Yay! I'm up for it!

Are you up for it?

We can use the same format as Logan does for the cover threads too.

If you want slips, I will help with the collation of the votes. Let me know what you want.

someone put up the catorgories then.
or shall we leave them as last year. perhaps drop the steaming bison name? in respect to the fact the creator is a member of this board and will be at dreddcon.
or leave it and hope he accepts the comical reference by the board.

but we should go hold this again yes!

I have started a list of categories, and wil post them here when complete.

The list is based on last years, and may not change a great deal.

Maybe a couple more self-reverential categories to encourage boarders to vote.

The best way to run this would be to use the polls. As it's only for this year, there shouldn't be too many choices. I'd suggest waiting until the end of year prog is out, then running choices from prog 2003-2004 and the respective Megs.

But there must be nominations, especially for "best new" whatever, as in past years people who've been around forever have won it.

OK hows this for a compromise.  The voting shall be done by poll after prog 2004 and nominations will start now for all of the catergories above??  Fair.  No yes.

Oh and I think Best Fansite would be a good one.
as would Best Fanzine, anything else.......

Oh and cmon f*cking Scotland!!!!

That seems like a good compromise.

If Iever get the time, I'm going to flick through this year's progs and maybe do a list of new stories and this year's Dredds, unless someone beats me to it.

Or points out, as usual, that all the info's already somewhere on this site. :-)

Maybe it should be the SinDex award....

Would you believe I didnt vote for Bison either........

That result is probably the most shocking from last year.  Though in IMHO SinDex has run out of steam and should be rested.  I think Ill be pulling the name as well and not calling it the Steaming Bison award..........

Title: Re: The Boarders Awards for 2003.....
Post by: Oddboy on 17 November, 2003, 01:26:59 AM
I think we should keep the 'Steaming Bison' award... the name of the award is more about the *reaction* to the story then just the worst story.
ie which story really made you *shudder* the most at the thought of reading it & had the most hatred thrown at it (deservedly or otherwise) - this year I might suggest Steve Moore's Past Imperfect for example.

IIRC the reason the voting wasn't conducted via the polls last year was because of the need to give proper time to each category.
Some people only visit the site on week-days, some people only at weekends etc and polls should have the same length of time to run, so it should be 1 week per category...which would then take *forever*.  I'd recommend using a thread, as last year, where everyone cut'n'pastes the categories & fills in their votes on one thread.

How about Wake setting up an awards page where we can have seperate polls in all catagories, with a link from the main page?

No problem Your Highness, I have many files, it was just a cut & paste job.

There's an error there though - Banzai Battalion was in Prog 2003 rather then in year 2003 (I was using 'Find') so that shouldn't be counted.

Unless stuff from P2003 is counted, in which case you'll need to count Rogue Trooper "Angels" (Rennie/Coleby), Sinister Dexter "Get Shirty" (Abnett/Davis - text story with spot illustrations) and The V.C.s "Escher's Well" (Abnett/Williams).

What d'yall reckon - count P2003 or not - it does include the episode 1s of 4 of the thrills that are in the year '03.

Well it depends on wether we count 2003 and not 2004 or 2004 and not 2003.....

Id also like to see a one shot award, best PI, Future Shock or terror tale???

Including Prog 2003 makes sense to me.

Maybe we could split the votes into 4 categaries? Dredd, One Offs, Returning Strips, and New Strips?

Dredd - Judge Dredd
Incubus Wagner/Diggle/Flint
The Trial Of Orlok Wagner/Kennedy
A Night At The Opera Rennie/Marshall
Hard Day's Night Morrisson/Goddard/Teague
Revenge Of The Chief Judge's Man Wagner/Burns
The Satanist Wagner/Adlard
Holding On Rennie/Gibson
Club Sov Rennie/Fraser
Meet The Flooks Rennie/Holden
See Zammy Run Rennie/Miranda
The In Club Wagner/Ormston
Inside Job Edginton/Pugh
Meatmonger Smith/Siku

One offs -
Past Imperfect
"Otherworld" Moore/Smith
"The Man They Couldn't Hang" Kek-W/Gallagher
"The Great War" Wilkinson/Gallagher

Tharg's Alien Invasions Flint
"Mr Meat Bingo's Zombie Umbrella"

Tharg's Future Shocks
"Head" Woolley/Gurr
"Bad Thoughts" McTighe/Gallagher
"Revelations" Blythe/Kennedy
"The Burning Deck" Bark/Dayglo

Tharg's Terror Tales
"The Statue Garden" Wilkinson/Reardon

New Strips -
Caballistics, Inc. Rennie/Reardon
"Going Underground"
"Moving In"
"Breaking Out"
"Downtime"

Dead Men Walking Stevens/Cook

From Grace Spurrier/Irving

Interceptor Edginton/Pugh

Leviathan Edginton/D'Israeli

Lobster Random Spurrier/Critchlow
"No Gain, No Pain"

Snow/Tiger Diggle/Clarke
"Pax Americana"

Synnamon Clayton/Dows/Campbell/Townsend
"Facing Mecha"

Returning Strips -
ABC Warriors Mills/Ezquerra
"The Shadow Warriors (Book I)"

Atavar II Abnett/Elson

Banzai Battalion Wagner/Gibson
"Save the Fitz!"

