Title: Free the 2000ad One!!!
Post by: Matt on 17 January, 2002, 11:14:48 PM
A gross miscarriage of justice has happened within the very pages of 2000ad. Imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit, Ace Garp has been left to drift the cosmos with no chance of parole. Demand that action be taken ASAP to free the 2000ad one! let your voices be heard. Together we can make a difference!

Face it Matt, Ace has no more aces up his sleeve.

He is croakside big time!

A one way ticket to lug buddy limbo.

Etc etc.

I think for Ace and his boys, there was a time and a place.....and I think it was waaaaaay back then.

I wouldnt mind seeing a one-off wrap up story tho'. Poor guy, floating off in that cell, his mates all deserted him. Perhaps he could be picked up by a Justice Dept ship? And then GBH (Dead) and the alternate Ace, and all the others could stumble across Torquemada who brutally executes them.....?

...no, ok then.
.......just a thought!

Perhaps Ace and his prison could burn up as he enters Earth's atmosphere, so it turns out Ace is actually the Genesis?

Actually, you guys are probably right about leaving Ace in the past. Bad Company has become a painful shadow of its former glory. Can't wait for Kano to get his. Must add that the series might not seem so awful if Jock or Kev Walker had illustrated it. But then again the crappy art was always part of its appeal.
Title: Ewins

Crappy art?

Brett Ewins has always been one of my favourite artists, even when I was a kid. And he doesn't HAVE to draw like that. He's quite capable of doing quite intricate stuff - read Johnny Nemo, Freakwave, or some of Ewins' earliest stuff for 2000AD. He chose to do Bad Company in a simple, dynamic style because it suits the story.

FWIW, the first appearance of the War Zombies from the original series of Bad Company is one of my favourite panels ever. It just sums up for me a lot of the trashy, punky appeal of really great 2000AD.

Don't get me wrong Wood, I loved the original series of Bad Company & the sequel it spawned. It was a refreshingly simple war story that owed a lot to the Commando strips it parodied. The art was also a welcome change to the highly detailed work of Ron Smith who seemed to dominate the comic at the time. But I don't it has aged well at all. I rate a lot of Ewins work. His style of visuals on Riders on the Storm and Atlantis were fantastic. I just don't feel that the new series of Bad Company is artistically any good. Sorry.

Brett did draw the first Anderson solo story. Cliff Robinson finished it off though.
The story with the 4 dark dudes in it. His art was quite good. And so was some of his Rogue Trooper art.

I like his art with Jim McCarthey on the new Bad Company. It reminds me of the old 2k. Nice! Maybe that was the intention?

I stand alone on my opinion of Bad Company. I did like the way Ewins drew Anderson though. She always had a gritty, hard edge to her. I loved strip where Anderson had to cross into some weird dimension and that kid/demon thing had loads of mouths. What was that called? When it comes to it, what was it about? I also loved Ewins art on the Haunting of Sector House Nine (I think I got it right this time!). maybe the meg should consider reprinting some of these strips. Loads of new Dredd fans will never have seen them, especially the early Anderson solo series. Would be ironic as well seen as these were first destined for the failed Dredd megazine of '86 (I think that's right). Think I'll revisit the '84, '85, '86 progs this weekend!

This bad compnay art isn't any different from the rest, I've checked, I own all the books.  It is on a smaller page though and the reprographic process now is probably more likely to show up pencil marks etc, which were always on old 2000AD art, just you couldn't see them.  I thought one of the issues so far looked a bit rushed, but this weeks was great.

The story is no better and no worse than the others (the first story of course stands on its own better than the rest).  It's a bit of retro fun, purposefully done in that style to match the other books.  Even if you don't like it, it is making a lot of old fans happy.

Brett Ewins is a good artist and has a great style.  If people don't like it that's just personal taste.  It's a very distinctive style so it may polarise more people but at least it isn't dull.

I have to put up with Nikolai Dante and Sinister Dexter (which after reading countless stuff I still don't see the point of) when I buy 2000AD for Bad Company so I don't see why the reverse shouldn't hold :)  I can understand someone not liking the strip, fair enough, I'm just not sure why they are getting so worked up about it.
