Hello, my name is Mark. I'm a big fan of Sylvester Stallone movies. I love the Judge Dredd movie which a friend lent me on DVD recently. I hadn't seen it before and thought it was brill, one of the best sci-fi films I had seen. I wanted to know if a sequel was going to be made and did a search for Judge Dredd on google. I was well surprised to find out that there was a comic of the movie and wanted to know if it follows on from where the film left off. I haven't seen any of the stories and wondered if Rico had ever come back. Please let me know!!!! By the way, what is 2000ad and why does it have the Judge Dredd comic in it? Where can I buy it? Is it as good in comic as the movie?
Hi.
If you live in the UK then you should be able to pick up 2000AD from any newsagent (such as WH Smith).
2000AD is the name of a weekly comic, which is an anthology usually containing 5 strips per week, one of which is always Judge Dredd.
2000AD (and Dredd) have been going since 1977, the film released in 1995 was based on the character & some of the previous storylines, but it does not fit into the continuity of the comic strip. (Most fans of the comic dislike the film, but that's a seperate issue!)
Pick up this week's issue #1350 (we call 'em Progs, short for 'programme' - so it's "Prog 1350") - it's an excellent 'jumping on point' as each of the stories are episode 1s.
2000AD is a weekly sci-fi comic in publication since 1977. It may surprise you to know that Judge Dredd first appeared in issue 2, and has been in almost every issue since.
And it is general opinion, of the boarders here at least, that the Judge Dredd comic is WAY better than the movie it spawned.
What is 2000AD?
That "What is 2000AD?" page needs updating in line with the recent price rise to ?1.60!
Call me cynical, but...
...yeah, I thought that too Dr X
Now then. Behave, boys. Presumption of innocence.
Welcome, new person. We're glad to see you. You'll learn a great deal about 2000AD and Judge Dredd if you read some of the material on this site.
- Trout
Sorry Trouty, I have my doubts too.
Isnt there a montage of progs at the start of the Dredd movie? Hmmm...
I apologise. I shouldnt be going about like some kind of anti-non-comic-reading-movie-fan nazi.
Ill leave my mind a little open...
Sorry that should have read: Ill leave my little mind open...
He he, I was convinced by the first line alone!
This could become a sport :o)
Oh come on, Mr Stallonefan! You use the terms "brill" and "well surprised", so you're British and under thirty. I'm sorry, but there is just no way you've never come across 2000ad and you've watched the Dredd movie without noticing the comic montage at the beginning!
Nice spoof, but not cutting the mustard...
Dudley
Call me sad, call me suspicious - but I am cynical and just did a search on Google for "judge dredd" (not in quotes) - and 2000ad isn't even listed in the first page of results.
but on the first page you do get:
Judge Dredd - Banned in Britain?
Judge Dredd - Banned In Britain? Say it ain't so, Joe! Well sad but true it is. The year was 1978 and 2000AD was into its second year of publication. ...
i think you are all very cruel.
we finally get computer access to the mentally disturbed wards of every prison in the uk and the first time a disturbed inmate makes a post you all accuse him of being he who shall not be named.
stallonefan, welcome to the board. now dont forget to take you meds.
actaully we are a friendly bunch. stallone stuff from the movie will fetch a tidy bundle from many of us on ebay. so we are fans of a form as well.
I do not understand what you all meen. I really do look like the Stallone film Judge Dredd and wanted to know more. Why do people talk to me in this way? I'm a really big fan of Stallone and love all his movies, especially "Over the Top" and "Cobra". Judge Dredd is good as well. Why don't people like the film?
Simply put Stallonefan, we have a repeating troll called Scojo, who comes on with fake ID, asking various questions in his new cover, before eventually going completely mental and getting banned again.
Hence there is a general air of suspicion, especially as he was just banned this morning. Escpecially as he often talks about the movies and eventually the scripts he wrote.
Well, people don't like the movie (on the whole) because it differs from the comic in a few important respects, that's comic fans for you. Though Dredd, The Angel Gang and the big robot all appear in the comic 2000AD.
If you want to read Judge Dredd, there are some great compilations available.
Sadly, you have to be on the boards without behaving weird for some time before people assume you aren't Scojo.
I say all this as much to anyone out there, who wants to join in as I do you.
Because it's crap.
It isn't a very good reflection of the comic version on which it's supposed to be based.
I must admit, I'm finding it a bit hard to believe you've never heard of 2000ad either- but hey, if you say you haven't then I guess I'll take your word for it.
We have an irritating little pest known as Scojo (or Mongo, if I'm doing the talking) who visits from time to time. He tends to think it's really clever to pretend to be different people and his last visit was yesterday. Your entrance is typical of one of his- so try not to take offence if we're a bit wary of you. We're all pretty much alright, as it goes.
I am curious as to how old you are though. Not heard of 2000ad?!? What country are you living in?
Ok, cynical mode off:
If you want to see a sample of 2000AD & Dredd stories take a look at the thrillviewer for a small selection of stories that have appeared in 2000Ad and are free to view here.
