Title: scojo starts the stop the Storming Heaven backlash campaign!
Post by: Thread Zero on 22 January, 2002, 04:02:56 PM
I feel you lot can't be pleased!:O)

You complain about old fashioned simple stories like Killer and now you complain about S H.

WHAT CAN REBELLION DO TO PLEASE YOU?:O)

Ahem.

I like it thus far.

Serious question.
If you were Tharg, what story would you commission?

It just seems that 2k can never please everyone, so I was wondering maybe, just maybe there is one type of story that will have mass appeal.

If you know, email me in private and I'll write it under a false name and send it in to 2k.

Thank you for your time.

regarding your subject title, scojo, i regret to say that i think that floyd's already beaten you two it.

so what would i like to see in 2000ad's pages? how about some radical new hard sf ala stephen baxter, paul macauley, ken macleod's post modern reinvention of the space opera genre? you know, something that depends on reals cutting edge concepts with realistic characterisation (possibly exploring the posthuman condition) instead of ganking tired media sci-fi concepts. something that could only be told as science fiction. something engaging, breathtaking, beautifully drawn & fun!

i've wet my knickers!

Well I think the reason people complained about Storming Heaven was that other people just kept saying how good it was all the time, when they people don't see what the fuss is all about.  Both views seem equally valid and the overall score for storming heaven is about 7, so what's the problem?

I don't think you can have stories that'll please everyone anymore.  I've been away for ages and either want old stuff I always liked or new stories that inspire me.  Once all 2000AD fans went along at the same pace, now you have returning fans and hopefully some new ones, they all probably want different things.  I think the mix in 2000AD reflects that.

At the moment there are three out of five stories I enjoy.  Dredd, Bad Company and Shakara.  The other two are okay, I read them but, that's it.  I'm sure just as many people think the reverse.

There isn't a certain type of story but I'd want:

Something that takes more than a minute to read.
Makes you want to re-read it again once you've finished.
A story where you genuinely have no idea what will happen next.
Make you pine for the next issue.
Have characters you like/loathe for all the right reasons.
Be intelligent but not obscure or confusing.
Be funny but not stupid and crude.

Any story could do that if it was well written.

For the record I think rebellion are doing a good job, 2000AD did very little for ten years (IMO).  I'm buying it and all the licensing looks really good so far.

We've got (proper) Strontium Dog and Death to look forward to.  The new strips shakara and Storming heaven all have their fans and even the ones I don't like, don't bother me.  There have been no tao de Moto's as far as I've seen.

Please excuse the long e-mail, I have nothing better to do (well I do but I don't want to do it).

Anyway good luck with your quest Scojo.

Title: a war story

yes a wwII story, or vietnam ( I think now looking back...), I mentioned this below, and think it would be good to see something like this again, purely as a one off, no sci-fi no time travel, no superheroes, just regular joes, being blown apart.

But a vietnam story isn't very 2k is it?
I mean there is no sci-fi to it.

I guess you mean with a sci-fi element to it.

Sounds interesting.

Oh you mean no sci-fi!

Mmm, apart from Button man, there hasn't been a non sci-fi or fantasy story. Ever?
Can't think of one.

Could alienate readers who want their sci-fi.

I think the VCs may be coming back.  Don't quote me on that, though.

Rogue Trooper - original Rogue on Nu-Earth and fighting the Norts - is definitely coming back this summer.

You serious?

How you know Milo?

Give us the proof!

Old Rogue Trooper, proper rogue trooper, no reinvented rogue?  Could be good.  The series has ended three times already but I'll give it a go.  I want more GI's in it this time around.  Major Magnun and Venus Bluegenes were great.

It's a shame a great story was duffed up with those Hits and although I liked Gibbons one-off it was a bloody tragedy what happened next.

As for VC's.  Grudd knows Cam Kennedy is a bloody marvellous artist but the story wasn't a classic.  Not the VC's!?  Aaaargh!  Etc.  Etc. (not overdoing it am I?)

Anyway there are other series to bring back.  How about sacrificing a goat and trying to get Moore back on Halo Jones?

Milo, how do you find out this stuff???? Is it going to be connected to the Tor Cyan series or an entirely new series? Maybe flashback like the new Johnny Alpha stuff?

Some people read the comic, some people write and draw the comic, and even fewer sit in pubs and ply the writers and artists with alcohol and find out the inside stories. My guess is that Milo has plied people with alcohol and now knows some gossip that he can tease people on the message board with.

It's a flasback/retro thing - 'Legends of Rogue Trooper' kind of deal.  All the things Rogue was doing that you didn't see first time around.  The stuff that happened in between the stories that have already been told.

Actually, on retrospect, I think I'm wrong about VCs.  There was some talk about a certain writer wanting to bring them back, but that all seems to have gone away now.

Andy Diggle was asking for help in tracking down VCs background ref - which seemed to suggest that soneone somewhere was maybe developing a new series - but I think now that it was just all for the VCs poster page in prog 2002.

Yes, but how do you know????
Ok the Hit series was utter Shite, but Cinnabar - the flashback story was excellent with great art from Kev Walker. If this is going to be a flaskback series (as Cinnabar) was this is the only Rogue Trooper story I have looked forward to since the War Machine ended. Please say its not a wind up.

As for the War Story people want - Bad Company/Glimmer Rats minus the Sci-Fi then?
Set on earth
Present Day or recent past
bit like MASH??????????! God NO

Something with realistic characters and fresh ideas.

Something that shows that comics don't have to be like the fanboy 'girls and guns' thing.

Something with the same impact and feel as Halo Jones, for example.

If you want to read a great war story - full of emotion that doesn't focus on blood and guts but has a genuine story then try reading Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks. This would be very difficult to adapt to TV movies or comics because of the huge number of threads in the story but for the largest section on World War One there is a story that could be borrowed from for a great 2k story line.

It's also the only book I'v read which really made me appreciate the author's clever use of the English Language - sounds dull but there are so many throw away sentences buried in paragraphs. Sentences of only 10-20 words long but say 10,000 things to the reader.
Brilliant
Surprised it hasn't got into the online survey

My special Space Monkey Powers tell me that we will indeed be seeing more of the VC's.

The art's going to be great. However...

Funnily enough I just mentioned Birdsong on another board tonigh! I couldn't read it, I found it too long winded! it's one of the few books I have started and refusede to finish.

Give it time. It did take a while to get going and I did wonder what was going on for most of the first section of the book. Read it in about three days while on holiday last year. When I eventually finished - at a very ungodly hour of the night/morning. I had to go for a walk and sit by the bar for about two hours just to calm myself down from the intensity of the ending to the story. I was very emotional and had lokked at the reviews in the book after about page 150 and wondered what all the fuss had been about. When I finished I realised that the strong reviews for the book didn't do it justice. It is a fantastic read. Strongly recommend you try it again
