know everythings gone tits up!
