Title: Message Board
Post by: ukdane on 19 August, 2003, 03:42:34 PM
I was going to poll this, but have decided instead to open it up for discussion.

In my mind, this message board is one of the best around (most will agree with me here, yes?)

I've been thinking of ways to make it even better.

As always, a compromise would probably have to be made. In this case, I imagine it would slightly slow down the time it takes for the message board to load. But would the reusult be worth it?

So Idea 1:
Post Tracking. Every message thread where you post, an icon indicates that you have posted to it. This means the next time you return to the message board, you can easily see where you posted messages (If you can't remember like me)

Idea 2:
Watch. Ok, so you've read an interesting thread, and noted posted a reply to it, but want to keep an eye on it for future posts. Pressing a watch button on the actual thread, will add a Watch icon to the meassage board index.

So, what do you think of these ideas, and do you have any of your own?

(Wake, if these turn out to be good ideas, is there any chance they can be implemented?)

"

Yep, I do that too.

Couldn't you just go to "Edit" on your browser, go to "find" and type in your username?  That way, not only can you find all your own messages, you find everyone who's replied to you.

This won't work well if your username is "and", of course.

You could of course click "view messages by ukdane" to see which threads you've posted on...

The board can be slow enough already if you've not got a fast connection / computer, so although it's a nice idea, I don't reckon it would be worth it.

How about a Preview function, so you can proofread your post before you post it. Handy for those of us who try to be smartarses with the HTML.

Anyone who's read my disjointed efforts on the Icon Musings thread will understand why I want this feature...

I know both the spell checker and the previoew have been talked about before. And it was decided that they would definately slow the process down (Shame, as some of us need them for all the spllng mstkes we made)

If you're that concered about spell checking you write your posts in Word, spellcheck, then cut&paste into the message box.

good idea odd boy but.
i dont mean to be difficult but i wanted something on the lines of an office assistant in windows with perhaps a list of characters.
perhaps the following.
halo jones.]
who blows me a kiss after each correction.
dredd who does a little dance after i finish my spelling corections.
perhaps anderson who could actaully offer to punish me for them.somthing to do with handcuffs and things.

you really dont get that on the windows spell check.
i also want it to correctly offer 2000ad words. such a squaxx dek thargo and such things.

so no the cut and paste method is not going to work for me.

The change I'm most keen to do is an optional - 'I like boards which have an extra layer between me and the threads' version.

For watched threads I could do a watch via email option, so new messages are emailed (and an ignore version for people who already get everything emailed)

In order to check whether you have posted to a given thread, there would have to be an extra search for each thread presented in the index to check for your username, which I think would take a significant length of time.
An alternative would be to display the last e.g. 5 messages posted by you (or have a link to allow you to quickly see your most recent posts)

Ensure you spell it correctly once, add it to your spellcheckers dictionary and never worry about it again.
