Rob Grant, co-creator of Red Dwarf, states he's working on a prequel to the Space-themed comedy.

Yes, I was going to point out that all we know is that it's a prequel and it's a story - nothing about format, whether it would be serially published/broadcast or a one-off...

Comedy prequels are an odd one. I would have thought a comedy-drama prequel to Only Fools and Horses starring Nicholas Lyndhurst as a hard man criminal and Jay from the Inbetweeners as Del Boy would be an awful idea. But I ended up enjoying it.

I'd be quite surprised if this ever happens, and would definitely prefer more episodes with the existing cast. I thought the Dave shows (which Grant had nothing to do with) were pretty good.
