Title: What is Active X control?
Post by: paulvonscott on 20 June, 2003, 05:02:27 AM
And am I safe to download it?  My software gives me the choice. I've had very very odd internet problems today and I don't want to add to them.

Cheers

Paul

p.s. can only just about see the top post, otherwise there is no header.

Paul,
Active X is basicalluy the Microsoft version of a Java applet. It's a small program that downloads onto your PC and integrates in Explorer.

That said you should treat an Active X control with the same 'suspicion' as any executable. However, reputable ones will pop-up a screen and ask you to confirm the download, they also show you (if you want to see it) the security certificate. If an Active X control doesn't have a valid certificate then DONT download it. At all.

If you are unsure then email me or post here the link you are following, I (or someone else) can take a look

If in doubt RUN AWAY!!
