Title: 2000AD showcase to be released in u.s!
Post by: oscam on 23 August, 2003, 03:41:23 PM
Newsarama say that 2000AD showcase#1 will be released on October 30th at ?1.49 or $1.99 [in us].
Prog #1 to #4 will reprint 13 and will have the normal u.s. comic format.
Sounds good to me,what do you all think?

Sounds great.

But theyve chosen WarDog, which aint the greatest story.  In fact saying its average, is being pretty liberal

I agree, WarDog sucks. Those yanks wont have the best impression after that will they. SinDex would have been a great choice.
I thought they would do thousands of Dredds though personally.

I think it's a good idea to try these sort of strips rather than classic 2000AD characters in this format.

Hopefully the yanks will like Wardog more than us Brits did, but these editions are a great idea.
It'll be nice to have 13 in a stand alone, collected version.

SinDex would be perfect for this format, but what about Dante?
That could get us a handy collected version of the story so far, and it deserves to be read by as many people as possible!

And all the Judge Death stories in chronological order.

Ooooh the possibilities!

this has been tried before with limited success. though i wish them all the best.

i would not buy. but i hope it takes off. more power and money to rebellion.

could finally see some merchandise licences being issued , which is a good thing.

Hopefully this will work better, as the stories chosen so far are self contained, single stories with starts and finishes that have already been well recieved, as opposed to collections of unrelated Dredd stories, for example.
If its marketed right, this could be a very smart move in terms of getting Americans accustomed to 2000ad characters, giving a better chance of of demand for 2000ad related films.

Or it could fall flat on its face!

PVS, you are probably correct.  They want stories that stand alone.  Not a whole arc (brings to mind Dante, it would be difficult to read Dante without the backstory or at least something would be missing), Im not sure the US would get the humour in SinDex (I dont :)).

Still Im not sure Wardog is a good choice...

>SinDex would have been a great choice.

WarDog may not be 2000's greatest moment but is better than the crap that is Sin/Dex.

Did anyone else notice that the editor for this series is none other than.

Our very own J-BO-1!!

I hope this means we get to see all stories we vote for reprinted!

My views on Sin/Dex are pretty well known, so not to keep repeating myself I rarely discuss them, but if someone suggests that they would be the best characters to use in promoting 2000AD in America well that madness needs a response.

Wardog! Man! This is supposed to be 2000ad SHOWCASE not 2000ads american funeral!

Doh!

He he, fair enough. 13's certainly a better option. Wardog might be too, if there's anything ever going to happen about the game. NB, once DvD is out that is!

Look, I know that some of the stories selected to go in Showcase may not be to the tastes of the message board, but we need to keep pushing 2000 AD on as many levels as possible, and there's a lot we want to get out there.

The Scrap is possibly the best thing you could put into it in my opinion.

This whole reprint idea is potentially great news - Wardog got a disproportionate slagging because of the game tie-in IMO (not that it was a modern day classic or anything)-whatever becme of the game BTW?

My only fear is that it doesnt become a *erm* showcase for the next wave of Brit talent to desert the progs and leave us high and dry again! :)

Will cabbalistics remain in B & W?

Hmm I get the feeling that Wardog is to be put out early in the ShowCase run might be something to do with Rebellion being a Gaming company...

I didn't think the story was as bad as most would say, but I think that there are definitely stronger stories that should come out earlier.

Not that it really bothers me, because as I've got almost all of the progs/megs I try not to buy reprints anyway... as much as I'd like to.
However - I might just have to get the CabInc ones though!

CABALLISTICS will have colour covers (most likely painted by Dom Reardon), but the interiors will remain in B/W ? AS THARG INTENDED. Ditto for any other b/w strips, incidentally.

Hurrah! And no half assed Quality style stretching either, I trust?

Thanks to 2000 AD's US-resize friendly format (it's in proportion to the US size of 258 x 170mm), the resized pages should look fine.

For older thrills, we might have to do something a bit bleurgh like centre the pages and just have larger borders, but I won't stretch or distort any art, period. I consider doing so to be extremely rude, frankly.

Re: current poll

Could people PLEASE check the spelling & caps of thier votes...
i.e. currently there is one vote for "Sinister Dexter" and one vote for "sinister dexter"... you can ammend your answers to fit y'know.

Also - to whoever voted for Harry 20: You do know it's being reprinted in the JD Megazine right now don't you?

I will join this thread late to say that I think this is one of the most positive moves we've heard of in years.  If these US reprints were successful and if the creators collect competitive royalties then this could be a means by which 2000AD keep more of their best writers/artists for longer.

But my mind keeps imagining the muddy coloured 2000AD Showcase put out by Quality.  J-Bo's promises reassure, but they cannot erase the memories...