Bec & Kawl Spurrier/Roberts
"Enlightenment"
"eeevil.com"
"Pest Control"

Durham Red Abnett/Harrison
"The Empty Suns (Book I)"

Nikolai Dante Morrison/Burns
"Hell And High Water"

Rogue Trooper Rennie/Johnson/Collins
"Ghouls"

Sinister Dexter
"Relode" Abnett/Willsher
"Big Game" Abnett/Smith
"Write From Wrong" Abnett/Yeowell
"Oh Kal Cutter" Abnett/Clarke
"Junk Bond" Abnerr/Davis

Sl?ine Mills/Langley
"Moloch (The Books Of Invasion: Book I)"
"Golamh (The Books Of Invasion: Book II)"

Strontium Dog Wagner/Ezquerra (idea by James Norton)
"The Tax Dodge"

The V.C.s Abnett/Williams
"Look On The Bright Side"
"Shotgun"
"Tickover"
"Bystander"
"Green"
"MIA"
"E & E"
"Charon"

The only thing I'm dithering over is the placing of Tales of Telguuth.

One offs or Returning strip? You decide!

Well, A link could always be put up on the front page, to the POLLS section of the site. (Alternatively ask Wake to create a special voting page)
Then all the polls could run for 2 weeks, simultaneously.
Title: Re: The Boarders Awards for 2003.....
Post by: Oddboy on 17 November, 2003, 07:10:41 PM
I've placed them in the one-off's sheet of my 2K files, but they could go in repeat offenders *sorry* returning strip section if y'all want.
I somehow doubt it matters too much as I don't think it'll get too many votes...
Title: Re: The Boarders Awards for 2003.....
Post by: ukdane on 17 November, 2003, 07:12:38 PM
Well, if you follow how the stories are broken down on this site, then Telguuth is a "one-off".
Title: Re: The Boarders Awards for 2003.....
Post by: Trout on 17 November, 2003, 07:15:25 PM
Who cares?

It won't win.

I also think it should be Prog 2004, since Prog 2003 was included in last year's voting and 2004 will be a good cut-off point for this year.

Seperate set of categories, surely?

Telguuths to be included in the one offs then. Surprised how much I'm looking forwards to the next set of Telguuths. The artist they've got now has raised the series quality ten-fold. Guess it didn't need painted art after all.

Paul Cornell has had at least two series printed in the Meg before XTNCT, but it's probably fair to say that neither of them had the impact that Tripod and his mates has had.

I definatley think we should split the categories as there are a brick load of series, and it's unfair to pit a future shock against Leviathon. Or to decide between Stronty and Cabals, for instance.

More possible categories -
Best character,
Best supporting character,
Best character in 'Judge Dredd',
Best new character,
Funniest moment,
Best line,
Best cliff-hanger,
Best cover,
Best text feature,
Best collected edition,
Best audio,
Best merchandise...

More and more are springing to mind. Maybe a limit of 20 categories?

Splendid idea.

Incidentally, the list of Dredd stories reads like a gang of perps:

Hard Day's Night Morrisson
The Satanist Wagner
Club Sov Rennie
Inside Job Edginton
Meatmonger Smith

...or the Famous Five perhaps :o)

Yeah Id like to limit it to say 15 or so awards, any more and it gets too silly.

Im trying not to have character threads, as they seem to be reflected in the Strip threads...  But I do like Best new character....  So that may blwo that one out of the window :)

I could set up a poll page parallel to the current page if the format is otherwise okay without spending too much time on it. Someone could then write a news item which I could put on the front page with a link to the awards page. However, each award would have to be a open ended, or voting from up to 10 options as per the current polls.

Are we splitting the caregories between Meg and 2k? Perhaps combining Dredd into one?

I don't think the character votes totally reflect the best strip. I can see Leviathon doing well in the best strip but Inspector Lament not rating highly as a character.

I think it would be good if there was no 'view results' option for the awards poll until the results are finalised.
Especially if there are open ended questions because spelling & punctuation make a lot of confusion to the polls.

Polls! Polls! Polls!

(C'mon Wake's even said he'll set up a page for it)

I can't be bothered to wade through separate message threads. I haven't for Logan's voting, I can't be bothered with it all. A poll though, one click on one page, is much simpler (plus in this instance I get an instant average result, which I know we won't with the Boarders Award, but still)

As a note about the voting for covers on the message board. As this is only a small cross section of users who vote, it can't really be representative of the best covers, but the individual cover votes on the prog profile pages, provides a much better idea of the best covers.

As far as this year is concerned, prog 2003 is indeed valid, as it is the start point for many of the stories.

I, personally, feel that 2004 shuld not be included unless it contains more than one final episode.

To be honest Im not sure if we did or didnt.  But Bolt and I are trying to put together a Template that will work in the future with less work, hence the threads or polls discussion and what awards to have.  What I personally want is to have the document that Bolt has done some tremendous work on and use it years to come (I suppose this is my wifes project management coming out) it will hopefully take out all the legwork for the most part.

So the timeline Id like is from prog 2003 up to next weeks prog (if this is the last prog before 2004), Im still open for more Votes and any discussions on Polls or Threads is also welcome.

Why not make it "Judge Spotters Club Award for best published/online fan contribution", that way the publications and individual onsite strips, fan websites etc could all be in with a chance?  Of course, you wouldn't be comparing like with like, but it'd be between the voter and their conscience whether a 3-panel joke online strip beats an entire publication (or Bolt-01's attempt to draw the equivalent of 1 issue of 2000ad and the Megazine every week).

Interesting, at least the right number of boxes have opened now....

Re-check the code and try later, got kids to feed n dress.

AH HA! Just found what you meant Wake, some of the codes had a space after the prog number, which came before the .jpg extension.

Fingers crossed.

Then it must be the spaces getting left in the image names. Prog thumbnals are e.g 1337thumb.jpg not 1337 thumb.jpg

If you have a return in the middle of an image name, it may get translated into a space.
