From someone who cannot read Nikolai Dante without wincing, I was pleasantly surprised with Skakara, it looked great and seemed as though it was going to be pretty good, something of the feel of an early 2000AD series.
However I really wish I'd waited till it was over before I'd voted. If I'd know there were going to be intelligent pubic lice and talk of cock stirrups in future stories my vote would have been far different, probably about 5 points lower.
Grudd wept, is this really what people enjoy?
If Tharg really is watching as he said in his editorial this week. I'm almost tempted to ask for a Rigellian hot shot, so that the cleansing fires might burn out the impurities that are now lodged in my mind.
Puritan PVS
p.s. on a more upbeat note, my Spaced DVD arrived today. I only caught the last episode from the series on TV and loved it. I've just watched the first and it was brilliant. I'm looking forward to the Johnny Alpha reference.
No wonder you can't afford a fleece PVS if you're busy buying DVDs!!!
MATT (who really wishes he had a DVD player instead of having to spend all his hard earned cash on a new hoover because the old one sodding blew up last weekend and now I can't even afford a cool Slaine figure. Damn!)
You can change your vote, you know.
Spaced is ace, though. Isn't the Johnny Alpha reference at the end of series 2?
Yes, I now keep a record of all my finanes, a bit like MP's so it can be looked over later.
The Spaced DVD was a christmas present, but it didn't arrive till today and I'm still waiting for the Complete Clangers too. Sorry yours blew up.
I may have to watch another spaced episode now. Can't... hold... off... much... longer...
Or I could get my but into gear and do some work.
There's nothing to stop you revoting. Your new vote will replace the previous one.

There's two series?!?
Oh, I see... great. Can you get the second series on DVD, I have a birthday this year.
Well, I must have seen the end of the second, I think. I saw the episode where they do the Empire Strikes Back ending. I may have seen two episodes. I realy like the Pegg and Jessica Stevenson is pretty darn yum.
Thanks for the info.
Well, I think I will wait until the end of the series before I recast my vote. It may just be an momentary abherration and with time I may be able to hide the painful images in my brain.
The ability to recast your vote is a very good idea.
PVS,
I haven't got this week's prog yet, but if Shakara has the usual R Morrison sexual references, I'm not surprised.
No disrepect to Robbie personally, but I find his constant not to mention childish preoccupation with sex, tiresome in the extreme.
Please grow up!:O)
scojo who wants less tits and willys in 2k!
See another damn typo too!
Wake, put a spell check on this board for my sanity!
scojo annoyed with himself
This link might be able to tell you..
Wils
Link: Spaced? Series 2? On DVD? Surely not!
I can't see a spell checker happening, especially since even if I could implement one it would probably annoy people trying to use 2000AD jargon words (and yes I know these could probably be added to the dictionary).
Wake
Scojo, you have to realise Robbie Morrison has more than one string to his bow. Okay, so Dante is pretty much Benny Hill/ Carry on up the Kremlin, but don't forget his Dredd strips, which are achingly sensitive explorations of Mega City life seen through the haunted eyes of suffering children.

I didn't notice the sexual overtones of Shakara to be honest. Must read it again. I'd noticed the sexy sidekicks of the Lizard King in SH though. Nice!
Aha! Cheers Wils, that's the people who I got my first series DVD from today. Not only that, but it comes out nine days before my birfday, so I can get ayway with nor paying for it hopefully.
Cheers again
Paul
>Oh, I see... great. Can you get the second >series on DVD, I have a birthday this year.
Wow, what a coincidence! So do I!
Is there anyone else here who has a birthday this year? If so, post and let us know!
Two of us?! Wow, perhaps everyone should buy us a drink if we go to the 2000AD party.
you like scrawny, rake-like wenches then? i reckon Trip's chix are far better. it's them bikini outfits y'see...
PS shakara is great. the lice story is hilarious. MORE

Trips reminds me of Crystal Tips & Alistair. It's the hair thing that's going on.
...but the evil scrawny exploding wenches look like far more fun...
I'd be happier if it was less a reworking of early Nemesis, but I have to admit, I'm rather enjoying it.
And Kevin O'Neil's - sorry, Henry Flint's artwork (What's up, Kev? Contractual obligations stopping you using your real name?) has never been better.
No. The real problem is the Future Shock - complete rip of Destiny of the Daleks or what?!?
..as I did with the last Anderson story, which lost points each week until the end.
As for the outrage over the pubic lice and cock stirrup, I kind of agree. It's fairly gratuitous. In the old days, Pat Mills would have talked about a 'Grobble Stirrup', and we would have still got the joke. Nikolai Dante has also upped the perve factor with his latest outing, much to the detriment of the strip. I used to show 2000AD to friends, work colleagues etc. Now it's a much more guilty pleasure, hidden in a brown paper bag in case the girlfriend gets a look at it!
Aha - I thought I was the only one who noticed the similarity between the Future Shock and the Who story "Destiny Of The Daleks".
To be honest, it's the kind of theme that's probably been around in science fiction for decades; Asimov probably did it first, he did have the annoying habit of inventing just about every sci-fi idea ever!
Incidentally, I thought Shakara also had a hint of Who this week. There was a very similar microbes-living-on-a-dying-alien-body strip published in Doctor Who Magazine about 12 years ago, written by Robbie Morrison's dad, Grant!

Actually, it's a Blake's 7 episode - 'Trial', if my geek brain remembers correctly.
Blake beams down to a planet for a bit of navel contemplation and meets one of the parasites living off the living planet.
Come to think of it, isn't there an ancient Dredd story (Judge Child, ISTR) where there's a living planet that eats spacecraft?
Hmm, I guess thematically there are similarities between the Shakara story and "Trial" - sentient lifeforms living off a larger lifeform - but if you have a look at the Grant Morrison story, it's a lot closer in content and style.
Yeah, the living planet was indeed in The Judge Child Quest. Great stuff too!

He he, well, my girlfriend's pretty thin!! So yeah, although not as far as the anorexic super'model' look.
Aye, I read Shakara again and thought, hold on, do these people not get the joke? ie. Do you all know what a Fremen is and why his jockstrap (by another name) is so dry?
Then there's the fact that it's a big hairy undesirable alien that's saying it, being pretty much in character I'd have thought. Do some of us feel we need protected against the odd joke. It's a bit of a stretch of the imagination to call it a sexual reference, or are we afraid of the word 'cock'. Would it help not to offend the sensetive if it was spelt Cokk?
I sense some people missed the point.
I'm not afraid of your or anyone elses cock, I just thought it was unnecesary and deeply unfunny. And if it wasn't supposed to be funny then what really was the point? If you don't see a COCK in your comic as a sexual reference then I'm not sure what would.
As a comparison, I rather enjoyed the scene in The Two Torquemada's where Purity Brown in psychic disguise as a young man was being fitted for her cod piece by a perv "May I suggest the galleon?", it was pretty funny and 'just' on the right side of taste, something Pat mills often manages (see Marshal Law, Kingdom of the blind)
The other reference was of course to pubic lice and crabs. Which again just seemed crass. However of the majority of 2000AD fans like this stuff then so be it.
I could see it was meant to be funny, I didn't miss the point, you'd have to be blind not to miss it, and was the problem.
