Okay, just finished the above-named Philip K Dick book and must say I enjoyed it immensely.

However ...

I am at a loss as to the ending of the book. It's all excellently written and I was thoroughly enjoying it but then it just ... stopped. I fear I've missed something vital and not 'got' the ending, but even for a PKD novel it seems to have a remarkably obtuse ending. I see a lot of themes spread throughout the book, but none of them seem to be central enough to be THE theme. This doesn't normally happen when I read a book and I've 'got' even the most confusing conclusions in some pretty complex books, but this left me flumuxed ...

I am, undoubtedly, missing the point ...

Can anyone shed any light on this great, though confusing, book?

Cheers

LMS

It's a while since I read it, so my memory's a bit vague, but...

Isn't the point that having lionised the writer bloke throughout the book as a great sage, they finally meet him only to discover he's just an ordinary bloke who doesn't have all the answers after all? Bit like the Wizard of Oz in a way, I suppose.

it's a bloody brilliant book, anyhow.

Yeah, it's the great Alt History novel... and the ending is oblique. But, it's one of those novels that closure occurs before the actual book's ending. And it was written semi-randomly anyway (by casting the I=Ching)

Long time since I read it... must read it again some time.

I read this on holiday last year.

I thought the point was that, despite the protaganist's efforts to find a better way of life, he couldn't - and the moral was that the world was the way it was and the only solace available is to dream of changing it.

Maybe not expressing myself very clearly there, but best I can do before coffee.

By the way, has anyone read CITY by Clifford D. Simak? The best and saddest SF book in a long time, I think.

Amazon are streaming - for free - the pilot of their adaptation of The Man in the High Castle (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RSGIVVO/ref=amb_link_428525202_9?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-5&pf_rd_r=066QNHYDF4N84C5M92EJ&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=2017989202&pf_rd_i=9940930011).

But you need to live in the US to see it or virtually pretend you live there.