ThrillviewerOr jump straight to the Judge Dredd section:
Judge DreddIf you like Stallone as Dredd then there?s always Doppelganger a fan created story for the
Class Of ?79 website, it can be viewed on there website or here on the official 2000AD site>
Class of ?79 - Doppelganger
2000AD - DoppelgangerCynical mode: Reset?..
La Placa Rifa,
W. R. Logan.
I've never seen that one before. Can you do it again but with Robocop?
But no multiple posting or answering his own questions...
But...
Gimmie an 'S'
"especially "Over the Top" and "Cobra". "
so not Rocky, First Blood and Copland then?
Hmmm...
Anyway, I liked the film overall, watched it a few times:
Good points:
Angel Gang
ABC robot
Cityscape
Rico
Hershey (just)
Bad points:
Stallone, his dialogue (not necessarily his fault) and removing of the helmet.
The bikes (ugh)
The Angel gang being wiped out so quickly and easily.
The amount of chief judges killed!
The uniforms, except the SJS ones.
That stupid 'double whammy' thing. Eh?
hey guys , did i miss mongoesque behavior yesterday? what was yesterdays name?
The film was rubbish cos Our Dredd doesnt go around kissing people.
I read on your site that 2 new Judge Dredd movies are been made. Will they also star Stallone as his website doesn't say anything about them. I tried searching for news on the film and found 2 screenplays. They are pdf, what are pdf? My pc won't open them. Have these screenplays leaked from the film company? Does anyone know what happens in them. I'd like any news. Thank yoou.
Yes, you know that bit I wrote above how Scojo usually ends up talking about his scripts, well, you are.
Doh!
Boring!
Thanks!
Not you PVS, stalloneboy!
Yawn....
If you cant read PDF then consider yerself lucky, but you probably wont get past about page 20. The scripts are dull, dull, dull and could only be considered Fan-fic of the lowest order. Best not mention the dialogue either. Clang!!
Go to shorelines web site and read whats on there about the films. Are you gonna mention the game now?
Yer "that joke isnt funny anmore, sc*j*" Slippo
The scripts on site show that Dredd is gay, interestingly enough. If this is unintentional it shows the writer must have not yet embraced his true sexuality
Can't one of the site administrators check out his IP address?
Isn't Wake on holiday?
To be fair we still don't know it is Scojo. When he starts hurling abuse then we'll know for sure. But whoever it is I don't buy their act. Time to start that killfile.
Wht not give him, or her, the benefit of the doubt?
A twenty something British Stallone fan, who has recently discovered the Dredd movie, and has never heard of 2000AD.
Why do you all find this so hard to swallow..?
Not yet, but I'm about to go out for the evening, and there are too many people on the site at the moment to run the IP check. I'll try again later.
Wake
the two Dredd film scripts ARE leaks from the production company. The two movies are set to star Robert Patrick of X Files fame. A controversial scene involves Dredd chasing a balding, cat torturing criminal into a baby oil factory where during hand to hand combat all their clothes get ripped and their forced to wrestle naked in a giant vat of baby oil. Throughout Dredds helmet(s) remain in place.
The theme tune is a reworked version of the CHiPs theme by David Arnold and there is a SUBTEXT of Dredd coming to terms with his true feelings for other me...er, the law.
Jim
Apparently the second film was going toi feature Judge Death deflecting dredds bullets usind a dustbin lid, but the scene was dropped as it was considered "too silly".
sadly the baby oil scene has had to be dropped as very similar scenes involving the Doctor and the Master exist in over 456 Who fan scripts.
All right, here's a question: where do people stand on the question of Judge Dredd as an action movie on its own merits? Okay, the universal opinion on this board seems to be that it was a travesty compared to the comic (and I'd agree), I've read a lot of reviews that reckon it's pretty good by action movie standards.
One point about the opening of the movie- a lot of the progs aren't 2000AD, they're the Judge Dredd reprint title.
Witch-hunts aside, I'm at the point where if I never heard speculation over, opinions on, or ideas for Dredd movies and Dredd computer games ever again I'd be quite happy.
I find it hard to believe that you found this site, registered, posted a message without seeing the first page www.2000adonline.com that makes it pretty obvious its a comic.
The comic is great, titan books publish complete stories ( strips from the comics together, instead of week by week ) with larger panels and they are an awesome read.
The film is great except for one thing, the plot is far far far too complex.
I actually like the film, it would have been very easy to have dropped the judge uniform as it looks silly in film format but respect to stallone on insisting it should stay as it did.
It is possible to see the film and not realise its a comic but to find this board and not know sounds odd. I advise you look in the graphic novels / comics section of large bookshops to try find mr dredd.
on the front page of this website it says
"I am Tharg, editor of the Galaxy's Greatest Comic that has featured Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper, Strontium Dog and hundreds of other characters over the past 25 years. Click on the links below for an insight into the latest goings-on in my zarjaz world."
comic that featured judge dredd....mm... hint
"They are pdf, what are pdf?"
You need to download Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader to open a PDF file.
This link should do it (I think)

stallonefan - a double negative surely?...
just like to point out that - I AM NOT SCOJO.

To stick my little oar in (nudge nudge)..
i was convinced almost immediately.
