Title: Judge Dredd vs Oor Wullie
Post by: Mudcrab on 15 October, 2003, 03:44:33 AM
Dredd joins forces with PC Murdoch to try and hunt down the most wanted kid in Glasgow.

Ah, the original Xmas graphic novel :o)

For many years, their home town was never specified, but is now occasionally referred to as Auchenshoogle.

Which is fictional, before all you English lot start getting funny. :-)

However, it's obvious to Dundonians that the strips are set in Dundee.
The evidence: In the 80s, there was a New Year episode where the Broons went to "The Birkie Inn" for a big piss-up.

The Birkhill Inn is a well-kent pub on the outskirts of Dundee, which now has the cutting laminated and on its wall.

It was my grandfather's local in the days before drinking and driving were frowned upon.
However, I don't like it much nowadays. The service is crap.

Afterthought: Wullie would, of course, be no match for Dredd, but there'd be one benefit.

Wullie spends a fair bit of time tipping PC Murdoch's hat off.

If he could do it to Dredd, we'd finally see his face!

It's no funnier than Auchtermuchtie or Ecklefecken.  Which are real places.  (yes, I know I've misspelled Ecklefecken.)

And the Scots wonder why the rest of the world still sometimes think of them as quaint and slightly backwards...

Often found Kirkcudbright (say kirkubree) the funniest scots name.  But the English havent got that much to smirk about, they have a number of funny village names.  Like upper and lower Bottoms, and a little snodberry (IIRC)....

There's a Little Piddle somewhere.
Can't think of any amusing place names though

Ah, there's still plenty quaint and ridiculously stupid place names in England. Moreso than Scotland I'd say. Lower Tipping and Quaint on the Muse with David Jason and Catherine Zeta Jones skipping off gailly for brunch in Spiffing Topping.

At one point certain Doctor Who fans were trying to organise a convention in the little English town of Hanging Langford. Can't imagine why...

One of the places I used to work had one of those UK directory things, and I was overjoyed to discover a place (or a VERY strange shop!) in Scotland called "Twathats".

In The Meaning Of Liff it was described as the sensation one feels between the thighs when riding a powerful motorbike. My best mate at school lived in Chew Stoke... good scrumpy around there!

Down 'ere in darkest Dorset we've got the Upper and Lower Piddle, Piddletrenthide, Piddlehinton and Puddletown.

"Aren't they all near to the Monkey place?"

Yep, 5 miles or so. The monkey place is next door to Bovington Tank Museum, the best place in the country for a 'take the children so Dad's got an excuse to act like a big kid' day trip.
